Greetings!
Welcome to summer 2011! And wow what a summer it is. More than 20 days over 100 degrees already, and July is just starting. Hopefully, you've all been following our advice and your garden is ready. Long, deep waterings have developed a nice root system. Liquid seaweed has made your plants strong and vigorous. Compost Tea and Molasses have made the yard ready for anything Mother Nature can throw at it. And hey, winter is only 168 days away!
This month, we'll give you some Do's and Don'ts for a successful butterfly garden. We'll also give you tips on keeping the garden and plants looking good while you go on vacation. Finally, we'll address all the creepy crawlies trying to get into your home during this drought. Good luck, fearless gardeners, stay cool!

Butterfly Garden Do's and Don'ts
Everyone loves butterflies and the color they can bring to the garden. They are one of the few beautiful things that actually likes this crazy summer heat. Creating a butterfly garden isn't terribly difficult, but there are a few things you may never have thought of.
Kelly and I have teamed up to bring you a list of Butterfly Garden Do's and Don'ts. Click here to see our article!' |

Vacation Time!!!
Summer is the season for a vacation. Especially if it means getting away from the Austin heat. Unfortunately, we can't bring our garden or plants along with us. They have to stay here and endure the weather. Here are some tips so that you can come home to a nice yard and garden, not scorched earth. Click here to see the article. |

Drought and Insects
With the current drought, insects are looking anywhere they can to find moisture. Unfortunately, this often leads them to our homes. Fortunately, there are lots of ways we can create "barriers" around our homes, naturally, to keep bugs away. Click here to see our article on natural ways to keep insects out of your home. |

A Great Summer Read (especially for this
summer)
This is a great new publication from our friends at the Master Gardeners Association. They're the people that brought us the Garden Guide for Austin and Vicinity, one of our favorite books here at TGO.
This new book is all about creating landscapes that require little to no water, once established. Like the Garden Guide, it was written by Austinites, for Austinites, so you know all the info inside will be good for our area. Plus, monies stay here in Austin and help support TCMGA.
So, work in the garden early, then spend the hottest part of the day thumbing through this great read. |
Save that Summer Dough!
The always popular Plant of the Month for July is Porulaca! 4" pots, normally $1.39 will be only $.89 all month long. Plant of the week will be on vacation for the summer, as it is difficult to reliably get the material in the summer months. Look for it's return in September |

July looks to be a scorcher, but we'll have plenty of plants that can stand up to the intense heat. Be sure to take it easy out there. Try to get harder work done early and spend the middle of the day working in shade on lighter projects. As always, TGO is here for you. If there is any subject you would like to see an article about, drop us a line. Got questions? We've got the answers! Stop by, call, or e-mail us for assistance.
