Volume XII, Issue 11

Mary lives in a metropolitan area of 6 million people. She's a strong Christian and looks for opportunities to help others. One day she discovers a coworker, Laura, in financial trouble. Mary prays and believes God wants her to give Laura some money. It's a sizeable sum that she knows Laura will refuse.?

So Mary goes to a grocery and purchases a money order, making sure her name is not shown. Then she writes an encouraging note on a card, being careful not to sign it, and places the money order inside. With mailing information from her work's directory, she then mails the card with no return address.

Many days pass. Mary looks for a sign that Laura has received her card, but there's nothing. Then she discovers a horrible mistake -- Laura has not lived at that address for seven years. Mary considers going to the house and asking whoever may live there to return her card. But why would they? There's nothing to prove she sent it. Upset that her effort to bless her friend has failed, she asks God for help.

George and Helen are a kind couple who have lived in their current house for the past seven years. One day Helen picks up her mail and finds a letter to the previous owner. She begins to mark it "Return to Sender" but there's no return address. Perplexed, she prays and asks God what she should do. Helen's more than a little surprised when she senses Him telling her to open the envelope.

She carefully pulls out a card and reads a wonderful note to a friend needing help. Inside is a large money order. Helen doesn't know where the previous owner lives, but she's determined to find a way to return this card. Then she notices on the money order the name of a grocery along with a store number.

Helen calls the grocery's corporate office and locates the store that issued the money order. She then calls the store manager, explains what has happened, and asks if he can help. But with no name to go on, he assures her there is nothing he can do. Later that day, he gets an idea.

Pulling the security tapes for the date the money order was issued, he searches each instance one was purchased. He can easily see the money order numbers and in time has a picture of Mary buying the very one Helen described. But all he has is a picture...nothing else. Then he gets another idea. Maybe this lady has used the services of the bank located in the store.

He shows the 3 tellers the picture and they immediately recognize Mary. She has no account there...but her mother does. They contact her, explain the situation, and get Mary's telephone number. So they call Mary and give her Helen's number. A few days later, George and Helen arrive at the grocery and return the card and money order to Mary. She tries to give them a reward, but they refuse, just happy to have helped. Then Mary delivers the card and money order to Laura...exactly at the moment it was needed.

This is a true story. An amazing mixture of luck and coincidence? Let's count. From Mary learning of Laura's troubles through mailing the card to an old address -- 11. From George and Helen living in Laura's former house through Helen being determined to return the card and money order -- 12. From Helen discovering the issuer of the money order through the final delivery to Laura -- 17.

That would be 40 incidences of random luck and coincidence involving 3 businesses as well as 8 people out of a potential 6 million. Mary, Helen, George, the store manager, the tellers, and certainly Laura were all simply fortunate. Or perhaps there's more to it. Perhaps they were...blessed.

I believe there's someone with power and abilities beyond what we can image, who is involved in the world He created. At times an extraordinary event occurs, contrary to the laws, routines, powers, and expectations of nature and humans in this world. That wonderful, marvelous act is the supernatural work of God. Without Him, it doesn't happen.

I believe in miracles. Do you?

Take care & be God's,
