Arizona Centennial Legacy Project
|
|
We are pleased and honored to announce that our US Route 89 project has been designated as an official Arizona Centennial Legacy Project. Arizona will be celebrating 100 years of statehood in 2012. Many communities and organizations are undertaking projects to highlight the history and culture of Arizona and to establish a legacy for the future. The Arizona Historical Advisory Commission set criteria for qualifying to be a designated part of the centennial and accepted our application at its February meeting.
We are making plans to add a new section to the website about the history of US Route 89 and its importance to the development of commerce and tourism in Arizona. We will be reaching out to communities along the road seeking historic photographs and stories. We are going to start with some "then and now" photographs that will depict changes along the road over the last 100 years.
You can help. We are looking for old photographs, postcards and other memorabilia from US Route 89 and its predecessors. We are also interested in talking to anyone with stories we can record about driving on 89 especially before the Interstate highways came into being. All of this will create a richer experience for today's traveler and help promote tourism along this beautiful and historic highway.

Prescott Indian Art Market |
|
Here is an event to add to your art lover's road trip. Prescott is a wonderful place to visit in the summer and this event will be well worth the trip. If you are coming from the south, be sure to drive to Wickenburg and then take Arizona Route 89 through Yarnell and the Peeples Valley. See the Wickenburg to Prescott road trip guide.
From the north, take either AZ 89A through the Verde Valley and over Mingus Mountain or exit I-40 at Ash Fork for a trip through the Chino Valley to Prescott. Go to the Prescott to Flagstaff road trip guides for more information.
Saturday, July 10 - Sunday, July 11, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sharlot Hall Museum, 415 W. Gurley St., Prescott
One of the premier Native American art markets in the southwest, Prescott Indian Art Market features both traditional and contemporary works of art, including distinctive jewelry, exquisite ceramics, sculpture, hand-woven baskets and blankets. An all-Indian artist jury chooses participants on the basis of quality in both traditional and contemporary styles. This year's featured artist is Randy Keedah, the self-taught Navajo artist who specializes in Western, American Indian, and Southwestern fine art. Highlights include demonstrations of American Indian weaving, Katsina carving, silversmithing, and the making of baskets. Entertainment is provided by Native American dancers, singers, and musicians in the Museum Amphitheater. More information: 928-445-3122; www.sharlot.org

| US Route 89 Magazine |
|
Because of the wonderful response we had to the e-book and printed versions of the Road Trip Map Book, we have decided to publish a bimonthly magazine in the same formats. Each issue will detail one aspect of what makes US Route 89 so special.
The next issue, which will be available by the end of March, will highlight the National Parks and Monuments along US 89. As was the case with Issue #1, The Road Trip Map Book, geologist Wayne Ranney has written the introduction. For a limited time, you can download a pdf of Wayne's essay, The National Parks of US Route 89. We hope you enjoy it.
If you have an interest in geology and geography of the West, Wayne's blog, Earthly Musings, is always interesting.
