April: Believe to Achieve
Through my 25 years of performing, I always felt it was important to keep adding new skills to my “bag of tricks.” My philosophy was to share a skill I had with other performers in exchange for a skill they had to offer. I learned some amazing things like unicycling, magic, and fire eating from some amazing performers over the years. I always felt fairly confident in my juggling skills. I had been juggling for 15 years and had a very “clean,” complex three ball routine choreographed to the song "Dueling Banjos." I never believed that five ball juggling was within my skill set and I was very proud of my three-ball routine. That is until a good friend of mine, Merry, who is a great juggler herself, invited me to a juggling convention. It was everything I expected. There were a bunch of people in a large gymnasium juggling all kinds of objects such as pins, balls, hats, swords, you name it. Then the unexpected caught my eye, a young boy no more than 14 years old stood three feet from me. This boy looked like any other kid- wearing jeans, shirt hanging out, sporting the latest tennis shoes. The difference was what he was carrying. He was holding a blue velvet bag and out of the bag he retrieved five beautiful red juggling balls. In my memory, they were sparkling. He picked up all five balls and right in front of me, juggled them for several minutes with no drops. As graceful as a dancer, he caught the five balls in his hands, placed them back into his velvet bag and walked off as if nothing out of the ordinary had just happened. Now remember, I had been juggling for 15 years and he was not even 15 years old. I knew at that moment that I had been limiting my potential due to a limiting belief. I made a decision in that instant that I would juggle five balls. Two days later at 4:00 in the morning, my wife Michelle woke up to my screaming. “I did it, I did juggle 5 balls.” The belief that I had for fifteen years changed completely in two days. Now I am a five ball juggler. It took one instant to decide and just over 48 hours to realize my new belief.Learn to juggle three balls with Curtis. Click here
What do you Believe?
Do you know where your beliefs come from? They accumulate throughout your lifetime from different experiences and different people – your parents, friends, teachers, supervisors, the media, and many others who influence you. And then you bring those viewpoints to work, to your relationships, and to yourself through your attitude.
Your beliefs guide you every single day. They influence your actions, your decisions, your attitude toward yourself and others. And yet how often do you stop and think about what you believe – and more importantly, why you believe it? By analyzing what you believe, you can help shape your future, consistently focus your vision and unify your efforts to be successful. It can also help you identify the “old scripts” that may be holding you back from making the changes you’d like to make in your life. Today: What do you believe? Write down your own belief statements. Sit quietly for a few minutes before you begin. Listen to yourself. Give this exercise your complete attention, because it’s the basis for another exercise that follows. Write at least 50 belief statements. To help get you started...What do you believe about your personal image, your work/career life, your personal relationships, money and finances, your talents, your childhood/parents/siblings, success, failure, everything else? This Week: How do beliefs guide us? When asked “how are you?” pay attention to your answer. Do you say “fine” or “good”? Is “fine” or “good” all you ever want to be? Each time you answer this question you are creating a belief by repeating the same answer each time. I challenge you this week to get passionate and answer the question “how are you?” enthusiastically with “living the dream.” Pay close attention to the reactions you receive and notice your own perspective changing. “When you believe in a thing, believe in it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably.” Walt Disney. This month: Will you change a limiting belief? Review your 50 belief statements from above. Keep in mind that limiting statements hold you back from reaching your goals, while empowering statements guide you every day toward your full potential. Identify one limiting belief statement. What can you do to turn this into an empowering belief? Create an everyday action (like the living the dream example above) to turn this into an empowering belief?

In October, I was hospitalized for depression-a disease I’ve been trying to fight for the majority of my life. No one, not a doctor or nurse or counselor, has been able to give me the sort of inspiration you gave to me (last night). I walked out the doors with a new outlook and the desire to become more confident with myself and with my life. It’s my belief that I will become a chorus teacher and not only teach but learn from children about music, life and love. I feel refreshed and a sense of pride about myself, and you helped me to begin the search for that. Yesterday I was afraid to live. Tomorrow, I’ll teach someone to juggle.

When you spoke, I was hurt, confused and almost resentful by some of the things you said. How dare you question that my hopes, wishes, and dreams are superficial to that of my beliefs? It's been over two years since I heard you speak and I'm finally starting to "get" and understand some of the things you said. I realize how vital beliefs are to actualizing any of our hopes, wishes and dreams! Without belief in yourself there is nothing. So thank you for encouraging me to stand up for my beliefs and create a brighter future, not only for myself, but those whose lives I have the ability to touch for the better.
