Greetings!
2011 has already started great and February is already here! While it may not seem like the best month for gardening, February is a time to start preparing so that you have a successful spring. Below are just a few tips to get you going. First, we'll look at seed starting. It is time for tomato and peppers in early February. Eggplant and other warm weather lovers are not far behind. Next is a quick reminder on soil prep for spring beds. Then another reminder that February is one of the times of year for Corn Gluten application. Finally, February is the time to work on those roses. Pruning, planting, and fertilizing all start in mid-February. We are in the process of finalizing our "Great Outdoors College of Garden Knowledge" program. These fun and informal lectures will take place at 11 am on Saturdays here at the nursery. I wish we had the full schedule now, but we are still tweaking to make it the best. Keep an eye out on our website for updates.
We hope you have a great February, full of fun and adventure!

Soil Prep
Ready to put in that bed or garden you've been thinking about for a while now? Well February is a great time get a start by preparing the soil. The cooler temps of the month make the labor of digging and soil turning much easier. We've had some rain, so the soil should be in great condition for working. Great Outdoors has a selection of composts, soils, and other amendments for creating fertile, fabulous ground. Not sure where to start? Our Passionate Plant Professionals are always on hand to give you the best and latest info on where to begin. See the coupon at the bottom of the page to save some money on your project!

Corn Gluten
Corn Gluten is one of the best natural ways to reduce/prevent weeds in the yard and garden. Typically, we recommend two applications a year. February is the time to apply for control of summer weeds, dandelions, sticker burs, purslane, and others. There is also a September application to control many of the early spring weeds you may see in March-April. Corn Gluten, I have to admit, isn't always 100%. It works by restricting root growth on small seedling plants. If we get lots of rain or you water often, small seedlings may still survive. My experience is that it definitely reduces the number of weeds and make maintenance much easier. Also remember not to use corn gluten if you intend to spread seeds for flowers or veggies in the area, as it will affect the root growth on any type of plant.

Roses
February is Valentine's month, and nothing says love like a rose. In the garden world, we use Valentine's Day as a great reminder to work on our roses. If you need to trim or cut back your roses, now is the time. It's also a great time to plant new roses in the ground. Finally, it is when we start to fertilize our rose bushes for best growth and blooming.
