Dear (Contact First Name), Merrideth

Spring hit early this year, but seems to have flown by.  Fortunately, I hear that we are supposed to get rain in May, so fingers crossed.  As I write this, we have a 50% chance of showers in the next 4-5 hours.

This month is still full of activities at the Garden Center.  We will continue the tradition of Albert & Gage for Mother's Day on Sunday the 8th.  Our College of Garden Knowledge continues in May with some new and fun subjects, so don't forget to stop by on Saturday mornings.

We are having a Sharpening party on Saturday the 14th, so bring out all your tools for a fresh edge!   And you can use those newly sharpened tools to do a little deadheading of your flowers, which we will discuss below.

Good luck, fearless gardeners, and Happy Spring!

Mother's Day Traditions

albert gage

What to do with mom on Mother's Day (which is Sunday, May 8th by the way)?  Well mom LOVES to visit the Garden Center and look for plants!

We'll have plenty of fun, beautiful plants you could get her.  We'll also have free live music from 2-4 with Albert and Gage.  They've played here on Mother's Day for as long as i can remember.  Get here early for a good seat (you may want to bring your own!).  More info here

Bugs in the Garden

aphids
With the onset of warmer weather comes the start of harvest time in the veggie garden.  Unfortunately, we are not the only ones that love fresh veggies.  Pests will start to appear as well.
Jill LaVigne, one of our resident Veggie Gurus, has written a great article about the bugs she is seeing in her garden and how she deals with them.  Click here to see the article and learn more.

Deadheading your Flowering Plants

Despite how it may sound, Deadheading is NOT loading all your plants in a 1968 Volkswagon Microbus and driving to California.  Deadheading is removing spent flowers and seed pods from your plants.

We deadhead plants for three main reasons. #1- To encourage more blooms, #2- To improve appearance and health, and #3- To avoid overseeding some "rampant" varieties.

One key to working safely and efficiently in the garden is to have good, sharp tools.  But sharpening your own tools can be confusing and tricky.  So we've got the answer.

Saturday, May 14th from 2pm-5pm the guys from Knife Party will be at The Great Outdoors to sharpen your pruners, shovels, scissors, or any other sharp items, even your knives!!!

Really nice, local guys with GREAT reviews of their work.  Click Here to see.
