News from Glasgow

Hi, I'm David Eadie and I am currently training on the Post Graduate Certificate in Clinical Hypnotherapy with the LCCH. This is a short story of m y journey so far. Have you ever wanted to do something for so long, and yet, ther e is some resistance within that prevents you taking that all important step, then when you do eventually go for it, it feels so natural that you wonder wh y it took you so long? Dare I assume we've all felt this type experience about s o mething in life? Well that pretty much sums up my own venture into the world of clinical hypnosis. I had been fascinated by hypnosis at a very young age when my mother took the family to see a stage hypnotist at the Pavilion Theatre in Glasgow. Although I can't remember exactly what the people on stage were doing, I do remember it being very funny and a lot of laughter in the audience. However, the most intriguing part that really captured my imagination was how it all worked, and what the people on stage were actually experiencing. From then on I delved in and out of learning about hypnosis, through reading books, and experiencing self hypnosis by listening to audio tapes my mother would buy. As I grew up the fascination stayed strong, although I never really believed it was something I could do as a profession and it seemed one of those things other, smarter, people than I should do. Fortunately, in 2009 I summoned up enough courage to almost book on the CPPD in Clinical Hypnosis with LCCH, however, not quite. Maybe the time just wasn't right, or maybe I still didn't really believe I could be a clinical hypnotherapist. Whatever the reason, I resisted what I really wanted to do and, instead, chose to take a course in Life Coaching. At least this was at least a step in the right direction, and I really enjoy coaching people to make positive changes in their lives but, on a more personal level, I still hadn't satisfied my curiosity. So in 2010 I finally took the plunge and signed up for the CPPD course. After one visit to the Harvest Clinic, to make my application, I left thinking, "What was the big fuss?" I met Marion, who put me at ease right way, and from then on I couldn't wait until the course started. I wasn't disappointed. Angela Trainer was the course tutor and made it the most enjoyable learning experience ever had, bar none! The supervisors were the loveliest people you could ever wish to meet and the other students were a pleasure to become acquainted with. The whole group bonded very quickly and I can honestly say I feel lucky to have been part of it. Strangely enough, when it came around to applying for the Post Graduate Certificate course I had to overcome an internal resistance once again. Thankfully I'm getting much better at that! When I previously thought about training as a hypnotherapist I only ever considered how the training would help me to help others. I have to say the course provides so much more. It has been a real journey of self learning and I'm finding out more and more about myself on each weekend. Furthermore, I was recently given the opportunity to gain one week's work experience as trainee practice manager at the Harvest Clinic. I love it in there. Everyone who works there is so warm and friendly it's hard not to love it. I was made to feel really welcome by everyone and would be more than happy to work there again, if they'll have me. I would say I've enjoyed some amazing experiences in my life, and doing this course is definitely right up there with the best. Inner Peace!
Meet our new model for our advertising campaign - Inner Peace - it bears a striking resemblance to Corrie (R.I.P.) Angela and Grahams dog!
Reminder - it's still not too late to book on Angela's Clinical Supervision group, open to all Hypnotherapists or PG Cert students who have completed up to weekend 8. From any background. The Supervision group will be run every 8 weeks.
Sadly we had to cancel the practitioner course, we where only 2 short of requirements but will be running this course in June 2012 so book early.
Reiki development day is on Sunday 6th November at Angela's home. This day is open to all no matter where you trained. Refresh and reconnect with your Reiki. Re-attunments will be given on the day.

Volunteers Wanted to Trial a New Therapy Programme Michelle Hague is looking for volunteers to trial a new therapy programme, for one week in October and one week in November, with follow ups and feed back requested. Applicants should be people who have been diagnosed with linked psychosomatic illness ie Irritable Bowel, Chronic Fatigue/ ME, reactive depression or loss etc and who have been unable to get out of the cycle and feelings, and emotions - so far. It doesn't matter if CBT or CBH, Hypnosis or Clinical Hypnosis has been tried in the past, this is different. This new way of working; "puts everything together and joins up all the dots". Michelle says "Based on my years of successful clinical practice and experience in and out of the clinic and in and out of the classroom, when individuals slipped through the therapy net, I know that something else is needed, I have spent a long time working on this project, and I am ready now to try to help others using it, but to be sure I have got it right, I need to test it and work with a few people, who will be free to feed back exactly what they think." Everything, is based upon safe practice, is client centred and solution focused. If you or someone you know is ready to do it differently, contact me for an application form. Training in this - will follow next year all being well. Location - Coombe Lane Clinic, Axminster, Devon. For an application form: Applicants please email michelle@haguemail.co.uk Or write to Michelle Hague Coombe lane Clinic Unit 2 Coombe Lane Axminster EX13 5AS
Something New LCCH Exeter is planning something new! Look out for the Access to Hypnosis Courses. Details will be available soon! Self Hypnosis in Dentistry. In November 2010, the day before a flight out to Malaysia, I broke my tooth! To cut a long story short it could not be saved, and there was not enough tooth left to crown, my options upon my return were to have it removed to have some bridge work done or to undergo a procedure known as implant surgery. After a discussion with the referred dental surgeon to assess my suitability for implant surgery, the subject of my profession cropped up. I am sure you are all familiar by now with the type of conversation, and his intrigue and interest culminated in a question. "Do you practice what you teach?" What could I say but "yes"! It was later in May 2011 that I sat in the dental chair and realised the enormity of what I had said. We agreed some emergency signals if I decided to take the local anaesthetic sitting ready on the side, just in case. He asked how I would utilise trance and I said I would be using my favourite place, and described the beautiful island off of the coast of Greece. Thoughtfully he put on some mood music. After giving me some time to slip in to trance, we set to the removal of the old broken tooth and the 1st stage of the implant. I have learned many things about hypnosis, about myself, and about pain, and recovery: Firstly, it works! I knew it would. Didn't feel a thing - with the exception of the stitching that occured at the end where I did feel some discomfort that I successfuly ameliorated. Secondly, the post-surgery period was uncomfortable and needed some hypnotic work to get me through it (the discomfort was worse every time I laughed, when it pulled on the stitches in the soft tissue of my gum). Thirdly, hypnosis helps reduce bruising and swelling. The bruising and swelling that I was warned would be significant was hardly evident. I drove to Birmingham the afternoon after the surgery and taught a Masterclass with my dear friend and colleague Lorraine Rowlands the next day and had a bit of an adventure along the way (a euphamism for the stress of having our car break down!). The swelling was minimal and the class didn't notice at all. Fourthly, healing time improved. I had been warned that healing could take two weeks to occur. However, I was brushing my teeth and implant on the Tuesday 4 days later, gums healed! I am now awaiting the second stage, and will report more fully once the reconstruction is finished. Michelle Hague News from the South West Support Group Reminder for the next support meeting in Tuanton. A busy time of the year! The last CPPD group having taken their exams on the 14th August. These are now well into the marking process and students are encouraged to keep an eye on their UWL accounts for the results. If you have any problems with navagating the UWL system get in touch and I will sort it out.
In other news the first formal essays from the PgCert group have gone through the initial marking stages and all I can say right now is as things stand I'm very proud of you all, and once you've stopped smiling remember you have a case study and psychodynamics assignment to do between now and the 4th of February .... not as long as it sounds. No seriously, it is not as long as it sounds! Which brings us to the new group of CPPD students about to launch into their training, and new careers as hypnotherapists. I'm looking forward to seeing you all 9.30 Saturday 15th October in the Attwood building of Birmingham City University - north campus (That's Perry Barr). Come straight to the Attwood building and you will find me easily enough. The examination process has been changed slightly since some of you received your notes, which is certainly to your benefit and I will go through it with you on your first weekend. See you all soon. News from Southeast Asia

The following is reprinted from the New Straits Times article by Looi Sue-Chern: The London College of Clinical Hypnosis (LCCH) (Malaysia) and Prima Link, a local training and consultancy provider, is promoting hypnosis to boost safety and health at workplace. The approach, relatively new in Penang and the northern states, will present a new perspective to employers in tackling issues related to stress experienced by employees that can potentially affect productivity at the workplace. LCCH Asia-Australia principal Sheila Menon said LCCH, in collaboration with Prima Link, would be sponsoring, annually, one student who represents a community service facility or non-governmental organisation for its three-month Certificate in Clinical Hypnosis Training programme which starts from Sept 29. "We will consider applicants who can explain how hypnosis skills can be applied for the benefit of the community they serve," she said.
The part-time programme, which will be conducted on weekends at Sunway Hotel in Seberang Jaya, will introduce students to hypnosis, providing them with a foundation for both personal and professional development. Students are required to submit written assignments and sit for an examination at the end of the programme. Upon completion, successful students will be awarded the certificate, which is also recognised by the Academy of Family Physicians Malaysia. Those interested in pursuing hypnosis at a higher level can obtain the Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis and Practitioners Diploma in Clinical Hypnosis.
Sheila said the Royal Society of Medicine in Britain recently recommended that clinical hypnosis be made widely available because of its benefits in reducing health problems related to stress. She said clinical hypnosis in the country was available at the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani, the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur and several centres in Penang such as the Ong Specialist and Counseling Clinic, Loh Guan Lye Specialist Centre and the LCCH Therapy Centre (Penang) is at Midland Park Centre. For details, contact Prima Link at 04-324 4860 or LCCH at 03-7960 6439, or visit www.hypnosis-malaysia.com. |

A Review of a 2 day seminar with Dr. Dan Siegel
| |
Dr Dan Siegel is currently a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine, he is also on the faculty of the Centre for Culture, Brain and Development and the Co-Director of the Mindful Awareness Research Centre at UCLA. He has lectured for the King of Thailand, Pope John Paul II and His Holiness The Dalai Lama.
He made his second visit to London this year on 9th and 10th September last and gave a two day intensive seminar entitled "Applying Interpersonal Neurobiology to Clinical Technique". Put simply it means examining the interface of human relationships and basic biological processes and applying it in therapy.
I have been interested in Mindfulness and have practised it fitfully for many years and have encouraged my clients in the practise. It is congruent with hypnotherapeutic work: how better to spot that you are in a symptomatic trance state than by practising awareness of what you are doing in the present moment? It resonates with CBH as it advocates meta-cognition, thinking about your thinking. What I didn't fully understand before attending Dr Siegel's seminar is that it actually changes the structure of the brain in ways that promote integration and mental health and wellbeing.
The topics covered over the two days included
(1) An integrative approach to therapeutic intervention.
(2) How clinicians approach assessment using mindsight and integration.
(3) Treatment planning: rethinking intervention in the light of neuroplasticity
(4) Using the power of awareness and attention to catalyze neural integration
.
(5) The function of relationship in neural integration.
(6) Transformation; Interpersonal and temporal domains of integration.
You might think it doesn't sound like a bundle of laughs but you'd be wrong, Dr Siegel's blend of erudition, inclusiveness, humanity and humour made the seminar an unforgettable experience and an invaluable CPD. I strongly recommend you check out his website by clicking here.

Why Pay for Scientific Articles When Many are Free?
| Not everyone who reads this has access to University data bases and library facilities. This can prove frustrating and more than a little expensive when trying to source research material from scientific journals. Anyone who has tried will have encountered the ubiquitous "You can buy this article for £..." message that prompts you for your credit card details as a prelude to a hefty payment. However, with a bit of patience you can reap the benefits of some judicious searching on the internet and find that there are in fact many sources of free journal articles.
Your first port of call is of course Google. But not just any Google; rather, you should be using Google Scholar. Here you can search for any subject and it will weedle out the personal websites and those advertising dubious hypnosis products leaving you with a list of sites holding articles on the subject you have been searching. If you look to the right of each found search item, where you see "[PDF] from...." this indicates a potential free copy of the article. Simply click to download. Another good place to look is PubMed. To the left of the search bar at the top of the home page there is a drop-down menu that is set to 'PubMed' by default. Click on this and scroll down the menu until you find 'PMC'. This is PubMed Central, a searchable database of free articles. A search on 'hypnosis' alone came back with over 3600 articles.
Finally, what about free journals? There are more out there than you think. Thankfully links to these have been gathered together in the Directory of Open Access Jounals, an extensive searchable database designed to increase the visibility of free scientific and scholarly journals.

The LCCH Supports the Drive to Improve Youth Literacy
|

A study by academics at Dundee University has shown that the reading ability of young people in Britain is falling well behind that of those in other European countries. 150,220 children in primary and secondary schools were quizzed by researchers from the education firm Renaissance Learning over their understanding of particular texts. This comes less than a year after a study by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) showed that British teens fell from 17th to 25th most literate in the world. Published World, a division of the media company Allan Dodgeon Ltd., is a new literacy programme designed to encourage and promote reading and writing. Owner Allan Dodgeon says "with so much incredible literature available our aim is to really promote how exciting books are and to bring the nations youth into a world of reading, a world where there are literally no limitations to imagination. Our site http://www.publishedworld.com lists all the latest fiction reads for young readers that we feel they should know about." A unique cash-back facility is also available to schools. For every purchase made on the website a percentage cash-back is provided to the purchasers school. To see if your child's school is on board the scheme visit http://www.publishedworld.com/index.php?page=myschool If it isn't, then they can join for free by emailing schools@publishedworld.com Published World is not a charity but is a programme designed to support reading and writing to younger people. Bill Frost: Script Summary Database LCCH Lecturer Bill Frost has developed a database of approx 100 core hypnotherapeutic inductions, deepeners and techniques at CPPD/Certificate and PGCert/Diploma levels. The searchable database includes bullet-point top-level summaries of scripts, style / type, suggested usage, contraindications, ethical issues, related cognitive behavioural / psychodynamic principles, hypnotic phenomena involved, associated theories of hypnosis and more. The database also contains a searchable list of several thousand references, a critical overview of the theories of hypnosis and an alphabetical index. The "Hypnotherapy Knowledgebase" is available via Neuro Innovations (www.neuroinnovations.com).
The "Hypnotherapy Knowledgebase" is designed for use by students when preparing essays and for use by qualified hypnotherapists when planning sessions. Given that database does not contain full scripts by design and only contains top level summaries an implicit prerequisite for use is that users must be hypnotherapy students or qualified hypnotherapists.

Film Review
|

Cary Charles reviews Youth Without Youth, available on DVD in the UK.
This recent Francis Ford Coppola film is based upon the novella of the same name by Mircea Eliade, defined by a restrained and elegant visuals, and superbly acted by 'Lie To Me' actor Tim Roth amongst others. Embedded with multiple metaphors, this is the story of an elderly professor whose life-work is tracing consciousness back to its absolute origins, as expressed by language. Sadly, he is elderly yet only half done. Then, on one fateful night he emerges from a bar during a rain storm, and is struck by lightning, burned beyond recognition. Physicians are stunned upon finding that his body is regenerating. This fascinates the media and causes him to be sought for experimentation by Nazis. Eventually, he gains an extended life in which he soon meets a woman who lapses in and out of trance, each time vocalising a language more obscure than the last, possibly from past lives. Glimpses are also made of another intelligent 'part' and each time he moves towards unconscious awareness, the director rotates the camera upside down with beautiful effect. The 'part' utters a metaphorical question about the viewer's own personal quest for insight and fulfilment, using roses as a sign of proof: '. . . And the third rose . . . Where would you like me to place the third rose?' The professor's eventual answer is incredibly moving and may cause a few tears. A film far too deep too capture a mainstream blockbuster seeking audience, 'Youth Without Youth' rewards repeated viewing with new layers of realisation. Simply profound - exquisite film-making at its best.
