Joseph Lonewolf: Excellence in the Arts ~ Pottery

New Mexico's highest artistic honor is the Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, given each September to a select few for their contributions to culture in the state. Eight artists and art supporters will receive the honor this year.

Joseph Lonewolf of Santa Clara Pueblo has been chosen to receive the award for pottery.

Joseph Lonewolf is widely credited with advancing the art of modern pottery beyond the boundaries of tradition, and in so doing, bringing worldwide recognition to New Mexico. Joseph's delicate sgraffito and bas relief have never been equaled in Native American pottery. He was the first to use natural clay slips in rainbow colors.
