Tell us your favorite memory(ies) from Young Judaea:  Making some of the best friends of my life, shira and rikud, traveling to Israel.

How has your Young Judaea experience impacted your life today?  I'm still close with so many of my YJ friends and we keep in touch.   I love going to weddings and seeing all of them and I hope our kids will go to camp together!  It also made me have a stronger Jewish identity and love of Israel.  I learned more in my years in YJ than I ever did at Hebrew school.

Please describe your current professional involvement.  What do you do?
I am a writer at The Jewish Federations of North America.

Are you currently involved with Young Judaea or Hadassah?  I am a lifetime member of Hadassah.

Please describe how/if your YJ experience encouraged you to visit/have closer ties to Israel.  Growing up in YJ made me want to live in Israel for an extended period of time... that's why I spent the year after college working for Year Course in Jerusalem. It was the most incredible experience. I have always felt a close bond with Israel and miss it very much.

Where are you living now?  Brooklyn, NY with my husband Jed and my son Noah.

Have you returned to Israel since your YJ experience
?  Yes, to visit friends and because I was "homesick."

Young Judaea Events and News
National Midwinter Convention, 2010, CYJ Texas, Wimberley, TX
By Joel Srebrenik, National Mazkir
Last weekend I had the privilege of planning and attending Young Judaea's National Midwinter Convention 2010 in Wimberley, Texas. We spent the weekend addressing the question: "What does it mean to love Israel and is it enough?" The program included everything from electives about different challenges facing Israel, to a YJ alumni panel who shared their stories about what kind of action they took when they were our age. The panel included Sean Macdonald, current YC participant and member of Garin Tzedek, Bar Twito, member of Garin Atid 2002-2003 and the tsofim 1996-2002, David Weinstein, Director of TY, Avi Mendelowitz, YC 1961-62 and who also marched with MLK on behalf of YJ, and Shelley Sherman, Coordinator for YJ.  The last day of convention was spent allowing everyone to start acting on the causes of our generation, everything from relief efforts in Haiti, to nuclear proliferation in Iran, to the issue of gay rights in Israel. All in all, Convention was a great chance to examine the new generation of challenges that face Zionism, while still celebrating the Young Judaea traditions of the last one hundred years.

Young Judaea Israeli Dance Troup, 59th Annual Israel Folk Dance Festival
Save the date for the the YJ Israeli Dance Troupe as they perform in the 59th Annual Israel Folk Dance Festival and Festival of the Arts at Queens College in NYC on March 21, 2010.  Our Young Judaeans started rehearsing back in September and are keeping the tradition alive.  YJ is the only organization that has danced in this New York festival every year since its inception in 1951.  This festival brings together Israeli dance troupes from all over the country; hundreds of spectators are expected.

This year's festival is honoring Young Judaea and its 100th anniversary!  Prior to the show, check out the festival of the arts as it will showcase Young Judaea.  The arts festival welcomes vendors selling Judaica (jewelry, holiday items, Jewish themed toys, etc.).  If you are interested in having a table at the fair, please contact Dan Cardonick, Director of American Programs and he will put you in touch with the festival organizers.

Special thanks to our choreographer Sara Alter and Troupe Manager Jerri Blitzer (Hadassah's YJ Chair in Southern NJ), and to all of our generous donors who have enabled this program to continue.   The impact this program has on our high school Young Judaeans is amazing!  Some will go on to perform with college troupes at Brandeis, Cornell, Boston U. and Columbia.  More information available on our Facebook page.
