What's the meaning of God's life? You probably have an odd look on your face right about now. But before you try to answer, make sure you understand the question. At times our assumptions lead us down the wrong path because we don't understand what is being asked. The same can be true here. To answer this question, we must first understand life and meaning.
Life is often thought of only as that interval between birth and death, a fairly restrictive definition that relies on a beginning and an end. But life goes much further. It is the physical, mental and spiritual experiences, knowledge and understanding that constitute the existence of a living being. So God's life, then, is His existence which we can know through His actions, communication and presence.
But what is life if there is no meaning? Meaning is defined as one's intention or goal. When used in regard to a person's life, meaning is the core substance or inner significance that gives life purpose and direction, which is usually communicated to another.
So our question becomes, What is the intention or goal of God's actions, communication and presence that demonstrate the central purpose and direction of His existence? We're not considering merely a beginning or an end, but the question: What's the point of it all? Now that we better understand the question, we have the answer...right? Well, maybe there's something else we need to know.
And that, I'm sure you've already figured out, is the nonspatial continuum in which events occur in apparently irreversible succession from the past through the present to the future, measured essentially by selecting a regularly occurring event, such as the sunrise, and counting the number of occurrences during an interval. Too technical? Then let's just call it time.
Time places events in order...past, present and future. So an event has happened, is happening or will happen. For example, you've already read half of this wonderful Note - a past event. You're reading these words now - a present event. And if you want to discover the meaning of God's life, you will read a bit more - a future event. The continuing nature of past, present and future is what we mean by time.
Congratulations. You now understand the nonspatial continuum. (I would go into the whole space-time continuum thing but that would take another paragraph and I'm out of space and time.) But what could this possibly have to do with the meaning of God's life? Everything! In his letter to Titus, Paul began,
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God's elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness-a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time, and at His appointed season He brought His word to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior... (Titus 1:1-3)
"...a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time..." Before there were events and happenings. Before there were seconds, hours, days, months and years. Before there was time itself, there was God and there was purpose and direction to His existence. That purpose and direction was founded on the faith, knowledge, truth and hope flowing through Jesus, the Word of God, and His promise of eternal life to...you!
The meaning of God's life - the declared purpose of His being and the direction of His very existence - is to spend forever with you. He knew it, planned it, and wanted it...from the very moment before time.
Kinda changes the way you should feel about yourself, huh?
