Young Judaea Camps are truly a family affair

Young Judaeans have always been a family, and so many campers are second and third generation Judaeans. Here are reports from some of the YJ Camps and camp families:

Multi generational kids at sprout 2011

Muti-generational campers at Camp Young Judaea Sprout Lake

Camp Young Judaea Sprout Lake was thrilled to have a record number of children of Sprout Lake/Young Judaea alumni at camp this summer!  It is so wonderful that these campers are continuing their parents' Young Judaea legacy.  We hope next summer will bring even more campers of alumni!  See more photos here

CYJ Texas dedication alumni

Several generations of Judaeans celebrate the dedication at CYJT

At CYJ-Texas, we are proud to have dedicated our new kitchen "Savta's

Kitchen" in memory of Peggy Samet Fine.   "Savta" was a founder of the Beth Yeshurun Jewish pre-school and day school program in Houston, Texas, where she spent 27 years as an educator and principal, developing an integrated Judaica and secular curriculum.  She was a talented pianist, gifted poet, stand-up comedian, and ardent Zionist who, together with her husband Leon Samet, generously supported Camp Young Judaea - Texas where their 5 children and many grandchildren were campers and later became staff members. Marnina Abrams wrote: "I went to CJ (NC), CYJ (midwest in MI) & TY. I have worked at CYJ Midwest (WI) 5 times, including the last few years. I also worked at West for 2 summers. All three of my siblings attended CYJ Midwest for at least 1 summer. With me during the past 5 summers at West and/or Midwest, my two children were campers. My son is only going into 8th grade but he is already talking about Year Course. That is a legacy I am so proud of."

Rachel Keiles Park let us know that when she picked her child up at TY this summer it completed a circle that began in the 1970's.

As has been the case every August going back decades, the leaders of the movement came together at Tel Yehudah for their annual ritual in which the most critical issues of the movement were debated and addressed. Summer Israel Programs Update

On August 3, 143 happy, tan, and exhuasted but excited teens landed back in the US after spending 5 weeks touring Israel with YJ Summer Programs.  The group was comprised of 101 Judaeans and 42 participants new to YJ who went on YJ Discovery.  Girl with Shofar
The participants came from all over the U.S and overseas, including Puerto Rico, France, Hungary, Ireland, and Israel, and ranged in age from 14 to 18, and grade from 9th to 12th. Among our participants were the children, grandchildren, siblings, and nieces and nephews of YJ Alumni. Each of  the 8 American madrichim (staff) working with the participants this summer are Judaeans who wanted to share their YJ experiences with a new generation.
This summer there were an incredible 5,150 photos posted on facebook on the official YJ Summer Programs in Israel page!
On behalf of the YJ offices in NY and Israel, we want to thank the participants and their families for an AMAZING summer!

You Probably grew up in Young Judaea If...

You have been excited to be involved in this alumni generated project on Facebook this summer!

Long forgotten memories are being dug up, some funny, some sad, some that just make you go ohhhhh - a few of our favorites are:

...Ani v'atah became a mantra that you just couldn't shake.

..."oooh baby" is part of birkat hamazon, regardless of the circumstances.

...The leadership skills you learned 30 years ago, you are still using today.

...Middle school and high school were those annoying breaks between summers at camp.

Amirim: 130 College Students make a difference in Israel with Young Judaea

Amirim photo September 2011

As Young Judaea's 2011 Amirim summer program draws to an end, the verdict is in: by all accounts, it has been a fantastic summer for students and young adults from all over the world, making a significant effort to help Israel.

With 130 participants choosing to take part in a four- or eight-week session, registration numbers were up more than 50% from 2010, making Amirim by far the biggest program of its kind.   The perfect bridge from short-term to long-term Israel programs, Amirim provides an immersive experience into Israeli society for university students and young professionals. This program has been a valuable way for Birthright and Young Judaea alumni to return to Israel for a more adult experience, and this summer was no different. Read the rest of the article here.

Machon 69 Reunion

machon photoSindy Wayne writes: The July 30th reunion of Machon L'Madrichei Chu'l Machzor 69 (1981-82) in Philadelphia, PA was a great success!  Twenty Machonikim, former members of 5 different youth movements, came from across the US and Israel (a Young Judaean after dropping his son off at TY!). In addition, we connected via Skype with our chevrei in England, Israel, and Mexico.  Seven of the 15 members of the Young Judaea kvutza attended.  Throughout the weekend, we easily re-connected after 30 years, reminisced about the life changing experiences we shared together in Israel, and laughed long into the night. Check more photos here

 Camp Judaea's 50th Anniversary Reunion

This Labor Day weekend, almost 150 alumni, supporters and friends gathered at Camp Judaea in Hendersonville, NC,CJ reunion photo

to celebrate 50 years 'full of joy and laughter.' The attendees spanned the decades from those who were campers in the 1950's at Blue Star to those who will be campers in a few short years! They gathered for shira in the chadar, t'fillot in the new Amphitheater, and to see old friends. There were discussions on America's role with Israel and what it means to be a Zionist. The highlights of the weekend included jumping on the trampoline in the lake, climbing and ziplining on CJ's tower, and playing in the traditional Shabbat softball game. Find out more about the reunion on the CJ 50th site
