On Fire
It only takes a spark to get a fire going,
And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing;
That's how it is with God's Love,
Once you've experienced it,
Your spread the love to everyone
You want to pass it on.
(from the song Pass It On, by Kurt Kaiser)
While I could have been thinking about sparks and fires as a result of the unusual summer heat I suspect that it was the Holy Spirit that made me remember this song from my youth.
As I thought about the lyrics I couldn't help but think of a variety of recent Marianist events that made me profoundly appreciative of the Communion of Saints, our Marianist Martyrs, our Founders, and the generations of vowed and lay Marianists who have kept and keep the spark alive and pass on the Marianist charism.
In June four Brothers professed First Vows in the Society of Mary.
In June and July the charism was shared with high school youth in the LIFE program
In June, the International Organization of Marianist Lay Communities (IO-MLC) issued a Circular, Marianist Lay Communities: A Community of Communities, connecting us all together.
Lay Marianist Neomi DeAnda was recognized by the National Catholic Reporter as one of "Twelve Catholic women under 40 making a difference."
In July, the Society of Mary and the Daughters of Mary Immaculate both are holding General Chapters to read and respond to the signs of the times.
In July, lay Marianists in Dayton opened their communities to incoming freshman at the University of Dayton (see below).
And Marianist retreat centers continue to offer programs, to individuals, families and young people.
What a gift we have, and are, to the church and to the larger world.
We are truly blessed.
Pass it on!
Peace,
Matt Dunn, Editor

Marianist Lay Communities Extend Hospitality to UD Students
Members of Micah have dinner with students in the Callings program.
Marianist Lay Communities Micah, Nazareth, Nassau/St.Paul, Edgar Avenue, a UD lay student community, and hosts Joan and AJ Wagner each hosted dinners for students in the University of Dayton's Callings program. Students spent time over several days learning about UD's themes of Learn, Lead, and Serve and explored their purpose in life, their role as students, and what they're call in life might be.

Meeting/Discussion Resources

In the last newsletter we asked for recommendations about meeting resources and topics. Several communities, at the encouragement of the NE Marianist Family Council, are utilizing Things Marianist and Talking Points, both published by the North American Center for Marianist Studies (NACMS).
Things Marianist explores, in a snapshot kind of way, various Marianist topics. Talking Points is the new companion piece to Things Marianist and offers discussion questions and prayers that can be used to coincide with the discussion.
They can be purchased by topic or you can buy the entire set of 12. That will keep you talking for at least a year!
Additionally, the Micah community recently watched an immigration video, and used discussion questions and prayers all made available by the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative(MSJC). MSJC has a wide array of resources on a variety of social justice topics. Some are available for download and others can be loaned to you. |
Outreach in Dayton - Save the Date
Chaminade-Julienne High School does not have a supplemental lunch program. Some students, with financial need, can go hungry through the day. To address that need, C-J has a pantry.
Members of the Marianist family have gotten together to start a fundraiser for the food pantry to make sure it is stocked.
On Sunday, September 30th, from 11:30-1:30, there will be a pancake breakfast, in the Si Lounge at Mt. St. John, hosted by the Grand Walkers Community and the QAC Social Justice Committee.
Cost is $5 per plate. Proceeds will go to the food pantry.
The event is open to the public. So spread the word to support this great cause! Pass it on!

Day of Reflection
The GLBT Issue Team of the Marianist Social Justice Collaborative has done significant work to help our communities to be inclusive of glbt people.
Its fall outreach is specifically for glbt people, their families, and friends. It is also appropriate for others who want to be supportive of glbt people.
The Day of Reflection is Saturday, September 22nd at Mt. St. John. If it successful, it could possibly be repeated in other parts of the country.

Share Your Stories!
Don't be the proverbial lamp under the bushel basket!
We'd love to feature a new/different community or even an individual lay Marianist in each issue of the newsletter. As a community of communities we want to remember and celebrate that we are all companions on this journey inspired by Fr. Chaminade, Adele, and Marie Therese. If you have a prayer service to share, meeting topic suggestions, stories about social experiences or service projects please let us know!! If you know a lay Marianist doing great things let us know so we can give them a shout out! You can send stories and pictures to laymarianist@gmail.com to be included in our newsletter!
Thanks for reading to the end!
