Why The Butterfly?
BellSouth
We chose the butterfly for our logo because of "The Butterfly Effect."  The meaning comes from a 1972 talk given by Edward Lorenz to the American Association for the Advancement of Science describing the chaos theory titled, "Does The Flap
Of A Butterfly's Wings In Brazil Set Off A Tornado In Texas."
In other words, the ripples of a very small change can make a huge difference down the road.

AAMSE was established by a group of professionals who came together in March, 2006 at a workshop on multi sensory environments (MSE) in Miami, Florida. Due to an increasing awareness and interest in MSE, the group decided to establish an Association as a way to bring together different disciplines to improve education, research, training and awareness in the use of MSE.

Greetings!

It seems as though times just keep getting tougher to live in.  With financial pressures mounting on all of us, its easy to forget there are still those that rely on our generosity.  Those served by Henderson Haven definitely fall into that category.

Please consider Henderson Haven the next time you're looking for a tax deductible donation source.  It's only through these kind supporters that we are able to keep the people we serve away from those that would take their life choices away.
We Turn to More Fundraising events      Budget cuts
As we fight along with everyone in these times to keep our heads above water and to insure those we serve are able to keep the choices they are making in their lives, we are turning to more community events than ever this year.  What started with the huge success of our First Annual Charity Golf Tournament will continue throughout the year with new events to meet everyone's interest.

The next event we have coming up on August 8th, will be our Ride for Independence Bike Scavenger Hunt.  This bike run with a twist is being presented by Ademac Harley Davidson is guaranteed to be great fun for any bike enthusiast.  For more information on this event, contact Beth Carson here or call her at 904-264-2522 ext. 820.

In September we'll be presenting a Murder Mystery Diner and Auction written especially for us and this event.  You'll have a great evening of food and fun as you work to solve the mystery in this entertaining who-done-it.  Plus, you'll have to opportunity to bid on St Augustine Street, an original Emmitt Fritz water color donated to Henderson Haven for this event.

To find out more about these and other upcoming events, contact us here or check our events page on our web site.
Multi-Sensory Gaining Exposer
MSE
Henderson Haven has long been a supporter of multi-sensory therapy.  We have been encouraged through the continued exposure and use of Multi-Sensory environments.   One of Henderson Haven's goals is to provide the first truly Mobile MSE in this country.

This $175,000 unit will house the most technologically advanced MSE equipment from England and will enable us to provide this needed service while keeping our mission of enabling those we serve to remain in their own communities.  It will also give us the opportunity to showcase what MSE is to the public by allowing them to experience it personally at local events.  This project has already received support from organizations like The Hidden Angel Foundation and The Sensory Company

Lee Henderson also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Multi Sensory Environment.  The AAMSE is a great source for up-to-date information on the many uses of MSE therapies.  We encourage you to to visit their web site for information and support their work.  We also would encourage you to to read this article from the Miami Herald on the use of an MSE room in special education.
Outside the Box has been Changing ThinkingADAMEC
Henderson Haven's Thinking Outside The Box series of presentations has been changing the way people think about the possibilities for those with developmental challenges in their lives.  Professional organizations such as LARCH and The Family Care Council have enjoyed these informative presentations and the feedback has been very positive.

"Inspiring", "Eye opening" and "You've changed the way I look at my job" are just a few of the comments we've received from those attending a presentation.  By demonstrating the way group based, segregated services break down any attempts for community inclusion with everyday examples we all understand, we're proving that natural supports can be used to cut the costs of providing non-segregated, one-on-one support services.  And we'll show you how what you may be doing is actually preventing that from happening.

For more information on how you and your group can benefit from one of these presentations, contact us here.
Thank you for your continued support in our programs.  All of us at Henderson Haven appreciate your belief in our vision of everyone living the life they have chosen for themselves regardless of their perceived abilities.

It takes all of our business partners, volunteers, family members, directors, and of course, our dedicated staff working together to make this vision a reality for everyone in North Florida.  It's because of people like you that it's working, and it is.

We're proving that our system can work for anyone and we're even showing that in the long run, our way is cheaper.  We can see a future for Florida where segregation is a thing of the past and everyone is able to be a contributing member of their communities.

Sincerely,

Lee Henderson
