Here I Am, Lord
Over the next couple weeks we will hear about the call of the prophet Samuel and several of the apostles.
Many thoughts could be shared about what it means that we too are called.
Yet we aren't called simply to be followers. Through our baptism, we are called to become like Jesus Christ, Son of God, become Son of Mary, for the transformation of the world. By our Marianist vocation, we are inspired by the Spirit and united with Mary to live our call to make Christ present in the world.
The world, as it had been known until the Incarnation of Christ, would no longer be the same because of his presence.
As members of Marianist Lay Communities we have resources available to us for our own formation. We have opportunities to learn about ourselves, our faith, about current events, and how to take a stand on important issues.
How is the world different because you are in it? Do you believe that one person can make a difference?
How is the world different because of your community? Or because of the Marianist Family?
How do we support each other individually and communally when we struggle to be counter-cultural, when we have priorities different than our neighbors, when we believe in justice but settle for charity?
We have great examples in Christ, in Fr. Chaminade and Adele, and in present day people like Martin Luther King, Jr. As you refine your new year's goals or resolutions, be sure to add "make a difference" to the list.
Peace and Love,
Matt D. |

Community Highlight - Ahava
"Called by the Spirit as members of the Ahava Community, we commit ourselves to respond to the needs of the world with the same faith as Mary Our Mother when she said "Yes" to God's call. Brought together in community by our shared faith, we dedicate ourselves to bring about transformation to a world in need. We will intentionally live out the incarnation in our daily lives with an outpouring of our love, in a constant state of I will giveness. With joyful hearts, willing spirits, and open minds, we devote ourselves to living out our Marianist charism."
Congratulations and welcome to the Ahava Marianist lay community, who committed to living the Marianist charism and mission on December 10th in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at the University of Dayton.

Prayer to Fr. Chaminade
Sunday, January 22 is the Memorial of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade and the close of the Chaminade Year. Below is a prayer that has guided many through the year. As the year comes to a close let us keep it ever fresh in our minds that while a special time has passed our mission continues.
Blessed Chaminade,
in troubled and troubling times
you found a way to keep your faith
in God and in human destiny.
Certain that the Lord's Word
would be fulfilled
you dedicated yourself
to the Woman chosen by God
to bring forth to the world
the Word made flesh.
Watch over us and bless us as we also strive to
become a communion of saints whose lives
bring forth Christ,
a community of missionaries of Mary
whose joy it is to work along with her
for the coming of the Kingdom.
May the Spirit who came upon her
and who inspired you
lead us to that faith of the heart
which will enable us
in all our different works to
"Do whatever He tells us."
And so may the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit be glorified in all places through the
Immaculate Virgin Mary. |
Remembering Adele
On January 10 we remember Mother Adele whose involvement in the Sodality furthered the mission of the Sodality and also inspired both women and men to profess religious vows. The legacy of her work with Fr. Chaminade continues today among Marianist Lay Communities, the Society of Mary, and the Daughters of Mary Immaculate. |
Race: The Power of Illusion
On January 16 we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Follow this LINK for an activity asking you to identify a person's race based on their appearance. The results may surprise you. If you navigate around the site you'll find other activities and quizes that may test you and challenge you.
To learn more about racial and immigrant justice, visit the MSCJ website and learn what the Marianist Family is doing about these issues.
