MARIANIST REFLECTION July 2010

Saying "Yes!"
If you spent last weekend at the Marianist Lay Network of North America Assembly in Honolulu a few things would have amazed you. First, the Assembly was not limited to North America as fifteen Lay Marianists came from South Korea to add amazing Grace to the event. Second, the Islands of Hawaii may be beautiful, but they are not as beautiful as the Hawaiian people.
The people of Hawaii are different. They are steeped in the Spirit of Aloha - an essence of being that transcends the daily and the practical. Brother John Campbell came to Hawaii from Florida after years of work at Chaminade-Madonna High School in Hollywood. Brother John proclaims the people of Hawaii as filled with peace. It's not the tropical setting that brings this feeling, it's the Aloha, the essence of who someone is.
Isabella Moyers provides some sense of this in her slide show posted on YouTube. Her pictures include lush greens, flowering plants and gorgeous panoramas but check out the smiles. Feel the grace of the Hula being danced in the Mystical Rose Oratory. Imagine the joy of a chapel filled with dancing and singing in English, Spanish and Korean.
This is "Yes!" Hawaiian style. This is "Yes!" Marianist style. A "Yes!" filled with hospitality, community and faith. A "Yes!" that comes as naturally as Aloha.
peace and love, aj
