YJ's alumni newsletter
Dear Alumni,

The past months have been filled with news and accomplishments for the entire YJ family.  From Israel programs to YJ camps, regions, and clubs, the movement is experiencing a wonderful period of growth and expansion.

We're particularly excited to announce the upcoming launch of the new Young Judaea Web site, which will include interactive tools for alumni to connect and communicate.  This online community will feature a secure online alumni directory, bulletin and discussion boards, photo galleries, a calendar of local and national activities, as well as tools for online donations and event registration.

It's our hope that this set of online community tools, scheduled to launch over the summer, will provide a central address for alumni interaction and communication.

You can help us make this online community a success by updating your program and contact information on the online registration form.  Please be sure to check the relevant box indicating whether you give us permission to share your email address and/or phone number with other alumni who wish to contact you.

As you may know, Young Judaea Israel moved its headquarters from the memorable Beit Riklis, where we resided for over four decades, to the state-of-the-art Beit Ar-El Center for Young Judaea at the Judaean Youth Hostel, Jerusalem.

You are invited to help us celebrate the place where a whole new generation of memories will be formed.  Join us for a special reception & dinner for Young Judaea alumni - Thursday, June 14th, at 7:00 p.m.  Click here for additional information about this event.

We hope you enjoy reading the following pages of exciting news from the movement, and we look forward to continue to strengthen the bond shared by our ever-growing alumni community, both in Israel and the Diaspora.

While we all move on in our lives, we always remember the strengths, love, and friendships that we gained from our Young Judaea experiences.  Let's stay connected!

B'Shalom,

YJ Alumnus Saves Fellow Soldiers' Lives During Lebanon War

A Letter from Roger & Alyssa Friedland

As a Judaean family who made Aliyah in 1995 with four small children, we are so proud of our 22 year old son Steven Friedland for the work he did in the second Lebanon War this past summer as a paramedic.

Steven went to Tel Yehudah for three summers even though we lived in Israel, to share his Israel experiences with his peers. Although already in the army when his Year Course friends came to Israel, he continued the special connection and friendships that he forged with them while they were here.

Below is a link to an article about his experiences in the war and the guardian angel who saved his life so that he could go on to save others during two days of terror and casualties. We are so proud of Steven and all the soldiers who serve our country and pray that they will never have to endure a nightmare like this one ever again.

Help Save the Life of a Former Shaliach

This is a joint letter from Abe Silver, Lonny Baskin, and Daniel Ginensky, all YJ alumni.  We are writing to you about Asaf Carmi, who was a Young Judaea shaliach in the 1970's and was recently diagnosed with a form of cancer for which treatment is not covered by Israeli national health insurance.

Asaf was the shaliach in Long Island (Nassau-Suffolk) Young Judaea from 1973-75 and was a Merakez both at Camp Young Judaea in Texas and at Tel Yehudah.  This was an especially difficult time for Israel and for American Jews.  The Yom Kippur War broke out and this period was traumatic for Asaf, who wanted to take his place among his army comrades. He knew that he was serving a vital role strengthening the life line between Israel and the Diaspora. He stayed with us when his heart was calling him to protect his home. He fulfilled his duty with an abundance of dedication to Israel and the Jewish people.

Asaf has been fighting cancer for 3 years, which he has faced with bravery befitting a former paratrooper. He is currently paying $7,000 a month for the treatments that are keeping him alive.

This is an opportunity to give back to someone who has given so much to us all.

Click here for more information on ways to help Asaf.

Asaf Carmi can be contacted at: aharoni1@netvision.net.il

Leading Up North

During the recent winter break, some 500 young adults participated in a program called Leading Up North. Participants traveled to Israel's north, where they spent 10 days volunteering in various projects centered around repairing damage done during last summer's war with Hezbollah.  They responded to the current needs of northern Israel by painting bomb shelters, clearing rocket-damaged forests, and planting new trees.

O
ver 30 alumni of Year Course and other YJ programs were among the participants.

Year Course Offers New Program Tracks
YC 05-06
Celebrating its 50th Anniversary,
Year Course launches four new components to its program: Olami and Olami 2, introducing participants to a variety of countries during the year through a Zionist lens; Shevet, designed for students seeking to explore meaningful religious and spiritual experiences; and YCAP, Year Course Athletic Program, designed for those who are athletic, enjoy sports, and are fitness enthusiasts.

OLAMI

Israel has been shaped by the dreams of millions of Jewish immigrants from communities around the globe. Now, Young Judaea's award-winning Year Course offers participants the unique opportunity to retrace those steps.

Year Course Olami will introduce students to five countries over the course of the year - countries from Eastern Europe to Africa, where Jews risked everything to leave their homes and start a new life in Israel. During the course of their academic year in Israel, students will alternate their travels with Year Course's core components of classroom study, touring Israel and volunteering. Olami is open to all Year Course participants, but is limited to the first 80 who apply.

Though the main focus of all Year Course programs remains Israel, Olami aims to trace the path of Zionist history through the study of key events and communities outside of Israel. The program year starts in France with a week-long study of the French Revolution, the Dreyfus affair and its effect on Theodor Herzl, the father of modern Zionism. Other off-shore study venues include: England, Budapest/Prague/Krakow, Morocco, and Ethiopia. Prior to each trip, participants will spend a Shabbaton in preparatory study.

Year Course and the new Olami program are Shomer Shabbat and observe the laws of kashrut. Students receive college credit for Year Course from the
University of Judaism, and pending approval, will receive additional credit for Olami.

Click here for FAQ about Olami.
Click here for Olami's educational rationale.

OLAMI 2

Join Olami 2 and visit four extraordinary "Lost Jewish Communities" by traveling to Portugal, Uganda, India and South Africa.  Visit with local Jewish communities, tour well known points of interest and have a life changing adventure.  Explore the physical, cultural and spiritual survival of a variety of small communities who lived for many centuries in secrecy and isolation.

Click here for FAQ about Olami 2.

SHEVET (tribe)

Another innovative Year Course track, is designed for students who are seeking additional Jewish enrichment and activities from a modern Orthodox perspective.

Shevet provides a comfortable atmosphere for participants to explore their Jewish belief & observance through dynamic classes & experiential opportunities.

Shevet functions like the other YC sections, which include the three traditional components: Jerusalem Studies, Israeli Experience and Community Volunteering. Shevet participants are offered specialized classes, opportunities to observe Shabbat in various settings across Israel, and t'fillot (prayer) options at the Kotel.

Click here for FAQ about Shevet.

YEAR COURSE ATHLETIC PROGRAM

This track is geared toward students who are athletic, enjoy sports and are fitness enthusiasts. YCAP will focus on three themes: Exercise, Competition and Leadership, and is open to the first 30 North American applicants.

YCAP will begin with the Israeli Experience component (from September through November) at the Agricultural School of Pardes Hannah. The day will begin with jogging/calisthenics, weight training, swimming, yoga and/or krav maga (Israeli self-defense). The afternoon will consist of a variety of competitive sports in addition to classes where participants will be taught coaching, training and related skills.

During the Community Volunteering component (from December through February) YCAP participants will live in either Holon or Bat Yam (15 minutes from Tel Aviv), and will have priority in all sports-related volunteer placements. There will also be some physical training and enrichment activities.

The Jerusalem Studies component (from March through May) will offer the standard academic and informal educational opportunities at the state-of-the-art Judaean Youth Hostel. This facility includes swimming pool, basketball courts, soccer field, gym with a weight room, and more.

All students may earn up to a year's worth of college credit through the
University of Judaism. YCAP participants will engage in physical training and enrichment activities as well.

Volunteering Program for Students
this Summer in Israel

Haven't had enough of the Holy Land? Want to go back for a fun, meaningful, independent experience?

Look no further!

Hamagshimim is proud to present two of the finest Israel programs out there for college students and young adults: Amirim and the WUJS Institute in Arad (please see next article for WUJS-related news and information).

Amirim is a 4 or 6 week summer program in Holon or Bat Yam, both suburbs of cosmopolitan Tel Aviv. You will contribute to the country and its people by volunteering in a meaningful organization in Tel Aviv, enjoy cultural activities and trips, and have plenty of time to do your own personal exploration.  Relaxing on the beach is also encouraged! For more information on Amirim and to see a list of organizations where participants have volunteered, please call us at 1-877-GO-HAMAG, or email us at

Mesamnei Shvilim - Trailblazing in Israel

Hamagshimim's winter leadership mission tour to Israel, Mesamnei Shvilim ("Trailblazers"), took place December 18th to the 28th.

Twenty two dedicated and committed Zionists, leaders of the Hamagshimim campus-based Israel Fellowship Program and of the YJ regions, led by the Hamagshimim staff, participated in this year's mission that explored the notion of borders, both physical and spiritual.

Touring Israel from north to south, participants examined and inspected Israeli political, cultural and moral borders: understanding the underlying need for their presence and venturing to look and think beyond them.

Meeting high-profile speakers throughout the tour, participants looked deeply into the pressing matters Israel is facing and the efforts being made to resolve them.

Participants were also challenged to creatively present their own personal perspectives on the notion of borders.

Hamagshimim Fellowship Retreat

Meymuna
On April 14-16 2007, Hamagshimim held its annual
International Hamagshimim Fellowship Retreat in NYC. British university students of FZY (Federation of Zionist Youth), as well as Israelis and members of the Tzofim, joined current and prospective fellows from North America on a very rich program that fortified participants' love and inspiration of Israel and Israeli culture.

The group focused on issues such as bringing the positive and stimulating aspects of Israel into the campus setting, as well as extending and deepening the dialogue on Israel beyond the conflict on the one hand and beyond the hummus on the other.

The program included meetings with Harel Skaat, chosen as Israel's best male performer for 2006-2007, Etgar Keret - one of Israel's leading young writers, and Sharon Eylon Shahar who is the human rights officer at the Israeli Delegation to the UN. In addition, participants also visited the UN, as well as enjoyed "BE by Mayumana" - a purely theatrical event, originated in Israel that combines elements from various art disciplines based on music, movement, acting, dance and rhythm, currently on Off Broadway.

Celebrity Journalist Gives Up Promising Job at Popular Magazine to Explore Israel with WUJS

"I was already an atypical tourist in the country. I had decided to give up a promising celebrity journalism job to spend a year exploring a foreign country where I felt connected, but not completely comfortable."

"I came upon the WUJS Institute in Arad. What interested me in the program? Aside from the ability to learn Hebrew intensively, be among a group of blossoming college graduates in their twenties and explore Israel, it was within a small, intimate city that was different from all the others," says Simona Kogan in an article on Jvibe. Click here to read more about Simona's experience)

Simona is among the dozens of WUJS graduates who successfully concluded their session on March 26th.

Medura

Sheila Chalegua is another recent WUJS graduate.  She described her experience on the program in a JTA article:

"On the second semester I relocated to Tel Aviv. WUJS set me up with a dorm room in Ramat Aviv with a friend from the program. I worked in Jerusalem at my request.  It was a great way for me to learn the ropes of the real working world in the country.  It also allowed me to make amazing connections and meet people outside the group."

"For me WUJS was exactly what I was looking for...It gave me insight to the issues in Israel that you don't hear about on the news, a foundation in Hebrew, and the contacts I needed."

You can join us too!

The WUJS Institute in Arad is a 5-month program during which you will be immersed in Israeli culture and life. Join a community of 21-35 year old Jewish college grads from around the world as you study Hebrew intensely in one of Israel's strongest ulpans, take classes from experts in Judaism and Israeli politics, culture, and society, and travel around the country on fascinating weekly in-depth study seminars.

The Land, Language and Society program will quench your thirst for intensive cultural learning.  Are you an artist? We have a special program just for you. Interested in Peace and Social Justice, and want to intern in an organization working for social change? We can help you with that too. Our April session just started.  The next session begins in October 2007, and there are still spaces available.

For more information, visit our website at www.wujs-arad.org, or contact Susan Pultman, National Coordinator, at 888-WUJS-INS or wujsarad@hamagshimim.org.

Camp Tel Yehudah Gears Up for Major Renovations

Tel Yehudah continues to empower our campers to inspire change within their communities in the realms of Judaism, Zionism, pluralism and social action while having a memorable and fun experience.

The Master Plan for TY is ready and exciting! Two years ago a group of dedicated TY alumni, staff and parents formed a committee called "Friends of TY". This group came together with a mission to help ensure that TY continues to provide the invaluable lifetime experiences that are so important for us and our children. The committee met with campers, staff, parents and alumni to better understand the needs of Tel Yehudah in the present and the future. We hired one of the most acclaimed architect planning firms specializing in camp development to work closely with us on a master plan for upgrading Tel Yehudah's facilities.

After a long process we are excited to announce the completion of the Master Plan. We are now ready to move ahead and launch our Capital Campaign.

The plan was created in order to renovate many of the buildings that are in much need of updating to operate in the 21st century. The plan is divided into phases. The first phase includes the renovation of the girls' and boys' cabins and development of a new Aquatics Center that will include a Junior Olympic lap pool, a zero-entry play area, slides, climbing walls and deep water activities. We are planning to build a new Chadar Ochel in the middle of both Aleph and Bet that will service both camps. In addition, a new Performing Arts Center, Media Arts Center, Administration Center and Staff Housing are in the plans.

This is your chance to make an impact on the place that influenced you or your children! For more information on the capital campaign or if you are interested in joining the Friends of TY committee please contact
Meir Housman, camp TY director, or Jennifer Sylvor, Chair of the Friends of TY.

TY Cabin

Help Recruit Campers & Win Prizes

Close your eyes for a second and take yourself back to your summer at Tel Yehudah. Think about sitting with your friends under the TY apple trees. Think back to participating in Peulot and debating issues. Do you remember your hatzagah, T'fillot, your cabin? Think of cheering with your friends in the Chadar Ochel. Hopefully all of these thoughts conjure up images of a great time at Tel Yehudah and an experience that you would like to pass on to generations to come.

Summer is right around the corner and we are looking for your help. You can enable campers to have the same great experiences at Tel Yehudah that you had. Almost all of our new campers hear about us through word of mouth. Parents of current campers and alumni help us to identify and recruit new campers. Aleph and Bet are both near capacity during the first session and Aleph is near capacity for the second session. We would however like to see these numbers grow even more, and inspire as many chanichim as we can.

We want to recognize and reward the hard work of the people who are helping to spread the word about Tel Yehudah. We are offering a rewards program for alumni, parents, or current campers who help us to recruit new campers. Click here for more information and details about this exciting new offer.

We hope that this program helps to reward people who are already recruiting and reminds the rest of you to keep mentioning TY to friends and family who are looking for an excellent summer program for their teens.

Merkaz Hamagshimim Helps Raise Awareness against Sex Trafficking in Israel

Stand Up for Those Who Are Forced to Lie Down

The Center for Social Activism, which works within Merkaz Hamagshimim Hadassah, creates a framework suitable for Olim and potential Olim who are interested in a variety of educational and enriching programs. The center strives to create a social awareness among Olim and tourists, making them feel part of Israeli society. In creating this awareness of the social needs in Israeli society, the center supports those who cannot fight for themselves.

One of the leading projects at the Center is a campaign to raise awareness of sex trafficking in Israel. Sex trafficking is a terrible phenomenon affecting an estimated 3,000 women who are smuggled into Israel each year for the sole purpose of being sex slaves.

Last year, The Center for Social Activism held informational evenings, tours of the brothel area in southern Tel Aviv and organized a demonstration of about 200 people from across the country in front of one of the brothels. Zehava Galon, Knesset member and the Chairperson of the Parliamentary Inquiry Committee on the Trafficking of Women was the main speaker in the demonstration and personally invited the group of activists from the Merkaz, to participate in the Inquiry committee.

This year, the Center will focus on creating informational materials to raise awareness among potential customers on the consequences of their actions. The project is solely funded  by the profits from the recently opened second hand store at the Merkaz.

For more information about Merkaz Hamagshimim Hadassah and its programs, please contact info@themerkaz.org
