Welcome to the first edition of The Butterfly Effect - Henderson Haven's new quarterly e- news letter. This newsletter will keep you up to date on all of our activities, events and success stories. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoy living it!

The Knights of Columbus of St. Luke's Catholic Church came to our aid by presenting us with a check for $2149 The check was given to us to help begin an equipment lending program to use in conjunction with our advocacy services.

Lee Henderson receives the check
from Grand Knight, John Arias.

The money has been used to purchase equipment to use in daily living skills training as well as 8 communication boards. The boards can be used to help evaluate and train individuals so a case can be made to secure funding to purchase through other sources, such as VR or school systems.

Many times these other funding sources need to see some ability of use prior to being able to purchase this type of adaptive equipment. This can be difficult for some of the more involved individuals in our service. Having these devices available will enable us to help them learn to use them and then be able to demonstrate their ability.

Nothing demonstrates The Butterfly Effect more than the direct results of your financial help. So, we want to share with you the difference you're making in the lives of others.

Andrea lives with her parents in a mobile home in Clay county. Her parents had to carry Andrea into and out of the house, rain or shine, in order to get her to the car or on the bus for school. This was not just an inconvenience, it could be dangerous at times, especially during inclement weather.

Henderson Haven was able to team up with The James Boys, an outreach group of Orange Park United Methodist, to have a ramp built. Now Andrea, pictured with her father and Tami Mauldin, is able to remain in her chair and still have access to and from her home.

Andrea is just one example of the efforts Henderson Haven is going to, to make a difference in the lives of those we serve. Without your generous financial support, these efforts would not be possible. We'll be keeping you updated on other Butterfly Effects your support has made possible in future issues.

As you may know, we have been presenting a program to parent and civic groups for 4 years entitled Why We Do What We Do. The DVD version of this presentation is now available for anyone that would like a copy.

The purpose of this program is to explain our service concepts, beliefs and values. It helps families better understand what our goals are and how we plan to help them reach theirs. You'll learn about the history of service providers, where the concept originated and how's it's evolved. You'll also learn what we feel sets us apart and how some of our familes have come view our services and beliefs. Even if you have no need for our services, this program can help you see what changes are needed in the community.

Next time you change that printer cartridge, don't throw it, stow it! Then send them to us, or give us a call and we'll come get them. You can help us save on office supplies and help provide more services to more people who need them.

From paper to paper clips, we have to have them and they don't just give that stuff away. It adds up! By simply giving us your used ink cartridges, you can help us lower those expenses and spend more where it counts! So next time, toss it in a bag and we'll get rid of them for you. Better yet, get the whole office involved!
It's been five years since Sherri Henderson began working with her first individual and demonstrating what a difference something as simple as choice can make. That was the beginning of the Henderson Haven difference. Five years later, we wanted to recognize those employees that have been here from the beginning, and are still with us today.

During our last staff meeting, eight employees were presented with an award recognizing their dedication to Henderson Haven and our commitment to choice. Tabatha Dixon, Hope Dover, Tami Mauldin, Sandra Rosario, Roschelle Sapp, Virginia Smith, Erin Swenson, and Fallyn Ziegler, pictured receiving her award, were all honored. Fallyn was our first official employee and began working for us the day she turned 18.

It's because of dedicated staff like these that we are able to provide the type of services we do. With our commitment to one on one services, choice, and long term employees, we can't help but continue to raise the bar in support services.

I hope that you have found this newsletter enlightening. Please feel free to pass it along to anyone you think would enjoy it by clicking on the link below.

Many people have asked what we mean by the The Butterfly Effect. The meaning comes from a 1972 talk given by Edward Lorenz to the American Association for the Advancement of Science describing the chaos theory titled, "Does The Flap Of A Butterfly's Wings In Brazil Set Off A Tornado In Texas." In other words, the ripples of a very small change can make a huge difference down the road.

That's why we use the butterfly as our logo. The small changes we're making in the lives of those we serve can make a huge difference in the lives of everyone down the road. Dreams, no matter how small, can ripple out into certainty.

Sincerely,

Lee Henderson
