Windblown Cross Country Skiing

Windblown Winter Weekly

Volume 11, Number 7

January 21, 2011

Dear Skiers and Snowshoers,

It's hard to believe we're closing in on the fourth week of January already. It feels like the ski season has barely just begun, yet in reality it's mid-winter. Fortunately, the weather has been behaving most appropriately. Our base is deep now, all the trails are open and groomed, and we have a fresh powder surface for the weekend!

More precisely, our base is 12" to 24" plus 6" of new snow today with another 2" likely by noon. In other words, it's gorgeous! All 40 kilometers are open and will be freshly groomed for Saturday morning. When all the trails are groomed, 30 k have tracks set, 28 k are groomed for skating, and 6 k of the snowshoe/backcountry trails are groomed.

The best part about having a deep base (in my opinion) is that the upper trails on Barrett Mountain are calling out to experienced skiers. If you haven't ventured up there yet this season, you're in for a treat. The trees were thinned out significantly last summer, opening up grand views to the north and east. And the magnificent spruce at the top are still standing guard. If venturing that high is too much of a hike for you, try making the East View Crossover your goal. You can see for many miles from there and the ride down the ZigZag is my favorite.

Ski Orienteering On Saturday - Starts 10 am to Noon

For many years now, Aims Coney has been setting a Ski Orienteering course at Windblown, but it seems most years it's taken place on days with less-than-favorable conditions. Saturday will be a wonderful exception. Here's your chance to try a sport that's great for all ages and abilities. Orienteering exercises your brain as well as your muscles. Skier on the Teaching Field

It will be cold on Sunday which means if you want to get out and enjoy the beauty of winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoing will be the sports of choice  You'll want to add an extra layer or two. We have neck warmers and balaclavas for sale in the Ski Shop.

Time for me to get out and enjoy the gorgeous fresh snow that's gently falling as I write.

Cheers,

Irene
