Alumni celebrate Homecoming 2012
Nearly 400 attend tent festivities. Doug Brown '70 (NDHS) honored.
On Friday, September 28, nearly 400 alumni and guests from Notre Dame High School, Notre Dame Prep and Pontiac Catholic attended the 2012 homecoming celebration. All watched as special guest alumnus and three-time Olympian, Doug Brown '70 (NDHS), was honored on the field.
Brown wore his decorated NDHS letter sweater to the varsity football game, and he presented it to Fr. Leon Olszamowski, s.m. '65 (NDHS), president of Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy, for permanent display on the campus. Earlier that day, Brown participated in the student pep rally, telling Coach Zimmerman and the varsity football players that he didn't come all the way from Atlanta, Ga., to see ND Prep lose its undefeated winning streak. His pep talk must have inspired, as ND Prep beat Dearborn Divine Child 29 to 7 that night.
Special thanks to Frank Coppola '73 (NDHS), Victoria Sidor '01 (NDP) and the Notre Dame Alumni Association Board of Directors for their efforts in planning a successful alumni tent celebration. To view photos and video from Homecoming, visit our Facebook page.

St. Frederick and St. Michael schools celebrate all-class reunions
More than 300 graduates of former Pontiac schools, St. Frederick and St. Michael, attended all-class reunions in September. St. Frederick and St. Michael schools closed and merged in 1967 to build and begin Pontiac Catholic High School, which was erected at 1300 Giddings Road - where Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy now resides.
The St. Frederick reunion was held on September 9, with a mass at St. Vincent de Paul in Pontiac and a luncheon at Santia Hall in Keego Harbor. The St. Michael reunion was held on September 16, with a mass at Shrine of St. Joseph in Pontiac and a luncheon at Scott Lake Banquet Center in Waterford. Alumni in attendance ranged from graduating class years 1934 through 1967. Special thanks to Patty Dean Philips (SF) and Lance Butler (SM) for organizing these special celebrations.

Newly refurbished science labs blessed by head of school
In a short ceremony at Notre Dame's Pontiac campus, the newly refurbished science labs were blessed by head of school Fr. Leon Olszamowski, s.m., in front of board members, faculty and staff. The work on the labs, financed primarily with donations, was wrapped up in late August.
The complete renovation of the science and chemistry labs included the conversion of the biology lab in room C-3 to a chemistry lab. As a result of this new work, the school's two chemistry labs are adjacent to one another and the biology labs are now together in the B-wing.
Additional exhaust/fume hoods and fans have been added to the lab along with new gas and water lines, lighting and flooring. The total cost of the renovation is estimated at about $200,000, the majority of which was donated by the Jurkiw and Schwabauer families. |
Notre Dame dedicates and renames football field
William (Bill) Kozyra served the mission of the school as chairman of the Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2004. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the school's decision to pursue the International Baccalaureate "World School" designation and was a driving force behind the construction of the current athletic field. In addition, his personal benefaction to the Marist Fathers of Detroit and Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy is among the highest of all major donors in the history of the school.
In a special ceremony held at the athletic field in front of Kozyra's family and friends and a host of Notre Dame fans, head of school Fr. Leon Olszamowski, s.m., formally blessed and dedicated the field in Kozyra's name. As part of Notre Dame Prep's homecoming festivities Friday, September 28, the school officially re-named its football field "William Kozyra Alumni Field."
Head of school Fr. Leon Olszamowski, s.m., conducts a blessing and dedication for the William Kozyra Alumni Field September 28, 2012. From left, Gladys Kozyra (Bill Kozyra's mother); son Bill '03 (NDP); daughter Lauren '05 (NDP); Kozyra, Andy Guest, NDPMA VP for Advancement and Olszamowski. |
Notre Dame Annual Fund kicks off
It's a new school year, and with it comes a new annual fund campaign. In the coming weeks, you'll receive a letter in the mail describing the Notre Dame Annual Fund and asking for your support. Later in the year, you may receive a phone call or an e-mail asking for a gift.
Each year we see increased alumni support and we hope this year is no exception. The 2011-12 annual fund saw a 25% increase in alumni donors and a 30% increase in alumni dollars over 2010-11. Please prayerfully consider a gift to the 2012-13 Notre Dame Annual Fund. If you've contributed in the past, consider matching or increasing your most recent gift. If you've not yet supported the annual fund, consider making your first gift to Notre Dame.
If you have any questions about the Notre Dame Annual Fund, please contact Annual Fund Director Frank Castronova '89 (NDHS) at 248-373-2171 x 5 or fcastronova@ndpma.org. |
