PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

We have heard from many of our clients that business is favorable and many of you are fully engaged in the peak of the moving season. The economic upswing is evident and moving companies are seeing positive signs of change.

Recently President Obama signed the $105 billion Transportation Bill bringing to an end a long battle over road and transit spending. The agreement consolidates programs at the Department of Transportation and sets forth many positive requirements and provisions that span the gamut from funding to safety.

Some of the highlights of this legislation to the moving industry:

truckdivider
  • It strengthens household goods entry requirements to help rid the industry of rogue movers.
  • It mandates electronic logging devices and lays the groundwork for possible improvement to the hours-of-service rule.
  • It provides a process for expediting CDLs for veterans.

Environmental incidents can be costly. Whether it is a release from a vehicle accident, or an accidental discharge at your facility, any spill that requires emergency environmental clean-up can set off a complicated and potentially expensive chain of events.

To help our customers with all aspects of an environmental clean-up both Zurich and Chartis have developed 24 hour spill reporting programs that coordinate clean-up, reporting and claims management. Further details on both programs are summarized below.

This edition of our newsletter is also full of resource information for summer Loss Control preparation including:

  • Heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
  • Hurricane season is looming and preparation is critical. You can brush up on tips, safety and what to do in the event of an emergency by visiting this link.

Finally, we feel it is important for you to know and understand the important changes in OSHA Hazard Communication Standards and will provide you with more information below.

It is our mission to continue to strive toward providing the best products and industry expertise to the moving and storage industry. We appreciate your continued support!

Protecting Workers from the Effects of Heat

At times, workers may be required to work in hot environments for long periods. When the human body is unable to maintain a normal temperature, heat-related illnesses can occur and may result in death.

It has been shown that a worker's ability to focus attention and the worker's reaction times can be dramatically reduced by even a 2 percent dehydration level due to heat stress.

Hurricane Preparation

History teaches that a lack of hurricane awareness and preparation are common threads among all major hurricane disasters. By knowing your vulnerability and what actions you should take, you can reduce the effects of a hurricane disaster. Hurricane hazards come in many forms, including storm surge, heavy rainfall, inland flooding, high winds, tornadoes, and rip currents. The National Weather Service is responsible for protecting life and property through issuance of timely watches and warnings, but it is essential that you be before a storm approaches. Follow the links for more information. But remember, this is only a guide. The first and most important thing anyone should do when facing a hurricane threat is to use common sense.
