Preparing Your Horses for Winter
by Mark A. Wallace, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVIM, Reidsville Veterinary Hospital
The cold weather is almost upon us and its time to think about what special care and precautions may be needed to keep our horses healthy through the winter. Most horses will handle the cold weather just fine but there are a few simple management changes that can help, especially with older horses.
Horses rely on us to provide adequate shelter and nutrition throughout the year and this becomes even more important during the winter. Horses should have access to covered shelter or at minimum a windbreak. In our climate, horses that have been allowed to grow a full winter hair coat may not need blanketing as long as they can get dry and out of the wind.
Remember to avoid tight fitting or heavy blankets in horses with a heavy hair coat as this can prevent hair from rising and reduce the natural insulating effect. For those horses that are showing during the winter it will be important to maintain a shorter coat. In addition to blanketing, the amount of daylight (photoperiod) has a direct effect on the hair growth cycle. To maintain a slick coat through the winter, lighting programs that offer 16 hours of light per day should be started in the early fall.
A common problem that is encountered during the colder months is decreased water consumption by horses. As water temperature lowers (especially below 450F), horses tend to drink less. It is important to remember that this decreased water intake occurs long before the water actually freezes. Decreased water intake along with removal of horses from pastures can lead to colic problems... Read the entire article here!

Can Your Pet Keep You Healthy?
by Jaime McLeod, Farmers' Almanac
North America has officially gone to the dogs; 39% of U.S. households own at least one dog, 33% have at least one cat, and the numbers in Canada are similar. That doesn't even cover all of the rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, lizards, snakes, turtles, mice, chinchillas, potbellied pigs, and other animal companions out there. Many animal lovers see their pets as bona fide members of the family. If you have pets, you may have even more reason to love your four-legged friends.
Results of a handful of medical studies done in recent years have shown that owning a pet can have a positive impact on a person's health. Here's a look at just some of the ways that our animal companions can promote wellness:
Stress Reduction: Study after study has shown that people who own pets are less likely to suffer from the ill effects of a stressful life than those who don't. Stroking, cuddling, or even talking to an animal releases endorphins, mood-enhancing chemicals in our bodies that fight off the harmful effects of stress. Because our relationships with pets are uncomplicated (unlike those with people) and free of judgment, we are able to be completely ourselves with our pets. This, in turn, promotes... Read More!

In addition to her love of music, Thompson has an intense passion for horses. Not only does she own and ride horses as often as she can, her love of horses show up in the songs she sings and writes. Thompson's mare Jane is a Breyer model, and she and Thompson have performed at many horse events together across the country. "My horses are my inspiration, my healers, and my teachers," Thompson says.
Thompson may not be a household name (yet), but in the music industry, she's well known and well respected. She has written hits for many of country music's top artists such as Reba McEntire, Jo Dee Messina, Sherrie Austin, and Little Texas. Her song "Settle Down Cinderella" is featured in the 20th Century Fox motion picture Dr. Doolittle 3. She has released several albums on her own label, and is now working on a new CD called "Icy Blue Heart."
"We are really thrilled to give this WHINNY to Templeton. She's got a very loyal following, and her music about her love for horses reaches a worldwide audience. And, that definitely helps the equine industry overall," states WHN executive director Catherine Masters.
"I'm thrilled and honored by this recognition from an incredible organization that does so much for so many," says Thompson.
