"If policyholders don't like what we're doing, they can go somewhere else"
Those are the words of Liberty Mutual's CEO David Long in a
general response to reports about the company's spending
on everything from a fleet of private jets to a personal
exercise room for Long, in his office.
For a number of weeks, the Boston Globe's Brian McGrory
has been reporting in his column the extravagant spending
of Liberty Mutual, for example, $200 million in salary for
former CEO Ted Kelly over his last four years on the job, a
$4.5 million renovation of the CEO's office for Long, $200,000 a year for members of the Liberty Mutual Board, the five private jets owned by Liberty Mutual to fly its executives to who knows where, and much more.
In his most recent column McGrory questioned Long on the financial stability of Liberty ($18 billion in capital) and asked about dividends. His response, "The whole issue of dividends is tricky." Liberty doesn't pay dividends. Long then said, "Policyholders have
the ultimate say. If they don't like what we're doing, they can
go somewhere else."
I am not one to company bash, but the Globe articles do call into question the leadership at Liberty Mutual and the direction that they are going in. I'll leave it at that.
In recent months we have worked with a number of clients that were plain fed up with Liberty. If you have any policies with Liberty or know someone who does, we are here to help.

Barbecues Gone Wrong
July 4th is upon us and with that comes the many backyard cookouts. Maybe I am a bit of a paranoid insurance agent, but I would be remiss if I didn't share some hints on grilling safe.

Rewind the clock to April 10th of this year. A grill that was positioned too close to a home in Uxbridge sparked a four alarm blaze. Luckily everyone escaped injury, but the home was a total loss.
Before you fire up the grill this 4th of July, click on the link below for tips to keep your family safe.
