ALUMNI NEWS
Alumni Board names new members and officers

At the annual Notre Dame Alumni Association meeting on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, two new members were elected to the association Board of Directors: Meredith Gifford '02 (NDP) and Daniel Terzano '10 (NDP).

Also at the meeting, the board bid farewell to its founding president, Jim Gammicchia '99 (NDP), who completed his three-year term. Under Jim's leadership, the NDAA Board of Directors was established in 2008 and Gammicchia was instrumental in creating its formal set of bylaws, which is currently used today. As well, he was involved in the creation of many of our annual alumni association events. In 2011, Gammicchia was the first alumnus to be recognized by Notre Dame Prep as "volunteer of the year."

The alumni board also bid farewell to Gina (Coppola) Cereska '00 (NDP), who served two years as the board's secretary. Coppola has worked very hard to keep the board meetings and documents organized and detailed. She also has provided leadership for the annual Alumni Irish Games event among other association activities. "Both Jim and Gina have contributed greatly to the alumni association and will be missed," said Director of Alumni Relations Rachel (Alexander) Miller '00 (NDP).

At the June 2012 NDAA meeting, an election was held for the open executive board positions. Current board members voted to elect Daniel Marchese '02 (NDHS) as president (formerly serving as vice president), Victoria Sidor '01 (NDP) as vice president, and Meredith Gifford '02 (NDP) as secretary. Trent Thiry '00 (NDP) remains in the treasurer position, fulfilling his three-year term.

Marketing major credits Notre Dame for college success

Alayna Lekosiotis '09 (NDP) is one busy person. Currently at Michigan State University in East Lansing, the 2009 Notre Dame Prep graduate says that besides a heavy dose of coursework, she stays very involved in a host of extracurricular activities, including membership in the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and the Women in Business Students Association at MSU's Broad College of Business.

In her sorority, she held a number

of positions, including house manager

and Panhellenic delegate, which earned

her a trip to the National Conference

in Arizona. In addition, she also helps

Building Bridges Golf Outing - July 26
Proceeds to help students from low-income families

The 17th-annual Building Bridges Golf Outing, which provides need-based grants to students from low-income families, will be held on Thursday, July 26, at Greystone Golf Club in Romeo, Mich.

Building Bridges was founded by Paul Housey '88 (NDHS) on the belief that thousands of children in metro Detroit are lacking much-needed positive interaction with caring adults. The charity organization's work includes quality education and mentoring for children, an annual holiday gift giving program, and future plans to extend its reach to children in long-term hospital care.

Thanks to the golf outing and ongoing support, Building Bridges will have more than 13 students on education grants at Notre Dame Prep in the next school year.
Gregory Simon '89 (NDHS), NDPMA's dean of admissions and diversity, says that the kids who attend NDP through this program are strong, hardworking students from low-income families. "These students typically come from the Pontiac area and crave the challenge of a top-notch, college-preparatory education."

For a foursome at the outing, the cost is $600, which includes greens fees, a cart, driving range, Bloody Mary bar, breakfast bar, on-course lunch, soft drinks, beer, dinner and contests. For more information, download the flyer, or contact Paul Housey at phousey@snookhousey.com.
Work continues on new science labs

The importance of science in our rapidly changing society is unquestioned. Proper training of the scientists, researchers, physicists and chemists of tomorrow is not just necessary, but absolutely necessary. Therefore it is of vital importance that leading schools like Notre Dame Preparatory and Marist Academy stay on the cutting edge of preparing students for successful post-secondary study in the sciences.

In an effort to further enhance NDPMA's curriculum in the sciences, the administration has approved of and construction has begun on the complete renovation of the science and chemistry labs located on the Pontiac campus.

Among the major steps taken in the renovation project is that classroom C-3, which was a biology lab, will be converted to a chemistry lab. This means that after the work is completed at the end of the summer break, the school's two chemistry labs will be adjacent to one another. The biology labs will now also be together in the B-wing.

The total cost of the renovation is estimated at $200,000, the majority of which was donated by the Jurkiw and Schwabauer families. Full Story

Notre Dame graduates ACTing up again
Post record-breaking ACT score

Notre Dame Preparatory School continued its string of obliterating previous academic records by posting a new school-record ACT average composite score of 27 for the 2012 graduating class, which is higher than any average composite score earned at the school since it opened in 1994.

Last year's graduating class posted a school-record 26.58 score and the 2010 class averaged 26.27, both of which far exceeded state averages for each year. Last year, the American College Testing Program (ACT) said the Michigan average was 20.00 and the national average 21.1. Scores are on a scale of 1 to 36, with 36 being the highest.

It is also worth noting that in the past four years, Notre Dame has had five students earn a perfect individual (student) ACT score of 36. Less than one-tenth of one percent of individual test takers nationwide score such perfection.
