Dear Praire View Alumni,
I would like to begin with special thanks to President Charlotte Jefferson-Huggins and the Central Texas Metro-Plex Chapter for inviting Gladys and me to their Annual Picnic. In addition to meeting committed chapter members, we met two new May Graduates who have come up through our Pre-Alumni group. It is nice to see trees that were planted bearing fruit. It was a hot day, but Panther Love demonstrated by our hosts cooled the day. I always enjoy speaking with Mrs. Reynolds on PV history when we visit. She is very soft spoken and knowledgeable of our University's past.
Why Have a National Convention?
As many of you are aware, the annual National Alumni Association Convention will be held July 25-28, 2012 in Fort Worth, Texas. The registration has been very slow, but generally picks up in early July. Early registration has been extended until July 6. Some of the newer graduates see the convention as a gathering of the senior members. However, in reality, it is a traditional gathering characterized by forward planning and lots of networking opportunities.
This year marks the 38th convention. That means it has spanned over three generations of Panthers. This tradition is something that we should continue since it has made such a positive impact on our University. It affords an opportunity to hear the state of your University, Alumni Association, and Foundation, as well as ask questions. The speakers are very dynamic and informative. We set goals for the forthcoming year and generate our unified plan. In addition, we rotate to cities where families can enjoy a very cost effective summer vacation.
In the recent years we have seen the influx of new graduates in our chapters' leadership and rank. This influx is much needed and welcomed. However, we must respect our past as we move forward. There are some past successes that we must use as examples for growth and some failures that we must not repeat. If we are to continue to grow our organization, we must respect the past and embrace change. I attend NAA conventions because I get re-energized when I see and hear from our earlier graduates. Whether their Golden-year coats are Purple or Gold, they look beautiful. Also, I am encouraged when I hear recommendations for improvements to attract new graduates from our more recent graduates. If you are a regular at the convention, please keep coming, just register earlier. If you have not attended and are in the Dallas - Fort Worth area, come by and feel the Panther Spirit. I hope to see you next month in Fort Worth and in Atlanta in 2013.

Johnson Space Center Chapter
Juneteenth Celebration
Tuesday, June 19, 2012, the Johnson Space Center Alumni Chapter partnered with NASA's African American Employee Resource Group to host a Juneteenth Celebration at the Gilruth Center underneath the Live Oak Pavilion. Almost two-hundred participants were in attendance. The celebration included fish dinners, beverages, music, games, and networking opportunities. Several organizations come out to celebrate with us. The Buffalo Soldiers told the history of Juneteenth, brought displays and distributed tri-fold pamphlets. The United Negro College Fund via the Boeing Black Employees Association were present to share information about their upcoming Fall 2012 scholarship drive. The National Society of Black Engineers - Houston Chapter was present to promote membership and mentoring goals.
Overall the Juneteenth Celebration was a success. The JSC Chapter was able to meet and introduce twenty summer interns from Prairie View A&M that are currently working at NASA or with a contractor this summer. The four JSC Chapter scholarship recipients that will be attending Prairie View A&M in Fall 2012 were also present. All the proceeds from the Juneteenth Celebration will be ear for the marked Endowment Fund.
