While I fully expect and anticipate God to be in my life, I never cease to be amazed when I discover just how active He is. Here's a God story.
My book--The Company--will be released in a few months. It's the story of people saved from terrible suffering and their promises to those who saved them. One character, Sam, must work through self doubt and fear as he's called upon to stand up to those in authority. The first chapters set the stage. A horrifying event occurs, setting off a chain reaction that results in widespread death, destruction and despair.
The publishing process is an interesting one. I'm always learning new ways to write, meeting new friends, and looking into the latest tools of the trade in fields completely foreign to me...marketing and publicity. One such tool is the trailer, usually a two to three minute video to promote the book.
I've never had anything like that before, but the idea of one for The Company was exciting...sorta. Sure, having a mini-movie of the book would be neat, but what would it look like? Silly? Cartoonish? How could they get to the essence of the story in 2 minutes? Would there be actors or voiceovers?
Jacob, my designated go-to video guy, knows his stuff, obviously works well with odd authors, and at least gives the appearance of getting my sense of humor. Shortly after I suggested he use Liam Neeson for some voice work, I was hearing from others at the publisher about my wonderful suggestion, each ending with something to the effect of "Good luck with that."
Jacob sent samples for the background music, and while most didn't quite fit, one was promising. Eerie, foreboding. But not all those I tested it on liked it. The next sample set was OK, though none were better than in the first...except for #8. It was dynamic, exciting, and I was still humming it days later.
Everyone liked #8, but I couldn't figure out how it could possibly be used for the story of The Company. Then Jacob sent me the script to review. (Yes, there's a script.) The script approached the story from a unique angle, one I had never thought of, and...get this...perfectly matched the music of #8.
Several days later, I began to have doubts. Was this really the best piece? Is it over the top? What does God think? I had prayed about it, but never heard a voice or had a burning bush incident. The main thing I've always wanted is that this book and everything about it be to His glory. So I worried a bit.
One morning I was working in my basement office when suddenly #8 began to play. I have it on my computer, yet had done nothing to turn it on. Then I noticed...it was coming from upstairs. I hurried up and found my son Matt listening to some music on the Internet by a company that creates pieces for video trailers. Imagine that. Matt played one and, sure enough, it was #8.
Remember the first chapters of The Company? Death, destruction, despair. The name of the venture that produced #8 is Two Steps From Hell. Odd name, but it matches the beginning of the book. And remember the character Sam? The name of the piece from which sample #8 was taken is...Heart of Courage.
God is alive. He is with us...not in some nebulous, floating-in-the-sky kind of way. He's right by our side. He moves in our lives. He answers our prayers. What we must do is look and listen. Blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. (Matthew 13:16) Have a God story.
If you have a God story to share, send it to us. Who knows, you might encourage someone.
