News From Our Centres
  October 2011
Greetings!

LCCH London is on the move!!!!
Autumn is finally here, and with autumn comes change. That change extends to the LCCH Offices in London. Yes, we are on the move. We have acquired a wonderful new training centre in the heart of London's university land, a stones throw from Birkbeck College. When we move in next month, we will be moving the majority of the London-based training to our new facilities. We will be letting each group know when their classes will be transferred and will be publishing our new address too. Keep an eye out on your emails. Of course, we will have plenty of pictures for the next LCCH News.

Waiting for new course dates?
These will be published as soon as we have moved.

Let Us Know What You Are Up To
If you are an LCCH student or graduate and have featured in the media, or are involved in an interesting project and would like people to know about it then send details to your local centre manager or to us at info@lcch.co.uk and we will publish it in an upcoming issue of the LCCH News.

With very best wishes,

The LCCH Team

News from Exeter
Exeter Cathedral

Exeter has had a very quiet start to the Autumn, but is now gearing up, for a busy time to come.     We would like to congratulate all our CPPD students on the 1941 course, and look forward to meeting them all again when they join us once more on the next PgCert' course.    The dates for all our courses will be set very soon.

News from the Support Group Meeting in October

supportA great opportunity to share and be supported in your practice.  This is peer group support for all who are trained by LCCH.

At the last meeting:

  • Strategies for handling clients with ulcerative colitis were discussed
  • Glove analgesia techniques were discussed in detail, with some really useful extra tips being shared.

  • Other methods of pain management were discussed.

The planned next meeting for December is to be rescheduled in recognition of the fact that most people tend to  have loads of Christmas shopping to attend to. It will probably be moved to mid-January, and may be the first in Exeter . More to come on that in a later email.

I wish you all the very best and look forward to seeing you all soon.

Evelyn Aitken's Story

Evelyn AitkenSince the age of 11 years old, I have been fascinated by hypnosis. At the age of 11 I developed severe pains in my back and after months of seeing doctors and osteopaths nothing helped. It became the conclusion of doctors that I was imagining the pain or just attention seeking. This became a real problem for me and I began to believe that I had something more sinister and therefore was afraid to go to sleep at night through fear and worry. As a result my school work suffered terribly not only was I in severe pain but I was overtired and unable to concentrate on anything and was truly miserable.

My mother became very anxious and since all else had failed she took me to a hypnotist in Glasgow. The memory of the room is still clear in my mind today and 33 years on I can still hear his voice although I cannot remember his name. After two sessions, the pain had not gone but the fear was no longer there and to this day when I'm anxious I remember the words calm, confidence and courage flowing down my right hand.

Thirty three years later after many years of curiosity, I contacted the Harvest Clinic and enrolled in the certificate course and then on to the diploma course. Over the last two years I have learned so much not only how to hypnotise people but a much further insight into what makes us behave the way we do and indeed much more about myself. It is definitely a challenge but worth every moment.

Placement News
Ernest Bevin College
George Nahlis
In a recent session at the college eight table tennis players participated. This session was more about preparation for competition and so we focussed on immediate preparation,
challenging competition scenarios and triggers and anchoring for positive mental and physical boost.

Checks were made to ensure that players had been working on their goals and been practicing mental preparation techniques.

The session included:-

1. Extending "best day" performance into weekends games
2. Developing and allowing a balance between tension/relaxation and
    alertness/focussed concentration
3. Play around the table, owning the table, coming forward to avoid
    defensiveness.
4. Resetting self after being down for several points
5. Developing a "day before" and match day routine
6. Challenges during the game
7. One to one brief check with each player, answering questions and positive
    encouragement
8. Ascertaining  players current state of mind and emotional state from the Coach
    to personalise interventions
9. Utilising skills during the game, "experiences yourself"
10.Avoiding distraction and being in the moment, not thinking about previous
    point etc.
11. Helping team members to positively expect the unexpected
12. Work on post-match diary or log book to discuss with Coach

The session was well received and we worked with a former England number 1 Christian Thompson. We are awaiting the results of the first matches....

This device delivers a precise microcurrent format that stimulates the Alpha State - such as is experienced in meditation or hypnosis. The Alpha-Stim has ten million users worldwide. It is routinely used by therapists in The US and Australia and is rapidly gaining market penetration in Europe. There is considerable independent research to show that it is three times more effective than many SSRI antidepressants with none of the side effects.

This Certificated training will give you all the information you need to begin using the device in your own practice and the opportunity to experience the effects yourself while watching the results on a biofeedback screen.

NICBill Frost: EMDR and NLP Phobia/Aversion Software for Therapists (PC / Mac)

Neuro Innovations (http://www.neuroinnovations.com) have been helping to automate aspects of psychotherapeutic treatment since 1998 and is managed by LCCH senior lecturer Bill Frost. Their flagship product is the Therapists Toolkit that consists of almost all of their software products designed for use by therapists or for guided self-use. Most of the products within the discounted Therapists Toolkit bundle can also be purchased individually if required. The software products within the Therapists Toolkit bundle include:

EMDR Pro is an advanced EMDR software system that has been designed to automate the generation of eye movements thereby allowing the therapist to focus on the therapy itself. Very simply an object or image tracks from left to right in any direction whilst at the same time auditory stimulation tracks from left to right at the same rate. The current version is easily the most powerful form of EMDR software on the market today. If you wish you may select tracking images / background images from a very large library of images covering a wide range of issues. This means that systematic desensitisation can be merged into the EMDR process seamlessly if required. EMDR Pro converts your laptop or desktop into a state of the art EMDR treatment tool. EMDR Pro also supports the use of USB powered electronic Tactile Units. (Neuro Innovations support a variety of forms of EMDR Software for different platforms eg PC / Mac and level of EMDR / computer expertise).

The NLP Swish Technique visually maps the submodalities of something that is wanted into the submodalities of something that is not wanted and can be used to install new behaviour / change thinking / change mood states. vSwish Lite is a basic implementation of the Swish technique with static images and sounds. The user is visually guided through the use of the technique via on-screen instructions. vSwish Pro is a more advanced implementation of the Swish technique in which the user has the ability to select any image / sound and to save / reload settings.

The NLP Map Across Technique maps the submodalities of something that is liked into the submodalities of something tha
t is not liked or visa versa. The technique can be used to install aversion or to enable desensitisation in the case of phobic stimuli. Neuro Innovations'  Map Across products enables users to select their own images / audio or use one of the preset modules covering chocolate / chips / sugar / cake / cigarettes / drugs / sedatives / alcohol stimuli, that are then repeatedly associated with an image of dog excrement and vomiting sounds in some cases. A range of images and sounds are provided.

Neuro Innovations' NLP Phobias software product combines the NLP Map Across technique for Phobias and the NLP Fast Phobia "Cure" Technique. In the NLP Map Across technique for Phobias module images of that which is feared are associated with totally safe images and sounds. The NLP Fast Phobia "Cure" Technique module visually guides the user through the complex Fast Phobia Technique process with preset images covering a variety of common phobias.

Other products include: "Vivo" is a tool to gradually present trigger images for desensitisation purposes. "Flooder" rapidly presents a stream of images with audio for aversive or desensitisation purposes. "Bilat" converts any audio file into bilateral audio whereby the panning tracks from left to right repeatedly. "Visual TFT" visually guides the user through the TFT process for anxiety. "Virtual Flight" guides the user through a virtual flight from arrival at the airport through to an eventual holiday. The "Sick Bag" is designed to help in the treatment of emetophobia by facilitating gradual exposure to vomit / nausea related images and sounds. Neuro Innovations also maintain large libraries of multimedia resources (images / sounds / videos) for use by therapists.

Usage of the above tools as well as many others is included in Bill Frost's LCCH Masterclass "Technology Enhanced Psychotherapy":

This book is des
Fighting Tigersigned for teenagers, but its contents is applicable to everyone experiencing stress overload - it simplifies the language and makes it very user friendly as a self help book or as a tool to design your own scripts from, and very useful for behavioural change. It incorporates many of the facts we as therapists know and use already but it is simplifies the language bring it down to basics. I often encourage parents to get a copy as it helps them help their teenagers and young children too, and I also believe it helps the parents combat some of their own stress.

Non Violent Communication. A Language for Life
by Marshall B. Rosenburg

Puddle Dancer Press
Non Violent Communication
This is a really interesting read coloured with poems (example - averse below) - it is about listening, by hearing what is being said and changing perceptions it is possible to turn conflict into mutual agreement easily. This use of effective language creates a world of respect, something which is often felt as missing in today's relationships. A great read, which has been already put into action in my therapy room.  My thanks to Malcolm Proops  who recommended this book and discipline to me.

One verse - my favourite verse is about the cook!

I've never seen a lazy man
I've seen a man who never ran
while I watched him, and I've seen
a man who sometimes slept between
lunch and dinner, and who'd stay
at home upon a rainy day,
but he was not a lazy man.
Before you call me crazy,
think, was he a lazy man or
did he just do things we label 'lazy'?
