Greetings!
Wow! November already. Ever since I took over the monthly newsletter, it seems time flies by (getting older doesn't help either, I'm sure). Fall is definitely upon us and I had to break out the long pants and jacket this morning. And boy, that dip in Barton Springs this morning was more than a little "refreshing". All in all though, not too bad of a summer.
We are well stocked with fall/winter color now. Cyclamen for shade and pansies, snaps, and others for sun are in good supply. Come on buy to grab some color to spruce up your pots or beds.
Speaking of spruce, Christmas isn't far away and our fresh cut Christmas Trees (actually Fraser Firs) will arrive soon. Not only do we have the best trees in town, we need to make room for them! We have gone through the nursery and marked selected plants down 25%, 40%, and even 50% just to make some space. There are some real gems to be had.
As the leaves fall, visions of compost start dancing in my head. Read below to learn how to make your own compost pile at home. What to do with that compost? Use it to plant a tree! A quicky tree planting demo is also included. And finally, I have listed a few sometimes forgotten chores that would be great to complete in November.
October was a great month at TGO and we know November will be too. Thanks for reading.

Tree Planting There is still plenty of time this fall for planting trees. The weather outlook is for a moderately warm and dry winter, which is generally great for tree establishment. We have a good selection of native or adapted trees for Austin and we can try to special order a tree to fit your exact needs. We will also have our fruit trees arriving the middle of November. Peaches, pears, plums, persimmons, figs, and apples will be coming in, all varieties recommended by Texas A&M and the extension service. Want to learn how to plant a tree? Click here.

Fresh Cut Christmas Trees I know it seems early to be thinking about your Christmas Tree, but the holidays are just around the corner. Our award winning selection of trees will be arriving just before Thanksgiving and will be ready to sell the Friday after, November the 26th. We should have plenty of trees to fill everyone's needs, but we do only get a limited number of larger trees. Once they're gone, that's it. So come down early for the best selection.

November Chores in the Garden November is still a great time for planting, but for those among us with established gardens, there may seem to be little to do in the garden this month. Here are a few things to remember for November! Winter is a great time to put out food for the birds. Ample supplies are available to them spring through early fall, but as winter arrives, food can get a bit more scarce. Add a bird feeder to the garden to keep some great "colors" in the winter. Speaking of birds, it looks like it may be a bit dry this winter. Be sure to keep your birdbath filled so our feathered friends can grab a drink. Fall is also a good time to give that bird bath a good scrub down, removing grime and algae that may have accumulated in summer. Just be sure not to use any harsh chemicals. Vinegar has worked well for me. Also, after the trees drop their leaves, it is good to clean out your fountains and other water features. Rotting leaves can cause a spike in the acidity of the water and can be detrimental to fish and even stain some stone or concrete pieces. If you've never done it (or it's been a while) core aerate your lawn and top dress with a top dress mix. It will bring new life to the lawn next spring. And finally, November is a great time to refresh mulch in your beds, especially if you have lots of tender perennials. A new layer of 1"-2" of fresh mulch, over the older stuff, will make the beds look fresh and protect tender roots from a freeze.
