Greetings!
We would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the Social Justice Learning Institute, (SJLI) a nonprofit organization focused on improving educational institutions in Los Angeles. You are receiving this email because one of your colleagues works directly with this nonprofit group.
The Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI) is dedicated to advancing social justice by empowering communities through education, training and programs that help to address their needs. We currently do this through our academic, food and environmental justice initiatives where we offer trainings, workshops, programs and resources to meet the community's needs. We provide on-campus literacy programs and college preparatory education. We also operate community gardens and orchards that provide a direct link to healthy food to our community members.
Please join us at our Earth Day event on April 23rd and become a sponsor! See details below.
Sincerely,
D'Artagnan Scorza, Executive Director

About Us
The Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI) grew out of the work of its pilot academy, the Black Male Youth Academy (BMYA) at Morningside High School. The BMYA began in 2006, and the SJLI centered on this work, began in 2007. The SJLI was created to expand the success of the BMYA and reach multiple populations. Since 2006, we have inspired the creation of three additional academies at Morningside High School, based on the model of the BMYA including the Phoenix Rising Women's Academy (PRWA), My Sister's Keeper, and Robinson's Male Youth Leadership Academy. There were 8 African American male seniors in the 2009 BMYA graduating cohort. Of this 8 group, five were accepted to a four-year University, two attended a community college and 1 attended a trade school.
Its Simple!
Our focus is on advancing social justice in order to empower and uplift communities so that we can achieve equity. We combine an innovative community based approach with research methods to develop and manage programs that improve community conditions. We hope to serve as a replicable model for organizations that wish to address issues affecting underserved communities. We are a dynamic organization and we rely on you to keep it that way.
If you wish to make a contribution to our organization, you can do so by visiting www.sjli-cp.org. SJLI is a project of Community Partners, a 501(c)(3) organization and all contributions made to SJLI are tax-deductible.
Our Goals
Our goals are simple. We work to:
- build capacity for individuals and communities to advocate for their needs;
- train and build leaders;
- educate and empower youth and community members to identify and rectify injustice; and to
- deliver effective programs, resources and support that help advance our mission.
To meet these goals, we work with youth, residents, local schools, districts and city officials to increase educational opportunities through innovative programs and sustainable practices. We also develop and manage programs that advance academic, food and environmental justice.
