It's a new year! What a year it's going to be! As we look back at where we've come from and forward to where we're going, it's wonderful to see the positive changes we're making in lives of those we serve. We're grateful for the support and encouragement we have received from people like you.

The Delmarva Foundation, the agency contracted by the State to insure compliant performance, recently conducted an on site survey of our organization. They gave us a ranking of "Achieving", which is the highest possible ranking. Very few agencies in the North Florida area have received this honor.

In addition, the Foundation has placed us on their web site as an example of Provider Best Practices. You can log on and see what they had to share about our organization.

While this is a great honor and a true testament to the fact that we love what we do, we also feel it is important to recognize our direct care staff for their fantastic day to day performance in their work. They're are the ones that take our concepts and beliefs into the field and turn them into realities in the lives of those we serve.

We have joined forces with two programs in order to help generate funds. Ebay Giving Works and Shop For Charity Day, Inc. are two new ways that make it easy to help those we serve.

Ebay Giving Works enables us to raise funds in two ways: by listing our own items where 100% of the sale benefits those we serve, and then by enabling others to donate a portion of the items they sell on Ebay. This gives people an easy way to help our organization and receive a tax benefit as well.

Shop For Charity is an on-line mall where you can shop all the stores you normally would, with a portion of every sale going to help our organization. Name brand stores like Hickory Farms, EToys, The Swiss Colony, JoAnn Fabrics, and Masseys are just a sampling of the hundreds of retailers available.

The next time you're doing a little on-line shopping, whether it's an auction or traditional retail, log on to our home page and take the links located at the bottom of the page and help those we serve.

The Don Mixon Foundation has once again chosen Henderson Haven as the recipient of their annual golf tournament. So if you missed the fun last year, you have a second chance!

This year's tourney will be held in March and we'll being sending out more information as it becomes available. So make plans to come out and support our organization and have a lot of fun doing it!
If you're one of the hundreds that look for forward to our Annual Yard Sale, you're going to love this year's event! We're pulling out all the stops and making this year's sale a Summer SALEebration!

This year's event will be held on July 21st and will be indoors at the Cypress Club and Ballroom in Orange Park. We'll have the usual donated items to look through as well as: crafts and vendors, food items, family games and more! We're going to make this annual event a true family affair!

We're already taking donations so when you start your spring cleaning this year, don't toss it - give it! Your trash is another's treasure and it will help us to provide our services. We'll keep you updated as we get closer to the event.

At times the need for our services can be a little overwhelming. In fact, finding enough of the right people to put on staff to meet the demand can be one of our biggest challenges.

Often, the need is simple - just a caring person willing to be a companion for the day or a few hours. Just someone to hang out at the mall, go to the park or maybe a concert. These are perfect examples of when a volunteer can be a perfect fit.

Volunteer Jacksonville is an organization that helps connect community volunteers to organizations and events that can use their talents and abilities. Log on and see where you can make a difference!
All direct care staff were able to take a Saturday off and celebrate the Christmas holidays together. They all enjoyed an early dinner along with a live murder mystery made possible by the staff and cast at Prof essor Plum's Playhouse in Jacksonville. Virginia Smith was awarded the grand prize for solving the who-done-it, a custom chocolate holiday card made specifically for Henderson Haven by Hershey's Chocolate.

We want to thank the families and friends that made this possible by filling in and allowing staff to take the day off for the event.

I hope that you have found this newsletter enlightening. Please feel free to pass it along to anyone you think would enjoy it by clicking on the link below.

Many people have asked what we mean by the The Butterfly Effect. The meaning comes from a 1972 talk given by Edward Lorenz to the American Association for the Advancement of Science describing the chaos theory titled, "Does The Flap Of A Butterfly's Wings In Brazil Set Off A Tornado In Texas." In other words, the ripples of a very small change can make a huge difference down the road.

That's why we use the butterfly as our logo. The small changes we're making in the lives of those we serve can make a huge difference in the lives of everyone down the road. Dreams, no matter how small, can ripple out into certainty.

Sincerely,

Lee Henderson
