Returning Home To Young Judaea
| |
As part of Young Judaea's continuing mission to provide excellent resources to our current Chanichim, we are proud to announce that Rachel Comstock has returned to Young Judaea as

our new Year Round Programs Associate.
Rachel has a long history with the Movement. From Salem, Oregon , She was heavily involved with Young Judaea as a chanicha. As a member of Young Judaea Rachel attended Camp Young Judaea Northwest and also served as Regional Ofarim-Tsofim Programmer for two years and Mazkira of the Pacific Northwest Region (PNW) while in high school. After graduating high school, Rachel attended Young Judaea Year Course before attending Brandeis University to study anthropology and art history - she ultimately wrote her honors thesis on the modern practices of Jewish tattooing.
Another Young Judaea groupie, throughout college she maintained her involvement with Young Judaea by working at Camp Tel Yehudah for a total of five summers; where she was a counselor and then a merekezet (unit head) for Alumim (the youngest age group). Like so many of us, she just never grew out of wanting to be at summer camp.
Growing up, Young Judaea was the one place where Rachel didn't have to be the "Jewish girl" and served as the major outlet in the formation of herJewish identity (there are not many Jews where she grew up). In addition to this personal connection, Rachel strongly agrees with the principles of Young Judaea as a Jewish, pluralist, Zionist youth movement. It is for this reason that she is excited to be working for Young Judaea in the Year Round Programs department in hopes that she can contribute to the continuation of Young Judaea as a youth organization that has a strong positive affect on Jewish teens.
In her new position Rachel will work closely with the Mazkirut, advise chanichim, and tirelessly advocate for more regional and year-round programming.
If you would like to speak with Rachel about her new responsibilities, or just learn more about her - you can contact her at rcomstock@youngjudaea.org or at 212-303-4586.

Jerri (Cohen) Blitzer (TY '74-'77, Maz '76-77, YC '77-78, Coordinator for Uri Tzafon '78-'80) and has served as the Madricha for the Young Judaea Dance Troupe since 2007. She writes:

from 3rd grade on. I was at Tel Yehudah 1974-77, Bogrim Programmer for Ganei Yehudah 1976-77, and a member of the famous Year Course 1977-78. I worked as the Western Coordinator for Uri Tzafon during my first couple of years of college. Then I lost my formal connection with Young Judaea, however, the spirit and values stayed with me always. I married Rob, a Hebrew School buddy, and we settled in Central New Jersey where we raise our 2 daughters, Monica and Stephanie. I am a Physical Therapist, but my volunteer time has been focused on Jewish Youth Programming. Our children were involved with Kadima in our synagogue, but when the discussion about summer camp came up there was no doubt that Camp Young Judaea Sprout Lake was their destination. so.....L'dor V' Dor.
Our children are 3rd generation Young Judaeans, as my Mom, Rita Cohen, was also a member of Young Judaea in the Boston area. My husband, Rob, was able to see first hand the benefits of our children's involvement with Young Judaea and has been most supportive of the investment we have made towards it. The saying in our home is "nobody does it like Young Judaea." I remember the flood of emotion the first day we drove Monica up to Tel Yehudah. Tears streamed down my face as I rolled down the window to check her in. Monica was a bit embarrassed, but quickly explained that I was not crying because she was leaving me, but instead I was crying because I had not been back to Tel Yehudah since I was a Chanicha.
 | | Jerri Blitzer and Jody Kussin on YC '77-'78 |
Meanwhile, I have been blessed with a wonderful Shichvah that has reconnected with the power of email and facebook. Our first reunion for our 25th anniversary was a confirmation that Young Judaea friendships last a life time. We have had 3 reunions the last one at CYJ Texas!! Next year in Florida (check the Alunmi Programs and Reunions section for more information!!)
My children are also leaders in Young Judaea. Monica was on Mazkirut for EPA, Year Course 2009-10 and a Madricha at Tel Yehudah this past summer. She is also giving back, volunteering to staff YJ programming during the year as she can. Stephanie is Social Action Programmer for Ganei Yehudah. She takes very seriously the charge of Tikun Olam, and recently returned from her first Young Judaea Alternative Winter Break in New Orleans. As the Young Judaea Liason for my local Hadassah Chapter I am always seeking out ways to strengthen the bridge between Hadassah and Young Judaea. I believe that Hadassah needs to be the virtual site for Young Judaea, getting their children and/or grandchildren involved so that they also can reap the benefits of YJ programming.
I also serve as the Madricha of our Young Judaea Dance Troupe, a personal love of mine.
As a Young Judaean from the 70's, I remember with a smile singing loudly on Friday night as we danced around the Chadar Ochel, and then Saturday night in a wonderfully close circle for Havdalah under the stars, followed by rikkud with such ruach! Israeli Dancing is part of our Young Judaea culture....after all we are a Zionist Youth Movement. So several years ago I was thrilled to learn from my oldest daughter, Monica, that Young Judaea has an Israeli Dance Troupe based in East Brunswick, NJ. This troupe performs at the Annual Israel Dance Festival in New York City. From November to April, the Dance Troupe meets a few hours a week under the direction of Sara Alter, our talented and creative choreographer.
The Dance Troupe attracts youth from all over Central New Jersey. For many of our dancers this is their first introduction to Young Judaea. We are always looking for ways to reach out to more Jewish Youth in our area. A few years ago, when the financial crisis hit Hadassah and the cuts to year round programming occurred the Dance Troupe was essentially without any funding. Not willing to see this tradition end, I voluteered to step in as the Madricha for this troupe. This is the third year that I will have the pleasure to watch this troupe form and develop into a strong, supportive group that will shine on the stage at the Israel Dance Festival on April 3rd. It is always a thrill to see the fruits of their labor.
Through donations from generous individuals, and fundraising by the troupe, we are able to meet the expenses to be a part of this festival. This year marks the 60th anniversary of this Festival and Young Judaea is proud to be the only group that has performed at everyone of the 60 festivals. The theme of last year's festival was a tribute to Bob Levine (a Young Judaea Alumni and a member of the very first YJ Israel Summer Program) and a Salute to Young Judaea's 100th anniversary. You can watch the entire festival singing Ani V'Atah here as a tribute to YJ! This year's festival on April 3rd is a MUST BE THERE event....to support the Young Judaea Dance Troupe and to salute the Festival's 60th anniversary.
If you would like to help with the YJ Dance Troupe or know a current 8th-11th grader who would like to join, or just reconnect with Jerri - please contact her at jblitzeryj@gmail.com or at 601-426-8650.

Passings
Young Judaea is sad to note the passings of the following members of our community. May their memories be a blessing and their families be comforted among the mourners of Zion.
Esther Rubin Esther Rubin passed away on July 19, 2010 at the age of 99 1/2. Mrs. Rubin was the living embodiment of Young Judaeas ideals and history. In 1928 as a high school senior living in the Bronx, she was awarded first prize in the Young Judaea essay contest "What Palestine Means to Me", winning a three month trip to Palestine. On the boat traveling to Palestine in 1929, Esther met Painter Reuven Rubin. They married the next year in Tel Aviv. The three month trip to Palestine became 81 exciting and wonderful years. Mrs. Rubin is survived by her son David, her daughter Ariella Giniger, her grand and great-grandchildren. She will be missed by her family and friends around the world.
Debbie Friedman Friedman, whose music transformed Jewish worship in synagogues and summer camps, died Jan. 9 at the age of 59 after being diagnosed with pneumonia and admitted to a hospital a few days earlier. Debbie was known for the spirit and love she used to blend the folk music roots of the 1960s and 1970s and combine them with traditional Jewish prayers and liturgy. She was frequently described as the "Joan Baez of Jewish song." Decades of Young Judaeans have been touched by her uplifiting songs, and tunes used at camps, conventions and on Israel programs including "Miriam's Song", "Not By Might - Not By Power", "Mi Shebeirach" and "Im Tirtzu". Molly Stein, National Mazkira said in remembrance of Debbie "As a Jewish pluralistic organization, her innovations to modern Jewish practice have left an indelible mark on our approach to spirituality and song. We will honor Debbie and her work through continuing to incorporate her melodies and spirit in our communal observances and ceremonies."
