Side-by-side shows of book arts books that are meant to be picked up, examined, and readSitting Room, a traveling show from England, is an international exhibition of 110 books by European artists, curated by Tom Sowden and Lucy May Schofield.  Sit Down and Read, a juried show, was curated by Kathy Walkup, Director of Mills College Book Arts Program; Patricia Wakida of Wasabi Press; and Lucy Childs of Another Room Book Arts Bookstore.  About 150 books in all.

Comfortable seating in the K Gallery for prolonged reading will be provided.

Sat., April 12, 2 pm
Peter Koch will give a brief talk about "The Book as a Work of Art," from a curatorial perspective, with examples.  Koch, of Peter Koch, Printers, is one of the founders the CODEX Foundation and the theme of CODEX Symposium 2009 is "Considering the Book as a Work of Art."

The K Gallery adjoins Another Room Book Arts Bookstore at Rhythmix Cultural Works. Gallery hours:
  • Saturdays 10 am - 5 pm
  • Sundays 10 am - 4 pm

Another Room Book Arts Bookstore will be closed (all-day Taiko drumming rehearsal in the theater upstairs).

Sat., April 26, 1:30 pm
Join 'AHAmele in the K Gallery. A 12-member ensemble specializing in hula and featuring ukulele.  17 members will finish with the set prepared for Ukulele Festival in Hayward, April 27, 2008.  A keiki (a 7-year-old) will dance hulas.

'AHAmele is a performing music ensemble from AHA, the Academy of Hawaiian Arts in Oakland.  The ukulele is featured along with a blending of vocal harmonies. 

'AHAmele's performance will celebrate the memory of Michael Mallery on the anniverary of his passing away, as well as acknowlege thanks from Another Room to Rhythmix Cultural Works as the bookstore prepares to move to a new location.  Negotiations are underway with a more central location in Berkeley.  The new location will be announced in May in the Another Room Newsletter.

Michael Mallery, graphic designer, was one of the core four people (with John Gullak, Fast Forward, and Lucy Childs) who published the art and music magazine, Another Room Magazine, in the late 70s and early 80s.  He is very much missed.

Another Room closes its location at Rhythmix Cultural Works on Sunday, April 27, 2008, and will reopen in its new location, to be announced in the May edition of the Another Room Newsletter.  Another Room will reopen in June 2008.

Open House for K-12 Teachers
Saturday, Apr 12, 10am-1pm
Pick up some book making ideas at this free event. It's your chance to explore our facilities, learn about youth programs such as field trips and classroom visits, and make some books that you can easily teach your students to make. We'll have materials on hand for a variety of book projects, and instructors will be demonstrating construction.

May-August classes are now available for registration.

Betsy Davids will give a presentation.   Betsy Davids, one of the most notable people in book arts, and one of the most knowledgeable, has had a distinguished career in the book arts as a writer, professor, and publisher.
