"Above all, be true to yourself, and if you cannot put your heart in it, take yourself out of it."

~Hardy D. Jackson

A few weeks ago, I had the honor to be invited to attend the Rice University Business Plan Competition where representatives of exceptional teams competed for over one million dollars in venture funding. The three-day competition started with each representative giving a 30-second elevator speech.

In the end, those who succeeded were the ones who clearly verbalized and substantiated the Why behind their efforts. They were inspiring in their passionate sense of purpose and belief in their plan. They knew what mattered and others bought into it.

From that, this month's newsletter will address how what matters starts with the Why.

Sincerely,

What is Your Why?

Think of how you spent your day today. What did you do for the majority of it?  What about last week? Month?

Now answer one simple question: Does any of it matter (to you or others)?

Knowing what Matters Starts with The Why

The Why, is what inspires people. It's your purpose, your belief, your reason for being. Whether you want to end world suffering or just trim your waistline by getting yourself to stick to one cookie instead of five, without a why you'll go nowhere.

People Don't Buy What You Do, They Buy Why You Do It

Why else would people pay a hefty premium for a sweatshirt manufactured by a company that believes in saving the environment and seeking adventure? Or for a smart phone from a company that believes in being different and making life fun?

Once you connect with your Why, you give others a belief they can adopt. The What and the How then become wonderful ways to justify the Why.

My Personal Why is Simple

I have a fundamental belief that if I can help those around me do the work they love and live their passion and purpose in life, then the world will be a fundamentally different place, with an end to the majority of bad moods, misconduct and frustration.  That is what truly matters to me.

Embody your Personal Why

We are not meant to do things the way they've always been done. We are meant to find and follow our own paths. This leads to greatness.

We deserve to spend our time on things that actually matter to us. The only unsuccessful day is one spent unhappy. I assure you that, if we accomplish this, those things will matter a hell of a lot more to the world than whatever we were working on before.

The Why is the Reason Meaningful Things Get Done

Without the Why, you will not be inspired. Without being inspired, you will not inspire others. You are the first person you must get on board. Nothing important ever gets done without a powerful enough reason. Running a marathon or leading extraordinary change - it all starts with Why.

Understand your Why

What is your belief of how the world should be? What is your reason for being? It doesn't have to be some grand earth-shattering belief. It just has to matter to you. If you care enough, others will join in.

Most of us who aren't already living the Why have an idea of what it is (or at least what it's not). You simply may have been suppressing it in an effort to be more 'realistic' (which, by the way, is a euphemism for accepting the status quo).

Listen to yourself. Really. That's the stuff that matters. Not what someone else or job role or area of study says you should be. What do they know about you anyway? Not much. Few people do. That's why you owe it to yourself to start searching.

Live with passion

Does what you're doing now really matter (to you or others)? What is the Why that drives you? If you still don't have the answer, drop what you are doing and do something you give a hoot about!

And live with passion.
