Greetings!
Welcome to the March issue of the LCCH News as we bring you news from our centres around the world. We are particularly pleased to welcome to Tess Serrano who has taken over the running of our Portugal centres. We would like to say a big thank you to Rusa Vilardebó who is stepping down from the fantastic job she has done over the past years in setting up and running our Portugal centres. Luckily for our Portuguese students she will continue to be part of the lecturing team imparting her extensive expertise and knowledge.

LCCH Graduate Authors

It was gratifying to walk into a book shop the other day and see a prominent display of books written by LCCH graduates. On the shelves were Lisa Jackson's Adore Yourself Slim, Steve Miller's From Fat to Fit, and Mike Bryant and Peter Mabbutt's Self-hypnosis for Dummies.

If you have written a book and would like us to feature it in the LCCH News then send the details to us at info@lcch.co.uk.

Let Us Know What You Are Up To
If you have featured in the media, or are involved in an interesting project and would like people to know about it then send details to your local centre manager or to us at info@lcch.co.uk and we will publish it in an upcoming issue of the LCCH News.

Gain New Business with Dental Practices

Working as a therapist managing dental phobia, anxiety and stress symptoms is considered a valuable addition to dental treatments. Patients with anxiety or phobias can be recognised and helped appropriately prior to and during dental treatments as can aspects of pain management to localised and operative pain.

On The Benefits of Clinical Hypnotherapy in Dentistry as Part of a Mutual and Professional Service Builder Masterclass Patrick Lucocq will present dental phobia and stress symptom cases with the subsequent hypnotherapy treatments undertaken discussed in full. There will be practical demonstrations and material to take back to the therapists practice.

Upon completion the therapist will be able to provide a protocol for building a professional relationship with a dental practice and be able to demonstrate the practical uses of hypnotherapy treatment and behavioural tools for dental anxiety and stress symptoms. This can be useful service for dental practices looking for new patients.

At the end of the workshop you will:

  • Be able to provide a protocol for building a mutual professional relationship with a dental practice.
  • Have appropriate treatments, timetable and measurement for dental anxiety including emetophobia and phagophobia.
  • Be able to use Clinical Hypnotherapy as an adjunct to sedation.
  • Be able to identify, where appropriate, when to refer back to the dentist.
  • Have a new set of approaches that will enhance your general private practice.

About the lecturer

Patrick works as a clinical hypnotherapist with a special interest in dental anxiety and stress treatments. With over 15 years' experience of the dental industry Patrick is well placed to combine his dental knowledge with hypnotherapy and behavioural management.

Patrick's use of hypnotherapy and behavioural management prior to, during and after dental treatment has evolved into a protocol providing therapists and members of the dental team with good practice tools. His experience and treatment of dental anxiety and stress has made him a sought after speaker for the British Dental Association and other professional groups.

Focus on Advanced Induction Techniques

Masterclass

Advanced Techniques Benefit Both Patient and Therapist

Conversational inductions can be of benefit to the nervous patient and utilise real time cues and experience to pace and lead in to the desired response in a gradual process. This technique is based on Ericksonian language patterns and can be used in a natural way towards the end of taking a case history.

The aim of an overload induction is to occupy as much of the executive system or critical faculty as possible through mental tasks, sensory input and verbal suggestion. The highly analytical or vigilant patient's awareness can be occupied to the extent pacing and leading to a desired response is possible before experiencing the relief of letting go at the appropriate time.

Rapid inductions serve as a convincer and facilitate the trance to be, then deepened appropriately. Not all patients respond to the relaxation model of inducing hypnosis and many patients are not entirely convinced of their experience of the trance state. Distraction creates confusion and confusion creates distraction, allowing a window of opportunity to then lead your patient directly in to a desired response.

These approaches to inducing trance can be practiced and developed under the guidance of Darren Roscoe on the Advanced Induction Techniques Masterclass. Working in a safe environment to build confidence in your abilities, this workshop is open to all who have an interest in developing and honing their induction skills no matter how experienced they already are. If you are new to hypnotherapy the day will give a powerful set of tools that will enhance your practice.

Dear Friends

Happy spring!  The birds are starting to sing and the daffodils and crocuses are well on their way now: hope, colour, new life.  This has been a challenging winter in so many ways!

Many thanks for all the good wishes, cards and e-mails.   I found a marvellous Clinic in Austria which helped me "find the way" to treating my Fibromyalgia I now share my learning's on Auto Immune Disease/Gastro-Intestinal connection/Ill Health/Weight and Detox in "The Mayr Day" which we are representing in May this year.  Last time we were over booked, so if you couldn't get on last time, now's your chance!

The day before I'm running "There's Nothing Wrong With You" based on Zen Therapy applied to Childhood Conditioning Issues.  It's always been a well received day.  Both Masterclasses are held at my home in the beautiful countryside outside Condorrat and being May we can hope to share lunch in the garden and enjoy the birdsongs and views (..Ahem! well, maybe)

As numbers are limited to 12 please book in good time.  Again I appreciate that finances are pushed.  If you'd like to come and can offer a commitment to "eventual payment" we are flexible.  Post dated cheques are fine in a way that suits you, if presented on the day.

One of our students, Sandra Kennedy, passed over last year from cancer. Sandra "the bonny wee fighter" surpassed all expectations and not only completed her certificate on chemo (...which we didn't think she would) then started her Diploma (...we didn't post her deposit because we didn't think she'd make it!) but completed her Diploma and was giving the thumbs up 3 days before she died to attending the Mayr Day in November whilst on oxygen.  She was an inspiration to us all and donated all her books to our "library" for future students.  We have now set up "The Sandra Kennedy Bursary" which means on every course The Harvest Clinic runs, we will offer one free place to anyone who applies in writing with financial difficulty caused through ill health or life challenging problems.  It's not a means test, just an honest request.  It will be on a first come basis. "Courses" cover Masterclasses, Residentials , (not accommodations) and all Reiki training.  Apply in writing to the Harvest Clinic.

Anyone looking for a therapy room?  We have a room available on a Monday 9.30-5pm and a Thursday 9.30-2pm.  We will help you build your own client base and of course we will do our best to support you.  We offer Business Consultation and full Reception management.  The rental fee is very competitive and only monthly in advance, no deposit.  Call Marian or Morag if interested.

If you are seriously interested in upgrading your skills as a therapist of any discipline, or improving your skills as a parent, carer, helper, friend, have you considered Reiki? It changes the way I viewed the therapeutic, helper relationship for life.  Given the way the world is unfolding in the ego  self dynamic and all the relevant damage, it is even more needed as a skill.  The planet has never needed it more!  The issues of personal dynamics, grounding and protection, energy fields and their implications and the power of positive energy are all addressed as well as the fundamentals of healing, whether physical, emotional or spiritual. (It is not whacky new-age nonsense,  as I originally thought, its Quantum Physics!) To this end we are offering a £25 gift voucher redeemable against any Reiki training throughout 2011.  It will improve your skills no matter what your discipline and give you the "language" to work on another level without burning out, drying up in the process.  Wish I'd known about it during the first fifteen years! Again all courses held in the Countryside, with fires, Wishing tree, the Standing stone," home baking" (Ha, Ha!) and laughs around the table, all taught in Glaswegian, not hippy speak!

If you want to get better at what you do, why not upgrade? Our Hypnotherapy trainings are now taught at Post Graduate Degree Level! Wooo!, but it's true.  We were the first in Europe to bring the world of Hypnosis into Academia. We are constantly and never endingly improving and boy does it open doors!  If you trained a year of two ago, you wouldn't recognise the course now! Why not upgrade and get on board as a Supervisor so you can re-train free of charge on the Certificate or Diploma course.  Its fresh, new and challenging.  We are looking for people from September to commit to 4 weekends (certificate) or 12 weekends Diploma/PG cert 2012 and an 80% commitment is required.  It's a real opportunity!

Work Experience Opportunity! Can you give us a week of your time at the Clinic, and we'll give you week of our time, training you in behind-the scenes practice management of running a busy clinic.  Practical Hands on Training on walk in and phone enquiries, setting up, e-mail enquiries, admin, meet and greet, watching therapist's in action (before and after).  Everyone who has done it said  it was an invaluable experience.  Once done if we are looking for reception cover due to holidays or sickness, we would offer you the chance of paid work, so to this end we obviously prefer those who have a lot of free time or work part-time.  You'd learn a lot, update skills and have some fun! Let us know.

News From Exeter

Exeter Cathedral

Dear Colleagues,

As we settle in to 2011, there is a lot of planning going on down in Devon, and the South West.

The CPPD is beginning to slowly fill up and we look forward optimistically to the numbers growing in strength.

In June we will be promoting the LCCH at an event aimed at recruiting new students, with introductory workshops, talks and some experienced past students available to help answer questions. My thanks to all those PgCert students who have offered their help for the Newton Abbot show. More news of this to follow in the next news letter, and of course  you would all be most welcome to attend.

As our PgCert Students, are preparing for their practical exam, and finishing off their case studies, it would be nice to take this opportunity to wish them all well.

Lessons From Self Disclosure

Experienced as we all are, or become, it is never too late to learn from those whom practice and understanding has taught some of its lessons.

I was reminded last year of this by a fellow practitioner of many years practice, and much my senior.  We gathered (as we often do) down in Exeter, for an informal peer supervision session, to share, drink coffee and learn from each other, to support and to help, but also for mutual companionship.

During this meeting she told me her story, with a wise woman's observation, that I should share it if ever I was given the chance, so that others may learn from it too.

A returning client had been in contact recently, with a new presenting condition.  A year or so had passed since she had seen him last and he had been making great progress, and all had been well with the original presenting condition which had been a tablet taking habit, and as time had progressed all was assumed to be well.  This is the first lesson, assume nothing.

As there was no mention of the past presenting symptom it was not discussed assuming that it could cause embarrassment.

Because it was a retuning client the information gathered at the first meeting was briefly checked as accurate, and then the details of the new presenting symptom were taken. He now presented for smoking cessation, with no disclosed medical conditions, a straightforward case.

To cut a long story down to the point, upon leaving the therapist remarked on how well the client was looking and congratulated him on having done so well, and commentated in passing that in the past she too had had an issue with self medication and had recovered.  This last lesson is the real lesson to be learned here. In our efforts to build rapport we must be mindful of not stepping across the line, to refrain from explicit self disclosure, which may leave us vulnerable or be misinterpreted.

This case, did indeed escalate, the client took a complaint to the appropriate body, and reports were filed, in this case, the therapist was found not to have done anything wrong, but to have been ill advised to disclose in this way to someone who, it turned out  - was a registered but undisclosed drug addict.

Lesson  1. Never Assume

Lesson  2. Always take a full case history - and check past presenting conditions.

Lesson 3. When building rapport, be mindful of protecting yourself - self disclosure can expose your own vulnerability and potentially damage the very thing you are working so hard to create.

Lesson 4.  Good Supervision is always helpful (for everyone, irrespective of how experienced you are). Both formal and informal supervision have their place, as we work in an isolated field and  it is good to have the opportunity to share.

Best wishes,

Michelle

We have, happily, been very busy in Portugal. Since taking over the reins of LCCH Portugal from Rosário Vilardebó in November last year,  we have put up a new website, and tried to keep the faculty happy and informed about the small changes we have been making. Following the normal preparatoy work, in January we started two Certificate courses, one in Lisbon and one in Porto. I am very pleased to say that attendance for both has been very good, and the feedback has been excellent. The students seem to be loving the teachers, and the course.

Graduation Ceremony

We would like to congratulate all our students who have recently sat their exams. Successful students of the Postgraduate Certificate Clinical Hypnotherapy course were invited to attend TVUs graduation ceremony at the university to accept their awards. TVU are planning to hold the next ceremony in November, so those students coming up for graduation from all our centres should keep an eye on both their personal and TVU emails for when the dates are announced.

LCCH graduate Jacqueline Van der Voort was featured in episode 4 of Channel 4's Embarrassing Bodies. She was shown using hypnotherapy to successfully treat a patient who has cervical dystonia. The outcome was that the patient stopped letting the dystonia interfere with his day-to-day life and that his cervical dystonia dramatically reduced.

Talking about her patients success, Jacqueline said "...his insomnia is gone. He used to suffocate in his pillow through the night because of his neck, spasms and that has 100% gone. His depression has completely lifted, as has his anger and midlife crisis. His anxiety and social isolation have gone too. And importantly his dystonia has reduced by at least 50%, sometimes more, and he has lost his self-consciousness..."

Hopefully Jaq and her patients success will inspire others affected by all types of dystonia to seek out treatment using hypnotherapy whilst at the same time letting the medical profession see that there is another viable option to help treat this often challenging condition.

"Out Limp the Tiger ... and in come bouncy Rabbit"
A story of self-hypnosis from our Singapore Centre

The last Chinese Lunar year was that of the Tiger. It was a fine year for our Singapore centre and I am proud to say that Diploma 2 graduated in the Tiger year and we have some very fine clinical hypnotherapists providing excellent work at the LCCH Singagpore centre.

I am especially fond of the Tiger Zodiac since it is also my lunar calendar year. However I can feel that the year of the Rabbit will also be a fine year. I was cleaning a huge pane of glass in my alter room on the last days of the Tiger Year when our bouncy frisky Rabbit made itself known. Somehow that extra energy ricochetted around the room and the huge pane came loose and crashed to the floor, slicing through my leg at the ankle and tearing a huge gash down to the bone.

Well the old tiger may be limping out but we are made of stern stuff. Without even thinking about it I put myself into self-hypnosis and reached down and pushed back the dangling flesh above the ankle bone. I applied a compress still in trance and stopped the breathing. In a calm and dissociated state I sat back and relaxed. Just calm... and relaxxxxed ... waiting for my wife to send me to the clinic.

Remaining completely in control at the clinic I told the doctor to attend to another patient. I used the time to deepen the trance and five minutes later when the doctors started his 20 minute task of cleaning and stitching the wound, I was in my favourite place of relaxation without pain killers. Ten stitches later I was up and limping my way back home. Needless to say the wound knitted and healed quickly with no secondary infection. My leg is still in bandages at the time of writing this. Self-hypnosis works and who says it doesn't!!!!

Tony Chuah, Centre Manager, Singapore
A big thank you to Tony Chuah for limping his way across Singapore in the line of duty to explain clinical hypnosis to two new students. And a warning to us all that the Rabbit this year is frisky.

News From Manchester and Leeds
Manchester and Leeds

In the Manchester and Leeds centres we are receiving many enquiries from mature students looking for a life change. They are either dissatisfied with their present jobs or worried about being made redundant and so wish to broaden their horizons and increase their options. If you have ever read the book 'Who Moved my Cheese?' you will realise why it is important to continue to evaluate your options and make those contingency plans before you are dragged along, suffering the consequences of decisions that are out of your control.

My advice to those prospective students who are not sure about their future, is to sign up now. I wasted 10 years 'thinking about it' and now wish I had been brave enough to embrace change much sooner.

With best wishes,

Amanda

Stage Hypnosis - A Salutary warning!

It was opening night at the Civic Centre and The Amazing Cowboy Hypnotist was topping the bill. People came from miles around to see the famed hypnotist do his stuff. As the Cowboy Hypnotist took to the stage, he announced, "Unlike most stage hypnotists who invite two or three people up onto the stage to be put into a trance, I intend to hypnotize each and every member of this audience." The excitement was almost electric as the Cowboy Hypnotist withdrew a beautiful antique pocket watch from his his coat.

"I want you each to keep your eye on this antique watch. It's a very special watch. It has been in my family for six generations. "Then he began to swing the watch gently back and forth while quietly chanting, "Watch the watch, watch the watch, watch the watch ..."
The crowd became mesmerized as the watch swayed back and forth, light gleaming off its polished surface. "Watch the watch, watch the watch" he continued "and you will do exactly what I say, do exactly what I say ..."

Hundreds of pairs of eyes followed the swaying watch, until suddenly it slipped from the hypnotist's fingers and fell to the floor, breaking into a hundred pieces.

"Crap!" said the Cowboy Hypnotist.

... It took weeks to clean up that theater!
