Young Judaea Love Stories

Did you meet your partner through Young Judaea?  If so, we want to hear about it!  Please email us your YJ love story.

Annette Abraham Heller and Heshie (Harry) Heller
In 1951,  when I was a member of the Middle Village, Queens chapter of the Long Island Region, we had a Hanukkah party at Rabbi Friedman's shul in Jackson Heights.  Kvutza Sharon, a club from Brooklyn had been invited to attend.  One of the members, known as Heshie Heller, (now known as Harry) attended.  We fried latkes together, (I still remember the oil spattering on our arms) and sang and danced as we used to do.

Heshie went on to be Chalutziot Chairman of National.  He and many Young Judeans attended my Sweet Sixteen party.  My mother always remembered that he danced with another boy, (Larry Leifer) in the Israeli dancing that night.

Heshie and I became members of the Young Judaea Dance group that came in second at the Israeli Dance Festival.  Heshie remembers a rehearsal we were at that he was attracted by a pair of purple shorts I was wearing.  He really took notice of me then.  We started dating when we went to CCNY and became active in SZO (Student Zionist Organization) and Hillel.  We fell in love buying Falafel for an Israel Independence Day Cabaret we were running.

We were both counselors at Tel Yehudah in 1956 and one Shabbat dressed in our whites, under a certain tree, Heshie got down on one knee and proposed.

We married in 1957.  After apartment dwelling, we lived in Port Washington, NY for 35 years and then moved to our country home in East Hampton, NY  where we now reside.  We have a daughter and a son and 5 grandchildren.  We feel blessed and grateful.

Young Judaea Programs: CJ 1987-1989, 1992; TY 1993; Machon in Israel 1994; CJ Staff 1997 & 1999

Favorite Memories from Young Judaea:
I enjoyed the friendships developed at CJ and at conventions.  A favorite memory of mine is being a staff member at CJ - Ari Mex and I were co-counselors for Ofarim and and we named our cabin "the Castle" and each of the campers was a "Knight".  The session went really well and the campers, despite all their efforts to avoid showering and brushing their teeth (offies try hard), seemed to have a great first experience with CJ and YJ.

Another memory would involve Machon in Israel and having Yaron, the rosh merakez for our group, read to us chapters from The Little Prince.  He promised we could read it every 10 years and see things we couldn't have understood before.

How has your Young Judaea experience impacted your life today?  I am much more knowledgeable about Israel and Zionism due to YJ.

Please describe your current professional involvement.  A few years ago, I joined my father and cousin in a small business started by a family member in the 1970s.  We manufacture margarita and daiquiri mixes mainly for the restaurant and bar market although we recently launched a website to begin selling direct to consumers - the site is www.maysons.com.  The bottling plant, though small, has even served as a summer employment stop for a few former CJ'ers (the building smells like margarita - its quite an experience).

Are you currently involved with Young Judaea or Hadassah?  I am not involved currently with either YJ or Hadassah although I enjoy attending the local YJ reunions thrown by the Atlanta office (a shoutout to the staff in the ATL!).

Did your Young Judaea experience encourage you to visit or have closer ties to Israel?  Yes, although this was truer in the past when I was involved with YJ.  It might be interesting if there were YJ Alum trips to Israel.

Have you returned to Israel since your YJ experience?  During college, I spent a few months in Israel at a Yeshiva but I haven't been back to Israel for a number of years.

35 Year Reunion!  Year Course 1972-'73
By Deborah Rothenberg

August 24, 2008, Franklin Lakes, N.J. was the venue for the 1972 - '73 Year Course Mini Reunion.  We met at the home of Steve and Sue Levin, a beautiful, serene setting, perfect for the coming together of more than 30 Young Judeans, many of whom had not seen one another in over 35 years!  The atmosphere was electric!  The joy and excitement palpable.  Even after almost a lifetime apart, the bonds remained.  We laughed, reminisced and chatted for hours.  It was hard to leave but we felt comforted with the notion that we would reunite again soon, only this time, it would be in Israel, where it all began.

Year Course Chanichim Meet Alumni in Holon!
I am currently on Year Course and living in Holon for Community Volunteering.

On Wednesday night a group of us were headed into Tel Aviv for a fundraiser at a club.  We took the 129 bus from Holon and got off at the stop right across for Rabin Square. There was about ten of us and we were having a conversation in English about something to do with Year Course.  As we cross the intersection one of the two guys behind us asks, "Are you guys on Year Course?" We all turned around and said, "Yeah. How do you know about Year Course?" The guys responded, "We were on Year Course eleven years ago!" It was an instantanious bond.

Seeing two guys now living in Israel ten years after they completed the program makes me realize how special this program is.  We took a picture with them, but managed not to catch their names.

The people in the picture are as follows (from right to left):  Lisa Teitelbaum, Aubrielle Matlin, the two alumni from Year Course eleven years ago, Jonathan Green, Daniel Siegel and Jackie Kanzen.
