During the Charity Golf Classic reception, Michael Finer, who is a Lt. Colonel in the Army National Guard, and the past Battalion Commander of the 1st Battalion, 181st Infantry Regiments and Guard Support board member, spoke about his personal experience and how Guard Support assisted him and his family during his deployment. "The only way I was able to speak with my family for a year was through SKYPE. Guard Support gave us the resources to talk often, which helped me to stay positive and assured my family I was doing okay," he said. "Danversbank's donation today is going to help so many of the 3,000 Mass. Guard members being deployed to Afghanistan over the next several months in the same way."

Golf participants signed 'thank you for serving' cards for nearly 130 Mass. Guard soldiers assigned to Charlie Co. of the 181 Infantry, which are currently deployed to Afghanistan. Guard Support will send the cards to the unit members so that they will arrive before the Thanksgiving holiday, a difficult time for service members serving overseas.

Danversbank President & CEO Kevin Bottomley thanked Michael for his dedicated service and explained his reason for naming Guard Support as this year's beneficiary. "After learning about Guard Support in a news article earlier this year, we thought 'what better way to support and honor our National Guard Members and their families?'" Mr. Bottomley said. "Most of us here today have not been affected by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to the extent the families of our National Guard members have. This donation is a way to give back to the men and women who sacrifice their own safety everyday and whose families wait patiently for their return home."

First-Ever Western Massachusetts Fundraiser for Guard Support
Guard Support volunteer and business owner, Roberta Page is coordinating the first-ever Guard Support fundraiser in Western, Massachusetts. A Beach Boys Tribute featuring The Drifters will be held at the Hu Ke Lau in Chicopee, Mass. on Sunday, November 14th at 5:30pm. This venue location was selected due to its proximity to Barnes Air National Guard Base
104th Fighter Wing
The 104th Fighter Wing of the Mass. Air National Guard located in Westfield, Massachusetts, is an operational flying unit assigned to the Air Combat Command, and proudly claims the honor of being one of the oldest flying units within the Commonwealth of Mass.

The 104th Fighter Wing officially began its new mission on February 15, 2010 to provide air security to the Northeast.
The unit, with its 18 F-!5 Eagle tactical fighter jets, has taken over the air sovereignty mission which has been performed by the Vermont Air National Guard, stationed in Burlington, Vt., for the past two years.

On Friday, October 29, 2010 Two F-15 fighter jets out of the Barnes Mass. Air National Guard Base in Westfield escorted an Emirates Airlines cargo jet from Canadian airspace into JFK Airport in New York as the U.S. responded to a terror threat launched from Yemen.
in Westfield, home of the 104th Fighter Wing and Westover Air Force Reserve Base in Chicopee.

Event proceeds donated to Guard Support will benefit current and soon-to-be-deployed enlisted Massachusetts Army National Guard and Air National Guard members.

Guard Support will use the proceeds to provide transportation-on-leave to Western Mass. Guard soldiers and airmen and women so that they do not have to personally pay for travel expenses in order to come home from out-of-state training to visit their families and friends before deploying oversees.

"The general public does not understand that transportation-on-leave expenses are personal expenses that the service men and women must pay out of their own pockets if they want to return to their homes and see their families before they leave for deployment with their units," explained Roberta Page, a West Springfield resident, who is coordinating the event. "When each troop finishes his or her training, (s)he, usually, has [two to] four days leave before leaving the states. If an airline ticket is $400 to return from training to Massachusetts, it can create a hardship on the family. It may take away from payments for winter heating oil, utilities, food or Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. I just want to make sure that no one has to forego leave because the expenditure is too costly," Ms. Page continued.

Over 400 Mass. National Guard and Mass. Air National Guard troops will be deployed from  Western Massachusetts, which has over 40 Mass. National Guard and Air National Guard units. Members of these units live, not only in Massachusetts, but in other states.
