Why The Butterfly?
We chose the butterfly for our logo because of "The Butterfly Effect." The meaning comes from a 1972 talk given by Edward Lorenz to the American Association for the Advancement of Science describing the chaos theory titled, "Does The Flap Of A Butterfly's Wings In Brazil Set Off A Tornado In Texas." In other words, the ripples of a very small change can make a huge difference down the road. |

APD Chooses Henderson Haven for CQL Training
In September of 2007, The Agency for Persons with Disabilities received a $500,000 Real Choice Systems Change: Person-Centered Planning Implementation Grant. APD's grant is based on a partnership with The Council on Quality Leadership, an international organization dedicated to excellence in the definition, measurement and improvement of quality of life for people with disabilities and people with mental illness. You can get more information about CQL here.
CQL will focus on the continued education and training of APD's Area Quality Leaders on CQL's Community Life strategy to define, measure and develop quality enhancement activities around community issues. What makes this exercise unique is that it isn't just talking about ideas - it's real action and change, inspiring people to make something happen.
Henderson Haven is proud to have been chosen by APD District 4 to be the agency used during this training of their Area Quality Leaders. We were chosen because of our commitment to choice and community inclusion. This action will also help prepare us for our goal of being the first organization in Florida to receive full CQL accreditation.

Where are Florida Services Headed? Florida is going through many changes in it's struggle to come up with a plan to provide the needed services to those people that qualify for them. As we continue to provide leadership in moving Florida's services to non-segregated environments, we can't help but worry about where they will ultimately be offered. While we and others like us have proven services can be successful when provided in non-segregated, community based ways and that it can even be more cost effective when natural community supports are utilized, the "Disability Industrial Complex" still pushes for segregated and isolated service concepts.

Thank you for your continued support in our programs. All of us at Henderson Haven appreciate your belief in our vision of everyone living the life they have chosen for themselves regardless of their perceived abilities.
It takes all of our business partners, volunteers, family members, directors, and of course, our dedicated staff working together to make this vision a reality for everyone in North Florida. It's because of people like you it's working, and it is.
We're proving that our system can work for anyone and we're even showing that in the long run, our way is cheaper. We can see a future for Florida where segregation is a thing of the past and everyone is able to be a contributing member of their communities.
