Alumni Profile:  Dorrie Kahn (nee Zasler)

Dorrie Kahn (nee Zasler), Retired Teacher

Young Judaea Programs and Years: Oak Ridge, TN, Young Judaea club and leader 1951-1962; Camp Judaea 1956-1958; Camp Tel Yehudah 1959-61; Camp Judaea counselor 1962; Hadassah Camp Committee 1986-2002

Favorite memories from Young Judaea: One of my favorite memories of camp was realizing that there are Jews all over the world and I am meeting them! I also got an understanding of Judaism through actual experiences bigger than from my home and my small community in Tennessee.

How has your Young Judaea experience impacted your life today? Along with my marriage to a wonderful Jewish man, it made sure we brought up our children not only in a Jewish environment, also in a Young Judaean environment. They belonged to YJ clubs in New Orleans and attended YJ camps. Then they both married Jewish spouses and gave me 6 perfect grandchildren. My son, Michael Kahn, lives here and my daughter, Susie (Kahn) Enteen, made Aliyah 3 years ago. That is what one of the ultimate goals of Zionism!

Please describe your current professional involvement.  I am a retired teacher of special needs children. I taught school for almost 30 years.

Are you currently involved with Young Judaea or Hadassah?   I am currently the Organization Vice President of the Florida Broward Region. So the answer is yes.

Please describe how your YJ experience encouraged you to visit or have closer ties to Israel.  Since my daughter made Aliyah I have visited Israel many times and have always made a point to visit a project of Hadassah's.

Where are you living now? I am living in Davie, Florida (a suburb of Fort Lauderdale).

Have you returned to Israel since your YJ experience?  Before 2006, I had visited Israel twice with my husband and then twice with Hadassah (2001 National Convention; 2005 CEM dedication). Since 2006 I have visited 8 times mainly to see my children but I have made a point of visiting the Hadassah Hospital at Ein Kerem. In fact, my sixth grandchild was born there on March 3, 2009!

Please email Dorrie at dorkahn@aol.com.
Young Judaea Alumni Love Stories

Did you meet your partner through Young Judaea?  If so, we want to hear about itPlease email us your YJ love story.

Elaine Brukner Winer and Sanford Winer
We met in Young Judaea.  This is our love story.

Our "dating" began in the summer of 1963 when we were counselors at Camp Judaea in Hendersonville, N.C.  However, our "love story" began much earlier.  As a member of the Zionettes in Jacksonville, FL, I eagerly awaited becoming a senior Judaean and attending conventions.  As my birthday was a month too late for my first winter convention, I wrote to the President of the Southern Region, Sanford Winer, for special permission.  He replied that "a rule is a rule" and hopefully I would be a year older next year.  I saved the letter from the President in my scrapbook and did attend the next convention.  Alas, the 17 year old President did not notice my 13 year old existence.  Five years later we were counselors at Camp Judaea. We did notice each other, dated, and married in 1965.  Although I no longer had the correspondence from the President, Sanford had carbon copies of all his correspondence from his year as President.  There it was-the letter on official Southern Region stationary.

We have been married 43 years and live in Chattanooga, TN.  Sanford is a retired C.P.A. and I am a retired attorney.  Our daughter Barbara Winer Schenberg and her husband Scott Schenberg live in Tampa, FL. Our son Arthur Winer is married to Mallory McCreary and they live in Pasadena, CA.  We cherish our memories of Young Judaea, Camp Judaea, and Tel Yehudah.  We are thankful for the gift of love from Young Judaea.

                                                                      Elaine Winer

What a difference five years made in Elaine-from age 13 to age 18!!  At Camp Judaea, beginning the summer of 1963, I definitely noticed her.  Before the campers arrived we had our first date.  A group of us went into Hendersonville to play miniature golf.  She had a great "swing."  I spent most of the evening in an adjacent tennis court retrieving her golf ball.  That summer was wonderful and I knew I had met my "soul mate" and wanted to marry her.  Elaine returned to college at the University of Florida.  I had a two year commitment in the army.  I flew from Naha, Okinawa to Jacksonville, Florida (10,000 miles) to get engaged.  We married in December 1965 and have lived in Chattanooga since then.

I joined Young Judaea at age 13, went two summers (1956 and 1957) to Tel Yehudah, was President of the Southern Region, and was a counselor at Camp Judaea for two years.  These experiences were strong positive influences on all aspects of my life.  Since our marriage we have been members, founders, officers, and Presidents of many Jewish organizations in Chattanooga.  Of course the best all started with the "a rule is a rule" letter.

                                                                      Sanford Winer
Alumni Notes -- Where Are You Now?
Alumni enjoy hearing about and reconnecting with friends.  Tell the Young Judaea community where YOU are today.  Email alumni@youngjudaea.org.

Jay Katsir married to Adina Lemeshow, July 6 2009.  They met working for Camp Sprout Lake summer of 2000.  Jay is a graduate of Princeton University and an Emmy Award winning writer in NYC.  Adina is a PHD candidate at Columbia University in Public Health and holds degrees from Brandeis and Harvard Universities.  Both Jay and Adina attended YJ camps and Jay spent a year on Year Course in 1999.

Lisa Katsir graduated from American University Phi Beta Kappa in 2008 and is presently attending Hunter University in NYC studying sciences.  Lisa attendied YJ camps since 1994 and was a Year Course participant. Lisa is a life member of Hadassah.

Leonard Englander -- From out of the past, I am a YJ Alum.  I was at TY in 1951 and the summer in Israel in 1953.  Much to everybody's surprise, I did not carry a six-shooter.  TOL is 81 years old.  The 25th was celebrated in Waco, Tx in 1953, where YJ was started in 1928 by my uncle.   I joined YJ in 1949.  I traveled all around the US and to Israel as a member.  And now, I am retired from the paper recycling industry.  I have been married for 50 years and reside in Waco, Texas with my wife and grandchild.  I now volunteer as an elementary school tutor.

Ora Gelberg -- I attended Camp Hatzofeh in 1948.  The shaliach was Danny Brisker.  He would stand before a huge campfire and tell us the importance of aliya, going to kibbutz and not needing a college diploma.  I wonder if there are other Young Judaeans from that year - that is prior to Tel Yehudah.

I decided that I would study agriculture before making aliya, which I did for 2 years.  In college I joined the International Student Federation of America - IZFA.  I made aliya in 1950, going to Bet Hashita for hachshara, where we made a decision to join Kibbutz Yiftach.

At YJ reunions at Hadassah conventions I haven't found anyone from my year at Camp Hatzofeh and wonder where they are.

Life's Lessons, Not On A T-Shirt
Rafi Abrahams recently returned from Year Course and much to his surprise, learned life lessons such as cooking, cleaning and living on a budget.  Of course, he also taught English in Bat Yam, traveled and explored the country, hiked from the Mediteranean to the Galilee and much more.  Rafi writes that "if I were to try to capture Year Course in its entirety on a T-shirt, it would have to be at least an XXL."  Read the complete article here.
