RFA: 2012 Davis/Bremer Awards
The CCTS Pilot Program announces the release of the 2012 Davis/Bremer Awards RFA.

The Richard P. and Marie R. Bremer Medical Research Fund and William H. Davis Endowment for Basic Medical Research and The Ohio State University Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) Pilot Program strive to develop outstanding physician scientists at Ohio State.

The funds from these collaborations support preliminary data collection for innovative projects that have high potential of receiving extramural funding. These funds are specifically designed for junior level physician scientists with strong track records in academic medicine as a career. Special consideration is made for research focused toward clinical and translational studies.

Application Deadline: 8:00am, April 15, 2012

Download the RFA in PDF format for more information, or contact Valerie DeGroff with questions.

CCTS Website and CoRR Update
The new CCTS website will launch soon and will be more user-friendly.

The new version of the CCTS website is coming soon. One of the benefits of the new design is a site architecture that is more intuitive and user-friendly, simplifying the process to identify, search and access information. The new architecture was designed in response to customer feedback and input from research team focus groups.

This concept will also be reflected in the new personalized Computerized Research Record (CoRR) integrated with the website.

CoRR provides the ability to track project requests from submission to completion, and effectively manage multiple service and resource consultations through the progression of the planning, implementation and analysis phases of a research project.

2012 Trainee Research Day
The OSU Wexner Medical Center, the Research Institute at NCH and the OSU CCTS will join together April 18-19, 2012 to celebrate research and discovery with the 11th annual OSUMC Trainee Research Day.

The 11th annual OSUMC Trainee Research Day event will feature poster presentations by OSU College of Medicine research trainees and the Allan Yates Memorial Trainee Speaker Series given by selected College of Medicine research trainees.

The 2012 OSUMC Research Day Keynote Address will be given by Louis Ptáček, MD, John C. Coleman Distinguished Professor of Neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, and member of the Institute of Medicine.

Visit the 2012 Trainee Research Day website for more information.

Netwellness.org adds a research arm to its extensive content aimed at answering health related questions for Ohioans and people worldwide.

Netwellness is a non-profit consumer health website that has been in operation for over 16 years. It provides high quality information created and evaluated by medical and health professionals at The Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University, and the University of Cincinnati.

The new research section of Netwellness provides information about the different types of research, how to get involved with clincal trials, what to expect when participating in research, and an "Ask an expert" feature.

Investigators are encouraged to forward participants who want to learn more about research participation to the Netwellness.org Research webpage

Innovation and Commercialization Forums
Charles Lockwood, MD, dean of the College of Medicine, will be hosting commercialization forums.

Throughout the year, a series of innovation and commercialization seminars including educational presentations, panel discussions and Q and A's with inventors, entrepreneurs, patent attorneys, business leaders and medical industries will be held.

Participants will learn about the OSU commercialization and technology transfer process that can lead to new drug/device therapies, diagnostics, techniques and information technology.

Direct any questions or comments regarding the forum and follow-up educational series to Brenda Akins or 247-1973 in the College of Medicine Office of Research.

Faculty / Staff Highlight
Sean Lawler, PhD

Sean Lawler, PhD, is looking to identify critical pro-invasive molecules in the brain in order to facilitate the design of target-specific therapeutic agents.

Lawler is trying to develop accurate assays for brain tumor cells. The invasion of glioma cells surrounding the brain is a major obstacle to effective treatment and understanding their movements is vital.

Using an electrospun tissue engineering scaffold, Lawler and his team have found that glioma cells grow and migrate on the structure and that migration is dependent on the alignment of the fibers.

CCTS Bionutrition Core

Bionutrition is a collection of tools, techniques, and experts who provide data for nutritional and physical assessments of the body. These include diet, metabolic rate, body composition, fat distribution, physical activity and fitness.

In addition, this Core of experts can control and measure what a person will eat for one or more meals by using software and equipment from the metabolic kitchen.

Bionutrition Core experts help scientists to discover which method will be best for each specific population of patients and understand their data.

There are two technicians, four undergrad nutrition majors, two Master's degree Dietitians, one Master's degree Exercise Physiologist and one PhD MS Dietitian who provide this bionutritional expertise.
