Howdy!

The sun has finally come out here in Houston! I hope you had an opportunity to  venture out to the rodeos on the circuit this month, despite the arctic blast. If you didn't, I have a few updates for you on the first half of the rodeo season. I also found some great stuff for you and got some stories from our Western Vault members. Check it out!

While the 2011 rodeo season started last October, the first of the year is when all of the big rodeos get going. Doing well at Denver, coming to Fort Worth, and on to San Antonio can certainly jump start anyone's season.

FORT WORTH- After winning two world championships in the saddle bronc riding, it might be assumed that Cody Wright had won rodeo after rodeo across the country. However, there are a few buckles he wants to add to his collection. Wright did that in fine fashion at the 115th annual Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo on Feb. 5 when he won both the final round and the over-all saddle bronc title. His final ride on J Bar J Rodeo's Tipped Off was the high-marked ride of the rodeo at 91 points. "It feels awesome," Wright said. "This is one of those rodeos that people talk about winning, and one that you sure want to add to your list. To finally get this buckle is huge."

FWSSRThe big money winner at this year's Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo was Kay Blandford from Sutherland Springs, Texas. The barrel racer won the championship with a total time of 33.99 seconds. It netted her a whopping $17,797.

Over 1,200 contestants competed at the 2011 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo for a piece of $575,000 in prize money.

San AntonioSAN ANTONIO- The San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo did not let Mother Nature put a damper on all the fun to be had at the Freeman Coliseum grounds and inside the AT&T Center this season. With over 62 years under their belt and over 5,000 volunteers convening to assemble the 6-time PRCA Large Indoor Rodeo of the Year, one "snow day" served only to create cabin fever for San Antonio folks who were eager to enjoy the sunshine and beautiful winter Texas weather. San Antonio Livestock and Horse Show exhibitor numbers grew from last year's totals, and more vendors than ever poured into the numerous marketplace shopping locations. The weekend of February 12th and 13th proved to be the best yet, with both days bringing record crowds to the grounds!

Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo

HLSRNext on the circuit, is "the world's largest indoor rodeo." Things have already geared up for the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Last weekend, excitement filled Reliant Center as more than 3,000 wine enthusiasts delighted their taste buds at the 2011 Rodeo Uncorked! Roundup and Best Bites Competition. Buckles, chaps and saddles were awarded to the 2011 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo International Wine Competition champions, and the event included the tasting of the winning wines, as well as a sampling and competition of food from area restaurants and catering institutions. The competition boasted 1,788 wines from 592 wineries in Texas, across the United States and around the world. Sixteen countries participated in the competition, and 1,147 medals were awarded by 15 panels of judges, consisting of local, national, and international wine experts. Check out the complete list of all the winners here!

This weekend is the World's Championship BBQ Contest, the ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run, and the Downtown Rodeo Parade, and this is just the beginning! The rodeo runs March 1st through the 20th. Check out the full calendar of events and entertainer lineup before you go. You don't want to miss a thing! Be sure to see our Western Vault members while you're there!

The Hat Store

Last week, I spent an afternoon with Western Vault member Gary Cohen of The Hat Store. His store is packed from wall to wall with history and traditions. I wish I could have stayed longer to hear more stories of his family's business.

It goes back nearly a century to when downtown Houston had dirt roads and wooden sidewalks. Visitors could tie their horses to the hitching post outside before going in to find a perfect new hat at the original American Hat Company. It was Gary's grandfather's store then, but it wasn't just a business. It was a studio where a talented artist put great care and detail into making and shaping the hats that defined the Texas business man and cowboy. Gary's grandfather, dad, and uncle made hats for Gene Autry, Lyndon Johnson, Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Humphrey Bogart, and a number of other celebrities. Every part of the process was done by hand, and it still is now. Gary still steams, irons, cleans, shapes, and makes his hats using special trade tools, but no machines. What an art!

Gary & his wife, Liz, founded their new store, The Hat Store, in 1981. They have been running the business in their location on Richmond Ave. for the past thirty years. Pictures of visitors line the wall  including Brooks & Dunn, ZZ Top, Lyle Lovett, Clint Black, Patrick Swayze, and Alabama. In fact, the manager of ZZ Top ordered 30 straw hats from Gary as they were making their start on the road. Gary handshaped them with the tall crown and sharply dipped, 3" brim that became a defining part of the ZZ Top concert act. Gary has also made hats worn by President George H. Bush & Slim Pickens.

Gary pointed out one hat he has hanging on the wall behind the counter. It is a gray felt hat that is held together by toothpicks and a few stitches around the crown. Gary told me the story of an old friend that bought it from him years back as a brand new hat. When he finally retired it, he sent it back to Gary in an envelope as flat as a pancake. Attached was a note that Gary keeps paperclipped to the brim. It hangs on the wall as a representation of what true friendship really is.

Gary and his team at The Hat Store take pride in their business, and they very well should. It is a place you will always feel welcome and at home. Charlotte will meet you at the door, Gary will shape your hat to perfection, and you will leave with it wrapped in a new hat box complete with a hand-tied ribbon. He will also reshape, clean, and fix your old hats. No matter what, he tells every customer that leaves his shop, "Thanks a million." I only hope that I treat my business and customers with as much friendliness, sincerity, and gratitude as Gary treats his at The Hat Store.

JK Brand Custom Designs

JK Brand Custom DesignsOne of our brand new members- you can find stunning leather shawls, wraps, and belts from JK Brand Custom Designs.

Jennifer King, of JK Brand, began with a single elk-hide pillow. At the urging of friends, she visited gift shops in the North & West, making sure that no one else was making the same style western accessories she had in mind for JK Brand.

Beyond the pillows, "The ladies' Western Shawl has been a revelation," she says of one of her latest creations. "We girls want to look elegant while feeling western. It goes with jeans or velvet skirts or minis. And it may be embellished any way you want it, truly making it your own."

JK Brand Custom DesignsMore than accessories, JK BRAND Custom Designs are expressions of western style. The subtle combination of natural hides with handcrafted accents including hand-cut fringe, sterling silver conchos, glass trade beads, and furs will transcend a single era or life-style. Each item is a distinctive, individual, creative translation from supple elk hides to pillows, throws, table runners, window treatments, furniture and apparel. No individual piece ever turns out quite like another. Simply put, they are prized treasures for interior design reflecting comfortable living more than a rustic-ranch style.

ROCKETBUSTER TRUNK SHOW AT PINTO RANCH!

Finally, a beautiful weekend to get out and about! Last week, I made it out to the Pinto Ranch Houston location for a Rocketbuster trunk show. I found Rocketbuster owner & designer, Nevena Christi, sitting on the floor in her own pair of tall-top, black, floral boots measuring customers for a perfect fit. She was taking orders for custom boots of all colors and designs.

Nevena is a "Texas transplant" who left her life as a New York fashion designer to be with her true love in 1997. The rest is history. She, her husband, and their small team manufacture custom boots out of their historic warehouse in downtown El Paso.

Rocketbuster boots are absolutely amazing- each one handcrafted with intricate details to match your personality and style. You can call Nevena at 915-541-1300 to schedule your custom order, or you can find them at both Pinto Ranch locations.
