Howdy!

I have some great, inspiring stories for you this week about our members and the joy that they get from their four-legged friends. Michael Richardson has found strength through working with horses, and our friends at Bar W Guest Ranch are able to share their love of horses with their guests. Check out their stories here, and be sure to visit TheWesternVault.com to view our members' great inventory!

TheGiftoftheHorseMichael Richardson's "The Gift of the Horse"

Airing This Week on RFD TV

Michael Richardson

Michael Richardson's constant companion, the horse, has accompanied him on many journeys.  These experiences have enabled him to discover the potential within himself.  Michael invites the viewer to accompany him on this journey.

Michael was 20 years old and three weeks away from moving out west to work with other horsemen, pursuing his dreams of studying horsemanship.  Then one night, Michael and two friends were coming home from a roping, when he swerved suddenly to avoid hitting a deer, stunned by his headlights.  In that moment Michael's life changed forever.  Fortunately, his friends were thrown free of the vehicle.   Michael, however, experienced the full impact of the Jeep rolling over him, crushing his spine, his body, and his dreams.  The journey that followed, from being ambulatory to having a new "perspective", has taken Michael to unimaginable places and emotions.  Michael will take you with him to these places, as you explore the relationship between you and your horse.

Michael Richardson "Gift of the Horse" Steps to Softness

Michael learned that no matter what we face in life, we must persevere.  This is what has led him to become a better person and horseman.  His life experiences have enlightened his approach to communicating, which he shares in "The Gift of The Horse©."

After over thirty years of working with horses, Michael has evolved from not only using the common techniques of pressure and release to a more subtle approach that incorporates observation & body language, listening and communicating with the horse from the horse's perspective and understanding.  Michael's goal is to build a rapport between the human and the horse, offering a softness that is developed first in the mind and then through the body.  Michael's approach will lead the human to become more aware of their own expressions and body language, which is the primary language that the horse knows and understands.  This language is the cornerstone for more advanced work.

Michael RichardsonMichael's approach is based on belief in "engaging the mind before putting the body in gear". Each episode will reveal a unique aspect of his approach.  He will work at liberty, with halter and lead, and under saddle as applied to different aspects of horsemanship.  Michael does not teach a technique.  He teaches you to honestly communicate with your horse and yourself.

Season begins Tuesday Sept. 6 at 5:30pm ET

HorsebackRidingHorseback Riding in Montana

A Horseback Riding Experience That Will Last You a Lifetime

The Bar W has developed the most advanced and diverse equestrian program in the West. As you may have already guessed the Bar W Guest Ranch is a very horse oriented ranch with a diverse horseback riding program and some of the most experienced training available anywhere.

Bar W Guest Ranch

The Bar W offers exceptional horseback riding in the mountainous Montana terrain surrounding the ranch, the foothill country of the Rocky Mountain Front range, and the wide open prairie of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, in addition to our indoor and outdoor arenas. The Bar W is a horseman's dream.

In addition to the exciting and challenging ranch sorting and team penning in the arena, some cattle work is also available on the ranch.

Bar W Guest Ranch Horseback riding in the mountains is normally more deliberate, with attention paid to moving up and down in elevation while keeping an eye open for wildlife and the next spectacular view of the Rockies just ahead. Riding the foothills is generally a more aggressive, faster ride, moving through more open country with a trot or a lope thrown in. Many of the foothill rides are all day rides with lunch in a meadow.

Bar W Guest Ranch You'll begin to recognize names like the Flathead, the Two Medicine, Buffalo Bridge, and the Marias Rivers. Finally, when you horseback ride in the wide open prairie of the Blackfeet Reservation, you'll think you've arrived at heaven on earth! There may be no other place quite like it on the face of this earth- there really are "purple mountains majesty." Furthermore, if there are cattle to be moved that week, you'll be moving back in time to an era when life was difficult, but simple. No cell phones, faxes, e-mails, or palm pilots. Just horses, cattle, mountains, grass, your cowboy and cowgirl compadres, and you!
