Side-by-side shows of book arts books that are meant to be handled and readSitting Room, a traveling show from England, is an international exhibition of 110 books by European artists, curated by Tom Sowden and Lucy May Schofield.  Sit Down and Read, a juried show, was curated by Kathy Walkup, Director of Mills College Book Arts Program; Patricia Wakida of Wasabi Press; and Lucy Childs of Another Room Book Arts Bookstore.

Comfortable seating in the K Gallery for prolonged reading will be provided.

Peter Koch presents "The Book as a Work of Art." Koch, of Peter Koch, Printers, is one of the founders the CODEX Foundation and the theme of CODEX Symposium 2009 is Considering the Book as a Work of Art.

Featured Artist Shows
Through March 2008

Another Room is featuring the work of Rhiannon Alpers.  A recent transplant to the Bay Area in 2007, has an MFA in book arts from Columbia College Chicago, and a BA in book arts from University of
California, Santa Barbara College of Creative Studies.  She is a papermaker, letterpress printer and a book artist.  She also coordinates the Book Users Group meetings for the San Francisco Center for the Book.

Alpers has taught workshops for the Center for Book and Paper in Chicago; Santa Reparata in Florence, Italy; Kala Art Institute in Berkeley; and the San Francisco Center for the Book. She has apprenticed at Larksparrow Press in Evanston Illinois and at Turkey Press, in Berkeley. Since moving to the Bay Area, Alpers has participated in the following shows: Mutanabbi Street: an Exhibition of Broadsides; The Calendar, PCBA Member Show; The Hand Bookbinders of California 29th Annual Members Show.

Also featured is work by book artists new to the store, such as Paul Johnson, Peter and Donna Thomas, Indulgence Press, Cari Ferraro, Alice Simpson, and more from Granary Books.

BUG Calendar
The Bookarts Users Group (BUG) meets on the first Tuesday of each month.

Hand Bookbinders of California & Pop-Up books

Joint meeting of Bookarts Users Group and Hand Bookbinders of California. Joanne Page, distinguished bookbinder, conservator, collector and longtime HBC member, will exhibit examples of her extensive collection of Pop-Up Books.  She will talk about the books on display, and will tell us her thoughts on the past, present and future of Pop-Ups. Board meeting at 6:00, at which all are welcome.

Macy Chadwick Book Arts Critique

Bring your current book arts projects to be critiqued by Macy Chadwick. Get tips on design, materials, or technique.  Participants having their work critiqued is limited to 10. Sign-in sheet will determine the first 10. This meeting welcomes those who only want to observe.
