Why The Butterfly?
BellSouth
We chose the butterfly for our logo because of "The Butterfly Effect."  The meaning comes from a 1972 talk given by Edward Lorenz to the American Association for the Advancement of Science describing the chaos theory titled, "Does The Flap
Of A Butterfly's Wings In Brazil Set Off A Tornado In Texas."
In other words, the ripples of a very small change can make a huge difference down the road.

Greetings!

We know it's late, but the current Butterfly Effect is here.  This has been a busy time with Federal and State funding changes, fund raising events and the continued growth of our extended family looking for a more community involved and independent life.

This issue begins with a success story of one of our own.  It's a great example of how Henderson Haven's exclusive one-on-one supports and out-of-the-box thinking has been able to help provide a life of true choice and self design.  We'll also take a look at how our organization depends on our fundraising events and your generous support.  Without it, we wouldn't be able to assist those we serve achieve their life goals.

All of us at Henderson Haven hope you're having a fantastic summer and look forward to sharing our success stories in the months to come!

Sheila and her new friend Penny
Sheila and Penny
When Sheila's parents found Henderson Haven, Sheila was living in a group home with two other adults and staff.  They believed this was the only option for Sheila but wondered what would become of her when the time came they were no longer able to provide her with their own support.  Henderson Haven showed them there was another, better option.

With the help of Henderson Haven, Sheila was able to move into an apartment of her own, something her parents never thought would be possible.  With our one-on-one staff support, she has been able to accomplish life goals that were originally considered too far to reach, not only in her own life, but in her community involvement as well.

Sheila had a fear of being left alone, she would panic at the slightest change in her daily routine, and she didn't handle stressful situations well at all.  With the support of the Henderson Haven staff, she now can spend several hours a day alone in her apartment and has a goal of finding a roommate and being able to spend even more time without the need for staff presence.  She utilizes public transportation and is able to schedule her own rides to and from her job at Pizza Hut and volunteer jobs and more importantly, handle any needed changes should there ever be issues.

Shiela recently experienced personal loss when her long time companion, Tom, a cat she has had since moving out on her own, was taken to kitty heaven.  This was an event her parents had been dreading because of the way Shiela had handled these types of situations in the past.  Shiela handled the situation with great acceptance that she would be fine with support of her team through the situation's sadness.  She has even found a new friend in Penny, her new cat.

All of us at Henderson Haven salute Shiela in her life choices and know she will continue to grow and prosper in her life.

As the State continues to look for ways to minimize the cost of providing services to those with special needs, it's the support of our event participants, community events and corporate gifts that help ensure those we serve continue to receive the best possible services.

With the State moving one of the most needed services for youth with special needs from a waiver funded service to a full medicaid service, many families are facing changes they may not like.  The State of Florida has forced providers to apply as Medicaid providers, a long and tedious process with many obstacles in its path.  Henderson Haven submitted it's application in October and after losing the packet once, the State has still not been able to complete the process, a problem many agencies in the area are facing.  With services officially changing on July 1st, this could be a major issue for families.  Also, with the new program forcing families to bill their private insurance first, this will force them to use home health agencies that provide nothing more than baby sitting and personal care.  This, along with stringent guidelines that reduce the service, will greatly reduce the progress these young individuals so desperately need in order to lead full lives in the future.

Because of the great support from those of you participating in our events like our Charity Golf Tournament, the support of local businesses like The Heinz Corporation, and the support of local events such The Players and Birdies for Charity, Henderson Haven will be able to continue to provide needed one-on-one support designed to encourage improvement and not just personal care to those we serve regardless of the reduced expectations of the State.
Thank you for your continued support in our programs.  All of us at Henderson Haven appreciate your belief in our vision of everyone living the life they have chosen for themselves regardless of their perceived abilities.

It takes all of our business partners, volunteers, family members, directors, and of course, our dedicated staff working together to make this vision a reality for everyone in North Florida.  It's because of people like you that it's working, and it is.

We're proving that our system can work for anyone and we're even showing that in the long run, our way is cheaper.  We can see a future for Florida where segregation is a thing of the past and everyone is able to be a contributing member of their communities.

Sincerely,

Lee Henderson
