MARIANIST REFLECTION April 2010

Saying "Yes!"
On an emotional level I find Good Friday very complicated. There is the tragedy of Jesus dying on the cross and the scene of his mother standing in earnest suffering with him. Tears of sorrow for the pain my sins have cost seem to be in order.
On the other hand, there is this feeling of avoiding a near death experience as I come to realize that I have been saved from my many sins. Should I not rejoice? On a logical level, however, I must come to understand what it means to be "saved" by God's selfless act of love and redemption. I must fit into my thinking how one should approach this occasion of ongoing grace. I must seek a way to solve the problem of my sinfulness which remains a barrier to my own resurrection.
If I am to love God as much as God has loved me, I must say, "Yes!" I must stand at the cross like St. John, take Mary into my care and complete the mission she started. The death of Christ made grace possible, the resurrection made it probable, but it is our "Yes!" that makes God's love palpable.
Blessed Easter to all in peace and love, aj
