Alumni Love Story
Lori and Michael Railenu

Lorie and I met at CYJ California in the summer of 1979, she was 14, I was 15. I had been attending CYJ since the summer of 1973. In 1978 two of Lorie's older sisters (Liz and Rachael) came to camp and we had become friends. Lorie and Michelle, another sister who is four years younger, showed up as CYJ reloacted to Wonder Valley outside of Fresno.

I had a crush on her right away, she thought I was a dork. In time we became friends and pursued other camp relationships.  As the years progressed she and I had time to visit one another (she is from Southern California and I grew up in El Paso, TX). There were occasional flare-ups of a romance but the distances that seperated us made anything substantial impossible. Lorie did not go on Year Course but went on a different program in Israel. Nonetheless, she and I managed to see one another during that year and subsequently while she was attending college in New York City and I was in Austin we found ways to see each other. Throughout those years I continued to work for the movement and to work at CYJ Texas throughout the '80s.

Upon graduation from UT in 1988, I moved out to Los Angeles to attend graduate school. She had returned home after her graduation.  During my first year out in L.A. we went out once, had a fight and did not see each other much for the rest of the year.  During the intevening summer I was in Florida visiting my father and step-mother and I was lamenting my single status when it occured to me that there was someone out in L.A. who might be interested if I would just call. So, after working the High Holidays, I sent Lorie red roses for her birthday and eventually asked her for a formal date. We went to see The Bear (a dopey '80's movie) and had the time of our lives. We saw each other a few more time shortly thereafter and by Thanksgiving we were "exclusive."

Rena Scheingarten Safer -- As a member in Linden, NJ and a NJ Region officer, I attended TY in 1951 & '52, was on summer course in '53, and a TY madricha in '56.  My YJ training and experience stood me in good stead as I became the first president of the Student Zionist Organization at Boston University and the first female president of the BU Hillel.  This continued in later years when I was a region Hadassah president and region JNF co-president and today when I am the international president of Parents of North American Israelis.  I am married to a former Habonim leader (we call ours a mixed marriage), and both of our children, their spouses and our four grandchildren live in Israel, so we travel there frequently.  If anyone from the really old days wants to renew a friendship, I can be reached at renafred@sbcglobal.net.

Sharón Benheim (Glil Yam, YC '83-84, Kibbutz Ketura) -- I want to share a new video with you about the place I have been working for more than a decade.  I live on Ketura - in the famous "middle of nowhere" that is the Southern Arava in Israel.  But I have been blessed to work in an independent organization (NGO) that works to make the world a better place, to bring peace to the middle east and to preserve our wonderful environment for generations to come.

The Arava Institute for Environmental Studies is the premier environmental teaching and research program in the Middle East, preparing future Arab and Jewish leaders to cooperatively solve the region's environmental challenges. The Arava Institute was founded by Young Judaean, Alon Tal (Glil Yam - North Carolina) who is a professor at Ben Gurion University, a member of the new Green Movement Party, and founded many of the environmental organizations in Israel. He founded the Arava Institute as a member of Kibbutz Ketura. Currently another Young Judaean from Glil Yam - North Carolina is the director: David Lehrer. In addition several other Young Judaeans have worked in the administration and as lecturers for the Institute through out the years.  See the recent YOUTUBE video of the Arava Institute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxmoddhneAY.

-- Jared Friedmann (National Mazkirut '94-'95, YC '95-'96) and Rachel are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Hannah Rose on November 11, 2009.

And ... keep reading for a note and YJ memory from Brianna Friedmann, Jared's sister.

I just wanted to share the news that my brother Jared Friedmann and his wife Rachel welcomed their daughter Hannah Rose on Wednesday, November 11, 2009.  Jared began his journey as a Judean during the summer of '92 when he was a freshman in high school. He would spend every summer thereafter as a camper, a counselor, then a leader, where he was most famous for his "embellished" Shabbat stories and for his director skills on behalf of Parsha Players. During that year as a high school senior, he served on National Mazkeerut. In 1998 he was National Ofi Tsofi Programmer and that summer served as a guide on the Machon program. Impressed with his commitment to YJ, my brother David and I decided to follow, first at local Sunday afternoon YJ club meetings, then as Sprout Lake and Tel Yehuda summer campers.

I was lucky to have my big brother Jared as my counselor for a summer at Sprout Lake. I remember it well because I was always homesick! With all the things he had going on in camp, he still found the time to take me aside and give me some tough love about how I was silly for being homesick, I don't remember exactly what he said, but it always worked and I would go back to enjoying the independence and time with my friends.

This past summer Jared, Rachel and I attended the reunion at TY. Though little Hannah was still in the womb, Jared was showing her around, because there was no doubt in his mind that one day she will be back there as a camper following in his footsteps. I am looking forward to watching how Jared provides the same loving support to his daughter as he did to his little sister. She is one lucky little girl.
