Choosing the Right Trainer

To get started, I talked to Jason Cook of Broken J Equine Services about finding the right trainer. Whether a competitor or a weekend rider, a trainer can help with every aspect of horse ownership. Jason has put together some great tips about finding the right trainer for you.

Broken J Equine Services

In order to pick the right trainer, a rider must first know what he or she wants to accomplish and also have an understanding of their current skill level. Does your skill level range from arena competition to loping for the first time or somewhere in between? Do you want strictly arena work, or does trail peek your interest? Once an honest evaluation of your skill level has been made, hopefully by a third party, a list of what you want to accomplish, and a budget to match, can be put together.

Now it's time to start looking for a trainer. Here are a few tips to help you along the way- in no particular order of importance:

1) Start with friends who are riding. Who are thy seeing, and what are they working on? Do they match what you want?

2) If you are starting from scratch (no horse or experience), find a reputable stable and go visit.  Most horse enthusiasts love to help people!

3) Feed stores can also be a great source of information about trainers.

4) Once a trainer has been identified, make an appointment for a lesson or meeting. Try not to be overwhelmed with excitement when determining if this is the right trainer. Keep that same skeptical mind you have when buying a car.

5) Do the trainer's facilities meet your needs and, more importantly, the needs of your horse?

6) A special relationship will develop with the right trainer- a relationship between you and the trainer and, more importantly, between you, your horse, and the trainer.

7) Is the trainer in your budget? Don't sacrifice needs over wants. Remember- a horse has certain basic nutritional and medical requirements to take care of, also.

8) Maybe the most important of them all- HAVE FUN! It makes no difference what you are doing or accomplishing; if it's not fun, it's not worth it!

Gulf Coast 4 Star Trailer Sales

Dedicated to Producing the Highest Quality Aluminum Trailers Available

Another aspect of horse ownership is travel. With so much time spent on the road, finding the right trailer is key to feeling at home when you're away. I asked Jacob Lamprecht of Gulf Coast 4 Star Trailer Sales about finding the perfect trailer for your horse.

Gulf Coast 4 Star Trailers

At Gulf Coast 4 Star Trailer Sales, their primary concern is to educate customers on the right size trailer for their needs. Their goal is for customers to leave the lot feeling confident that their horses will be safe and comfortable during transportation. Jacob says, "Most of our customers have owned trailers and know what works for them; however, for those customers who are first time trailer owners, it is our responsibility to make sure they purchase the right trailer for their individual needs." Typically, a 15 hand horse will fit in a standard size trailer, but a 17 hand horse will not. "We have found that by asking a few questions, we can determine the right size trailer for our customers. For instance, we may ask what is the breed of the horse, how tall is the horse, does the customer prefer a straight load or a slant load, do they need a ramp, etc."

Gulf Coast 4 Star Trailers

Gulf Coast 4 Star knows that buying a trailer is a big investment. They want to make sure their customers know that their people care about your horses and want to make sure that your new trailer fits your needs.  Give Gulf Coast 4 Star a call toll-free at 877-543-0733, and one of their friendly sales people will assist you in finding the perfect trailer for your needs!

M.L. Leddy's

World Renowned Handmade Saddles

All horse owners know that getting the proper tack and equipment is crucial for both horse and rider. An ill-fitting saddle can cause problems for a horse's back and can effect how the animal moves. I talked to Mark Dunlap at M.L. Leddy's in Fort Worth, Texas, about creating the perfect saddle.

M.L. Leddy'sM.L. Leddy's starts their process of making custom saddles before they ever meet the rider. They start by creating a saddle tree that will be a firm foundation for the perfect saddle. All of the focus at this first stage of the process is on the horse. It's all about how the saddle fits on the horse's back. Mark says, "We have spent a lot of time in developing a tree that is exclusive to Leddy's. We have something unique that other saddle companies don't have." Leddy's saddles are tested by industry professionals to find the perfect tree specifications for saddles that are world renowned for excellence among trainers and professional horsemen.

The second phase of the saddle-making process is fitting the rider. A tree has been developed to fit the horse perfectly and to sit on its back seamlessly. Now, focus is turned to the rider. Everyone is different, so Leddy's fits each of its customers and alters their saddles to fit each individual perfectly. They make changes to the seat size, shape, and fenders to customize the saddle specifically to them.

 M.L. Leddy's

The final phase is the cosmetic aspect. Leddy's uses Hermann Oak Leather- the finest tannery in America- for all of their leather needs. Leddy's makes each piece by hand in their shop. The hardware that they do not make in house, such as the stirrups, cinches, and sterling silver adornments, are outsourced. Mark says, "We work with companies who are the best in their field to create the components that we don't build, in order to create the very best products in the world."

Nettles Country

Meticulously Designed Stirrups from NCHA Hall of Famer Ronnie Nettles

One piece of the saddle that is critical for comfortable, correct riding is the stirrup. Some 20 plus years ago, cutting horse trainer Ronnie Nettles searched for such a stirrup to assist him while riding, but he was unable to find one. Rather than give up, the NCHA Hall of Famer retreated to his workshop. There, relying on knowledge from 30 years in the saddle, as well as experience from his vast championships, he meticulously designed a stirrup to do more than just hold his foot.

Ronnie Nettles

Today, Nettles Stirrups are recognized as the premier stirrup in the industry. Using only the best materials, highly skilled craftsmen custom-make 11 Nettles styles now available in four sizes.  Laminated for extra strength, these remarkable stirrups won't warp or bow- two problems that move the foot off-center and hamper good riding.

Nettles Stirrups will integrate "feel" into your ride- something only a Master Horseman could conceive. In fact, Nettles Stirrups solve numerous problems such as shin pressure, foot fatigue, and achy knees. Their unique structure sets the rider's foot and aids with balance in the saddle. Comfortable, yet beautiful, functional and cowboy-tough- their reputation for excellence is untouchable.

Nettles Stirrups

Ronnie Nettles still trains horses on his Texas ranch. These days, however, only a stone's throw away from that arena is the manufacturing home of the famous Nettles Stirrups. Order yours today or drop by and try out a pair in that arena. You'll be glad you did!

Snodgress Equipment

A Short Word from AQHA Judge Randy Snodgress

To wrap up this issue on all aspects of horse ownership, I talked to AQHA Judge Randy Snodgress of Snodgress Equipment about showing horses from a judge's perspective. Here's what he had to say:

Randy Snodgress"As a judge, one of my biggest pet peeves is whining exhibitors.  I'm qualified to talk about this because, as an exhibitor, I was one of the biggest whiners!

If every exhibitor truly wanted to better themselves, they would find a way to view the show from the judge's perspective.  Everything looks completely different from the inside of the arena or from the judge's stand. Most of the time, exhibitors watch their own horse or maybe another, but not the whole class.  Ninety percent of the time, the judge simply wants to find the best horses in the class.  As exhibitors, we always assume the best horse is ours.

The best thing I ever did for myself when I was showing was buy a video camera and video the entire class- not just my own horse.  This way, I could have a fair comparison. 99% of the time, I agreed with the judge after I watched the video.  Just sayin'... until later."
