Keeping Young Drivers Safe
According to the Centers for Disease Control, car accidents account for approximately 350,000 teen injuries each year. In addition, one in three deaths in the teen age group are due to motor vehicle accidents.
Statistically the youthful drivers have a much higher probability of an accident. There are some ways to hedge against that and help keep your kids safe.
Driver training is paramount. There are some tools that parents can use to supplement the standard driver training course. Here are a few suggestions:
A recently released guide for parents offers some practical tips on safe driving for teens. The Parents Supervised Driving Guide is a available for free from the MA DOT. Click here for more details.
Crash prevention courses offer additional skill sets for both youthful and experienced drivers alike. In Control offers the nation's first state certified crash prevention training to drivers of all ages. Click here for more details and course offerings.
Make sure they know about the dangers involved with texting while driving. There is a powerful YouTube video that was produced by AT&T. Everyone should watch it. Click here for the texting video.
These resources aren't just for teens. Parents and teens can benefit from all of these. We recommend an ongoing dialogue with your teen drivers. You'll be glad you did. |
