Merry Christmas  Everyone

News From Our Centres
  November/December 2011

Greetings!

Seasons greetings to you all!
As Jawaharlal Nehru said "the wheel of change moves on" and this is certainly true of the LCCH. With our new offices in Singapore, and new training centre in the heart of London's university land (and for those of a Thespian bent, turn left out of the office door and you step into theatre land too), coupled with the exciting course developments that will be revealed as and when they come to fruition, 2012 looks like it will be a very good year - not just for the LCCH, but for the profession as a whole. As we continue to build and strengthen our links within medicine and academia, public awareness and trust in hypnotherapy grows. So it's onwards and upwards as we stride purposefully into the year of the Olympics.

We would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very happy and prosperous Christmas and New Year to you all.Menorah

And to our Jewish friends and colleagues, we wish you a very Happy Hanukkah.

New Offices and Training Centre for London

56 Bloomsbury outside1
Situated in the heart of London's university land, and just a stones throw from the central hub of Tottenham Court Road tube station, we are settling in to our new home very nicely. It's proving popular with staff, students and patients, and with the British Museum being a very close neighbour, cultural respite is only a brief walk away. Perhaps we should organise field trips for CPPD students to examine those ancient Egyptian and Assyrian artefacts that depict the earliest written records documenting hypnotic procedures? We wonder what they hieroglyphs for "NOWwww" would be?

News from Exeter
Cathedral in the snow

Season's greetings to you all from Exeter, as I sit and type this, the sun is shining and I am looking at the fallen leaves all over the lawn again, a reminder that another year is at an end.

We are looking forward to an exciting year in 2012, the year of the Olympics in the UK, goal setting, achievement, creativity and inspiration & motivation, will be high on the agenda.

Exeter has started to take bookings for the next CPPD which we are all looking forward to commencing in April 2012.

This year has been busy, with events shows and talks throughout the west country where the London College of Clinical Hypnosis has been proudly displayed.

More are being planned for next year, and although our local radio station did not respond to our offers to come and talk this year, we remain positive that that will be a development for the future.

Meanwhile students from last year who have just started to practice are growing their skills. We look forward to keeping in touch with them at Support Meetings which are regularly held in the south west. These support meetings are organized by Cary Charles.

Exeter xmas lightsFormal Clinical Supervision is now available and actively encouraged in the south west. We have been very lucky over the years to have some excellent practitioners who have been very supportive and both informal and formal supervision has been available for students and the more experienced practitioners. With the growing focus on the more formal approach and a demystification of what is meant, needed and agreed as supervision, it is felt that we should be doing more to help our therapists be the best they can be within the unique and eclectic model of therapy that we use, which requires understanding of the approach and the speed at which we sometimes work.

A note: students study information " Law of Reversed Effect"?

CPPD students have often asked me about the often so called " laws of suggestion", in particular the "law of reversed effect". We have had some interesting discussions on the topic, and it is interesting to me to find that the study of reversed effect links readily to the study of suppression. I was given an article last week by a colleague entitled Thoughts on Suppression by Erskine J and Georgiou G published in Psychology Today Magazine Nov 2011.

Detour

It is an interesting article which asks a number of questions such as, if we stop using thought suppression, what other techniques might be useful to control our thoughts and behaviours?

It concludes by telling us that their study seems to be demonstrating the tendency showing that thought suppression leads to doing the very thing that you were trying to avoid, and "worse still it can do this and make you feel as though it happened without your intention".

It seems like there is some developmental work being done to help support some of our old ideas, we just need to know where to look .

Have a very happy holiday,Mouse bells

A Joke for Christmas - How the Fairy Came to be at the Top of the Tree

Angel TrumpetWhen four of Santa's elves got sick, the trainee elves did not produce toys as fast as the regular ones, and Santa began to feel the Pre-Christmas pressure.

Then Mrs. Claus told Santa her Mother was coming to visit, which stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two others had jumped the fence and were out, Heaven knows where.

Then when he began to load the sleigh, one of the floorboards cracked, the toy bag fell to the ground and all the toys were scattered.

Frustrated, Santa went in the house for a cup of apple cider and a shot of rum. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered the elves had drunk all the cider and hidden the liquor.. In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the cider jug, and it broke into hundreds of little glass pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found the mice had eaten all the straw off the end of the broom.

FairyJust then the doorbell rang, and an irritated Santa marched to the door, yanked it open, and there stood a little firy with a great big Christmas tree.

The fairy said very cheerfully, 'Merry Christmas, Santa. Isn't this a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Where would you like me to stick it?'

And so began the tradition of the little fairy on top of the Christmas tree....

Hypnotherapy for Warts: a Success!

Head

During the PG Cert. course I first came across the concept that hypnotherapy may be used to treat warts. My first reaction was sceptical to say the least. I am a medic, and while I am fully confident in the usefulness of hypnotherapy in the psychological domain, I believed that infections needed different treatments.

However as I thought further about this, and if I have learned anything from the study of hypnotherapy it is to keep an open mind, I began to form a theory of how hypnotherapy might be an effective tool in the treatment of simple viral infections such as warts. Personal experience has taught me that people with a positive mental attitude, tend to heal more quickly than their more pessimistic counterparts. This led me to wonder whether the psyche might have a significant impact on the functioning of the immune system. It was this that made me choose viral warts for my case study.

One of my partners was able to find a teenage girl who had verrucae that had failed to respond to 18 months of medical treatment including salicylic acid and liquid Nitrogen, who was fed up enough to give hypnotherapy a try. I saw her for four sessions, the first being largely introductory, and to teach self hypnosis. For the therapy I used a combination of the Healing Garden script from Roger Allen, Control Room of the Mind, to try to induce an upregulation of the immune system, and visualisation of a future free of verrucae.

After tSnowmanhe second session I thought there was some improvement though I could not be sure it was wishful thinking. However after the third session there was a definite improvement and complete resolution after the fourth. I'm not sure who was more surprised, client or therapist. Suffice to say I am a sceptic no longer.

St Georges Hospital, London

Audit in Progress

St Georges HospitalFollowing intensive discussions, Feisal Umar (LCCH) and Barry Quinn (St Georges) agreed on the format for the audit of the hypnotherapy service being provided to cancer patients at St Georges Hospital.

The audit commenced on the 1st October 2011 and will continue until the end of March 2012.

It is hoped that the results of the audit will be presented at the next Nurses' conference, and published in the various medical publications.

University of Malaya Pain Clinic, Kuala Lumpur

University of MalayaThe hypnotherapy pain clinic has been running successfully at the University of Malaya Hospital since June 2009.  The clinic addresses the needs of patients typically resistant to other methods of pain management. Currently we work primarily with brachial plexus injury which can be quite debilitating and traumatic.

Our clinic is held every Tuesday. One of the big learning outcomes from working in a busy hospital is that irrespective of where we conduct our hypnotherapy sessions (in some instances this was in a room that had a loud buzzer announcing treatment rooms and patient names right outside) our hypnosis patients were able to drift comfortably into the right depth of trance. Of course credit also goes to our clinical hypnotherapists and their expertise in manipulation of distractions and of course the NOWwww deepener. Working at the clinic has provided the LCCH with the opportunity to translate scripts into the four main languages in Malaysia: Malay, Chinese dialect - primarily Cantonese, Tamil and English. We are happy to report that even the NOWwww deepener translates well!

Brachial plexus
The site of brachial plexus injury

Since the pain clinics inception we have been measuring the efficacy of our treatment protocol and have found that patients are benefiting significantly from long-term pain reduction and the management of other areas of concern to them. We plan to publish the results of our approach in 2012.

Prof Tunku Dr Sara Ahmad Yahaya (Head of Orthopedic Dept) Sheila Menon and Peter Mabbutt, Dr Siva (Sivashanmuganathan) and Dr Alan (Soh) form the core team for the Pain Clinic with Dr Chan Chee Ken, Medical Officer.
Talks Given by LCCH Lecturers

Talk on Hypnotherapy and Cancer

Feisal UmarFeisal Umar was invited to talk to the Wimbledon Cancer Friendship Group. Below is an excerpt from their Winter newsletter:

'Feisal Umar, clinical hypnotherapist and counsellor, working part-time as part of St George's Hospital oncology counselling team.

Feisal gave a fascinating introductory talk, and practical mini workshop. He explained and showed us how self-hypnosis can be used to calm patients down, help them come to terms with their illness, overcome pain, lose weight, stop smoking and help many phobias. Patients at St George's hospital can ask to be referred to him.'

North London Collegiate School

Collegiate PosterPeter Mabbutt was invited to give a talk on hypnotherapy to senior students of the North London Collegiate School. Peter was following in the footsteps of various Prime Ministers, politicians of note and a smattering of Spice Girls who had talked there before. His talk gave a general overview of hypnotherapy, whilst dispelling popular myths and misconceptions. The attending teachers were amazed at how interested and quiet the students were and wanted to know how he had hypnotised the audience of over 100 - and could he teach them the technique to use in their classrooms!

The poster prepared by the school's Psychological Society advertising the event is reproduced to the right. Peter would like it known that he thinks his likeness in the poster is very accurate.

Exploring Clinical Hypnosis - a Lunch Talk at the National University of Singapore

NUS Talk

Sheila Menon, Principal & Director of LCCH Asia, presented a lively introduction to clinical hypnosis to some of the leading academicians at the National University of Singapore on 11 October 2011. Approximately 40 students attended this talk which focused on the theme "Change your mind, change your life".

Often people ask these questions - what is holding me back? Would I like to realize my true potential? Is optimal health and wellness important to me?

Sheila's talk among others touched on the basic introduction to hypnotherapy, what is hypnosis, the history of hypnosis, research, hypnosis and the mind, hypnotherapy session, its clinical applications, brief introduction to LCCH, our course structure - certificate, diploma & practitioner, list of accreditation bodies, etc.

KPJ Pharmacy Seminar and Workshop: 'Quality Care Approaches for Patient Safety'

KPJThis workshop was organized by Kumpulan Perubatan Johor (KPJ) Healthcare Berhad which is a member of Johor Corporation and the leading private healthcare provider in the country with a network of 20 hospitals in Malaysia and 2 in Indonesia. With more than 2,600 licensed beds, KPJ hospitals offer a comprehensive range of medical services and have treated some 2.42 million outpatients and over 220,000 inpatients in 2010. KPJ's core values are ensuring safety, delivering service with courtesy, performing duties with integrity, exercising professionalism at all times and striving for continuous improvement.

(Source : KPJ Healthcare Berhad website : www.kpjhealth.com.my)

In line with this, KPJ organized this seminar and workshop from 3-4 December 2011 at the Selesa Beach Resort in Port Dickson, Seremban, Malaysia.

There were a total of about 100 participants who mostly consisted of pharmacists/assistant pharmacists from KPJ International University College/KPJ Group of Hospitals, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education - namely University Malaya Medical Centre, Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia, Ministry of Defence, private hospitals as well as retail pharmacies. From the academia side, participants came from the Ministry of Health, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, University of Malaya, private institutions of higher learning and pharmacy students.

The objective of this seminar and workshop was to inform participants on new developments within the pharmacy profession towards patient safety. Also to update participants on the best clinical pharmacy practices applicable to pharmacists in the hospital setting, health and community pharmacies as well as academia. Finally to provide a platform for participants from various areas of pharmacy practice to share their clinical and technical experiences towards patient safety.Sheila Menon

Sheila Menon was invited as a speaker and she presented a topic on 'The Role of Clinical Hypnotherapy for Patient Compliance'.

Non-compliance with prescribed medication is an age-old problem. It is widespread across all therapeutic fields and affects groups ranging from post-transplant patients taking life-saving immunosuppressive treatment, patients with diabetes, arthritis or depression, and patients who have been prescribed medicines to reduce their risk of attacks or strokes.

We all know that clinical hypnotherapy is an effective means of encouraging behavioural and emotional change allowing patients to challenge unhealthy beliefs whilst creating more appropriate health related attitudes and behaviours. This makes it a useful adjunct for improved patient compliance and adherence of prescribed medication and lifestyle changes. There is an added benefit that it can help mitigate the impact of certain side effects, improve motivation and reduce discomfort of lengthy or invasive procedures.

One Day Dream Exploration Seminar

Wolfgang DreamThis seminar was organised on 3 December 2011 in LCCH office in Kuala Lumpur. About 12 people attended this event.

The presenter was Dr Wolfgang Wald, a clinical hypnotherapist trained with the LCCH. He specializes in dreams using clinical hypnosis to stimulate the creative process.

Participants gained a meaningful insight to the world of dreams. They understood better about dreams, the interpretation of dreams through hypnosis and other different methods, how they look at life and how their egos look at it as well as able to expand their flexibilities and responses to daily life challenges.

Training for National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) Under the Ministry of Home Affairs Malaysia

No to drugsThe LCCH was invited by this government agency to conduct training for its counsellors. This training is designed as an Introduction to Clinical Hypnosis for Counsellors as a new modality for working with addiction and substance abuse.

This specialist programme was conducted at the Cure & Care 1Malaysia Clinic in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. And excitingly it is the first hypnosis and addiction programme conducted in Bahasa Malaysia and all lecturers are pioneering clinical hypnotherapists from LCCH Malaysia.

The course was designed specifically to provide counsellors working with substance abuse with an insight of the benefits of including clinical hypnosis with their treatment protocol either by working with qualified Clinical Hypnotherapists or by including basic relaxation and ego strengthening to stable (non psychiatric) client and patient groups.

The objective of this agency is to prevent an individual from getting involved with drugs, to treat and rehabilitate drug addicts, to prevent relapse in addiction and to curb supply, trafficking and drug abuse.

LCCH Penang

Penang BridgeLCCH Penang visits the head office. The LCCH Penang is the second centre for the LCCH in Malaysia and offers all the same programmes that you find in London and Kuala Lumpur. It may be small but students are enthusiastic and committed to the benefits of clinical hypnosis.

World Hypnotism Day is celebrated every year on January 4th. In conjunction with this Day next year, the LCCH will be organizing two one-day workshops on 14 and 15 January in Malaysia & Singapore respectively.

Positive change seemSingapore New Buildings to be in the air throughout the LCCH. At the same time as London was moving, the LCCH in Singapore moved into its new premises in Bestway Building at 12 Prince Edward Road. This new location is a heritage building which is home to many academic institutions in Singapore. The centre is situated in the main Central District of Singapore, at Tanjung Pagar, a few minutes away from the Marina area where the main Singapore attraction is, Marina Sands Casino. The centre is accessible by bus and also the MRT (Tanjung Pagar MRT Station) - a mere 5 minutes walk.

The centre has a hall that can accommodate 9 to 12 people for workshop discussion and tutorials. Two very cosy therapy rooms with leather recliners and a cafeteria within the campus which caters food for all races (including a Muslim halal stall). There is ample parking space and charges are S$1.00 for every 30 minutes from 7 am to 6 pm. After 6 pm to 12 midnight, a flat rate of S$3.00 is charged per entry. Night parking which is 12 midnight to 7 am is also charged at a flat rate of S$3.00 per entry.

Tony and SignTony Chuah (above), Centre Manager for the LCCH Asia has worked hard to transform the new office into a cosy new home for the LCCH. There is a training room and two therapy rooms. There are a few good pictures on the LCCH Singapore facebook and a request from Tony to get press the like button. Past students are invited to visit the new office and share a cup of coffee with Tony or indeed pop into the therapy room for a little bit of top up on those relaxing skills.

For the LCCH Diploma graduates, Tony has also introduced an awareness programme for 2012, when he will be inviting surrounding businesses and working professionals to visit and experience self-hypnosis. There will also be lunch time talks on the benefits of clinical hypnosis. It is a great start to the 2012 and a big thank you to Tony for organising this for our Diploma graduates. Needless to say anyone wishing to give Tony a hand an contact him on tony.chuah@lcch.co.uk

Becoming a Clinical Hypnotherapist in Singapore

Class SingaporeThe LCCH Asia has introduced a brand new course to Singapore. The Foundation in Clinical Hypnosis is modelled on the original LCCH course created by the LCCH UK in 1984. But there are plenty of new features too. Students benefit from studying exactly the same curriculum as their colleagues in the UK. In addition, there is a new style of tutorial that allows students to explore areas that interest them and to experience a complementary session of clinical hypnosis. And in Singapore students get two qualifications - the Foundation in Clinical Hypnosis issued by the LCCH Asia and the International Certificate in Clinical Hypnosis from LCCH UK.

Perhaps the best thing about the Foundation course is that it combines fun and personal exploration with serious ethical study. Students who pass the Certificate exam are eligible to progress to the Advanced Training Course and seek careers as clinical hypnotherapists.

The Foundation Course in Clinical Hypnosis is a practical and fun filled course. It is a unique qualification which teaches relaxation to students. For the first time ever, the LCCH Asia is offering two qualifications for one fee.

The other benefits of signing up for this Foundation course which may appeal to potential students out there are as follows.

  • One free copy of the bestselling book on Hypnotherapy by the CEO of LCCH, Peter Mabbutt and his colleague Mike Bryant, will given to students who register before 6 January 2012.
  • One free self hypnosis session as part of the training package with the LCCH. As part of your ongoing success training, exploring this course provides you with exclusive personal support. Students can focus on personal success strategies, health and wellness coaching or personal discovery and exploration. Typical fee charged is RM300.
  • Students registering before 6 January qualify for a free cash voucher (worth SDD100) redeemable towards LCCH Asia conducted Course/Master Class/Workshop or purchase of LCCH recommended books.

We will be starting the Year of the Dragon with our next intake which will be on 17 March 2012.

Advanced Training in Clinical Hypnosis in Singapore

Singapore StudentsThe Advanced Training Course is designed to provide you with the ability to work as a clinical hypnotherapist. Many Singaporean students completing the Foundation or Certificate course proceed to the Advanced Training programme and learn many different ways they can help themselves and others. The course covers a wide range of conditions and includes working with psychological, medical, lifestyle, emotional, behavioural, coping strategies and habits. Peter Mabbutt was a guest on Marlow FM's Health Show talking to Shelagh Wright and Ann Garry about hypnotherapy.

Sheila Menon gave an interview on Malaysia's business radio station BFM on 'Natal Hypnotherapy' on 23 November 2011. The 20 minute interview explores the benefits of introducing hypnosis as an option for pregnant women following the pilot study in Lancashire UK where 800 first time mothers will be using clinical hypnosis. In Malaysia, Zurah Beevi an LCCH Diploma graduate will begin her PhD on this subject exciting subject. It is very encouraging news since women who use hypnosis describe less pain, generally use less pain medication and also describe the birthing process as being more enjoyable. Babies born also register better scores on the Apgar scores at 1 minute and 5 minutes.

You can listen to its podcast in the front page of our website www.hypnosis-malaysia.com titled 'Sheila on Hypnobirthing' as well as read a true life testimony on using hypnosis to manage morning sickness.

Hypnotherapy and General Medical Practice
We reprint extracts from an article by LCCH CEO/Director of Studies Peter Mabbutt, written for GP's so as to give them a greater understanding of hypnotherapy:

Hypnotherapy has a role to play in general medical practice. It can be used to help alleviate a wide variety of presenting symptoms commonly encountered by the GP on a day-to-day basis. With the worldwide drive to provide a more holistic approach to patient care, hypnotherapy can:

  • Integrate into general medical practice
  • Be complimentary to conventional medicine
  • Provide an alternative treatment where conventional medicine is ineffective

There are many presenting symptoms that can benefit from hypnotherapy. These include:

  • Smoking

Helping the patient to confront their concerns with becoming a non-smoker. Helping to build up their willpower so that they feel confident in stopping and remaining a non-smoker. Helping to decondition the times when they would be engaging in smoking behaviours. Helping to place the focus of attention away from expecting withdrawal symptoms thus changing their expectation of withdrawal to one of effectively coping. Focussing on the benefits of remaining a non-smoker thus increasing the motivation to remain so.

  • Weight control

Dealing with the control issues of eating. Helping to make the process of changing to a healthy dietary lifestyle a rewarding experience. Helping to change a person's view of healthy eating to one that is positive and motivational. Helping to encourage general lifestyle change with regard to activity and exercise. Dealing with any underlying emotional issues that may be contributing to weight gain and unhealthy weight maintenance.

  • Phobias

Deconditioning the fear response to phobic stimuli and encouraging a sense of coping and control when confronted with it.

  • Anxiety and stress including panic disorder

Dealing with the underlying psychological factors that are driving the anxiety or stress response. Encouraging access to healthy psychological coping strategies, including training in appropriate breathing (especially with panic diorder). Deconditioning the times when people are looking for stress. Deconditioning the conditioned response that can occur to a variety of situational cues that trigger a stress or anxiety response. Direct reduction of the sympathetic nervous system over-activity that is present during the anxiety or stress response by practicing self-hypnosis, thus reducing the physical risks of prolonged exposure to stress.

  • Depression

Helping the patient to reconstruct their world-view and perception of self through direct suggestion and goal setting. Encouraging a healthy reintegration into their work and social environment. Helping the patient to process any underlying psychological factors that have contributed to the development of their depression. To encourage compliance with pharmacotherapy.

  • Eating disorders

Helping a patient to process and work through the psychological factors that have contributed to the development of the eating disorder. Once this has been successfully undertaken, to then encourage a healthy eating habits.

  • Cancer care

Helping the patient to handle any pain control issues. Helping the patient to cope effectively with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Helping the patient to deal with the psychological factors of mortality that can result from a diagnosis of cancer. Helping the patient to redefine their concept of self in order to healthily incorporate the diagnosis into their life. Helping the patient to gain a sense of psychological self-control with their view of the role cancer and its treatment is playing in their life. Encouraging healthy lifestyle choices to compliment medical treatment

  • Sleeping disorders

Dealing with the conditioned responses to the sleeping environment that can contribute to a sleeping disorder. Helping the patient to process any underlying psychological upset that is driving the sleeping disorder such as stress, anxiety or trauma. Encouraging healthy sleeping patterns through direct suggestion and goal setting.

  • Panic disorder

Encouraging an automatic and healthy breathing pattern that prevents the hyperventilation response. Deconditioning situational cues that could trigger the panic response. Engendering a sense of self-control. Dealing with the underlying psychological causes of panic disorder.

  • Dermatological conditions

Dealing with psychological factors that could contribute to the expression of the condition, such as stress, anxiety or depression. Using psychoneuroimmunology techniques to encourage healthy immune system functioning. Encouraging compliance to pharmacotherapy. Encouraging healthy lifestyle choices to compliment pharmacotherapy.

  • Asthma

Encouraging compliance to pharmacotherapy. Encouraging a relaxation response to asthma attacks that reduces the hyperventilation and stress response that can significantly make an attack worse. Challenging unhealthy beliefs that may restrict healthy lifestyle choices that can improve a patient's condition.

In addition, hypnotherapy has been shown to be effective in the treatment of:

  • Post traumatic stress disorder
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Tinnitus
  • Bruxism
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Psychosexual disorders
  • Metabolic disorders

Physical Conditions

Where hypnotherapy is used with physiological conditions such as cancer, the focus is on handling the psychological responses. With current understanding of psychoneuroimmunology (mind-body medicine) this can explain the reported potential alleviation of physical symptoms.

Within cardiac care, hypnotherapy has an important role to play. Taking into consideration the neurological and physiological basis of the trance state where parasympathetic nervous system activity predominates, then it is not surprising that hypnotherapy has been shown to help reduce blood pressure, heart rate and muscular tension thus reducing cerebrovascular and cardiovascular risk.

Ethically trained hypnotherapists work with the medical profession and will not work against medical advice, working as an integrative approach to patient care. However, where conventional medicine cannot provide symptom relief, or where this is minimal, hypnotherapy can potentially provide a solution. This is often seen in the alleviation of chronic pain, the distressing symptoms of chemotherapy and irritable bowel syndrome.

Prevention not Cure

With the drive towards encouraging a healthier lifestyle in the population and to thus reduce the burden on the healthcare system hypnotherapy can be used to encourage preventative measures such as smoking cessation, handling alcohol and drug issues, and working with weight control issues with the overweight and profoundly obese. Hypnotherapy's role is to help the patient comfortably adapt to recommendations for lifestyle change and to provide the motivation to maintain such adaptations. This can then minimise the risk of the development of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and metabolic disorders. Where these already exist, hypnotherapy can help the patient to adapt to the lifestyle recommendations as detailed above, as well as ensuring compliance with pharmacotherapy.

Ethical Practice

It is not the role of a hypnotherapist to diagnose. However, appropriately trained hypnotherapy practitioners will guide a patient to seek medical advice when it becomes obvious that a symptom is of concern, especially when a patient has not seen his or her doctor about it. In such cases, a hypnotherapist will not treat that patient until their doctor has seen him or her. With this in mind, hypnotherapists have a potentially important role in guiding a patient to seek medical advice before a symptom can significantly be harmful to the patient's health.

Prescription medicine and psychosis

Where psychological symptoms require the prescription of psychoactive medication, hypnotherapy can help the patient to work through the underlying issues, minimising the treatment time with pharmacotherapy and thus alleviating both psychological and physiological dependence on medication.

Hypnotherapy should not be used with psychotic spectrum disorders as it has the potential to further compound symptoms.

Selecting an Appropriate Practitioner

It is important to ensure that a hypnotherapy practitioner has been appropriately trained. This means that they should have extensive classroom-based training at both a theoretical and practical level with independent validation from either the medical or university systems. Hypntherapists should also belong to a professional organisation that oversees the professional and ethical conduct of its members. Each member of such body should have professional indemnity insurance.

A Final Word

Hypnotherapy can also be used to help reduce stress in the over-burdened GP!

NIC Bill Frost: EMDR and NLP Phobia/Aversion Software for Therapists (PC / Mac)

Neuro Innovations (http://www.neuroinnovations.com) have been helping to automate aspects of psychotherapeutic treatment since 1998 and is managed by LCCH senior lecturer Bill Frost. Their flagship product is the Therapists Toolkit that consists of almost all of their software products designed for use by therapists or for guided self-use. Most of the products within the discounted Therapists Toolkit bundle can also be purchased individually if required. The software products within the Therapists Toolkit bundle include:

EMDR Pro is an advanced EMDR software system that has been designed to automate the generation of eye movements thereby allowing the therapist to focus on the therapy itself. Very simply an object or image tracks from left to right in any direction whilst at the same time auditory stimulation tracks from left to right at the same rate. The current version is easily the most powerful form of EMDR software on the market today. If you wish you may select tracking images / background images from a very large library of images covering a wide range of issues. This means that systematic desensitisation can be merged into the EMDR process seamlessly if required. EMDR Pro converts your laptop or desktop into a state of the art EMDR treatment tool. EMDR Pro also supports the use of USB powered electronic Tactile Units. (Neuro Innovations support a variety of forms of EMDR Software for different platforms eg PC / Mac and level of EMDR / computer expertise).

The NLP Swish Technique visually maps the submodalities of something that is wanted into the submodalities of something that is not wanted and can be used to install new behaviour / change thinking / change mood states. vSwish Lite is a basic implementation of the Swish technique with static images and sounds. The user is visually guided through the use of the technique via on-screen instructions. vSwish Pro is a more advanced implementation of the Swish technique in which the user has the ability to select any image / sound and to save / reload settings.

The NLP Map Across Technique maps the submodalities of something that is liked into the submodalities of something tha
t is not liked or visa versa. The technique can be used to install aversion or to enable desensitisation in the case of phobic stimuli. Neuro Innovations'  Map Across products enables users to select their own images / audio or use one of the preset modules covering chocolate / chips / sugar / cake / cigarettes / drugs / sedatives / alcohol stimuli, that are then repeatedly associated with an image of dog excrement and vomiting sounds in some cases. A range of images and sounds are provided.

Neuro Innovations' NLP Phobias software product combines the NLP Map Across technique for Phobias and the NLP Fast Phobia "Cure" Technique. In the NLP Map Across technique for Phobias module images of that which is feared are associated with totally safe images and sounds. The NLP Fast Phobia "Cure" Technique module visually guides the user through the complex Fast Phobia Technique process with preset images covering a variety of common phobias.

Other products include: "Vivo" is a tool to gradually present trigger images for desensitisation purposes. "Flooder" rapidly presents a stream of images with audio for aversive or desensitisation purposes. "Bilat" converts any audio file into bilateral audio whereby the panning tracks from left to right repeatedly. "Visual TFT" visually guides the user through the TFT process for anxiety. "Virtual Flight" guides the user through a virtual flight from arrival at the airport through to an eventual holiday. The "Sick Bag" is designed to help in the treatment of emetophobia by facilitating gradual exposure to vomit / nausea related images and sounds. Neuro Innovations also maintain large libraries of multimedia resources (images / sounds / videos) for use by therapists.
