Windblown Cross Country Skiing

Windblown Winter Weekly

Volume 11, Number 10

February 11, 2011

Dear Skiers and Snowshoers,

Three years ago I was approached by Jim Stock and Frank Edelblut about taking over Windblown to continue recreational cross-country skiing here and to establish a non-profit organization to train Olympic caliber athletes. I was not quite ready to be put out to pasture.

Then the ice storm of December 12, 2008 dealt an emotional blow by taking away forty years of forest management. I was ready to move on. We were able to re-open half of the trails that winter while the non-profit got organized, planned for the future, and produced literature. Many of you have made pledges. Jim and Frank and members of the board gave time and money to make it happen. Large donors have not been found. Thank you for your pledges of support. Thanks to Jim, Frank and all the people who worked to make Central New England Nordic Council (CNENC) a reality.

Father and Son

It is time to make a new plan. I will be running Windblown next winter (to get my forty-year pin). Our son Andy has expressed a desire to take over after that. We will be looking at various ways to make that happen.

Phew! Back to skiing.  Another great weekend is fast approaching with packed powder/powder conditions here and all trails open. Our base just keeps getting deeper. It's 25" to 35" now. Three inches of new snow fell this week and occasional snow showers are expected on Sunday to keep the surface fresh. The temperatures will be warmer, in the lower 30's, with partly cloudy skies. Our Moonlight Ski Tour is on for Saturday night from 6 pm to 9 pm. - bring a headlamp just in case the moon plays hide-and-seek.

Looking forward to seeing you,

Al Jenks
