"Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish." - John Quincy Adams

Dear Readers:

Recently I had a conversation with a bright and worldly neo-graduate who shared her ambitions and dreams about graduate school. She would not settle for anything less than what she considered the best educational institution in the world. However, upon visiting the university and speaking with a number of educators and students, she became somewhat discouraged about her ability to earn admittance to her school of choice.

Coincidentally, a few days earlier, I had read to my daughter the timeless children's fable, The Tortoise and the Hare - a story that teaches us the virtue of setting and maintaining a pace to achieve our goals. In the fable, Turtle becomes tired of listening to Rabbit brag about how quick he is, and Turtle challenges him to a race. From the starting line, Rabbit sprints away, leaving Turtle behind. Rabbit taunts turtle for being so slow, but soon Rabbit becomes tired. Looking back and seeing that Turtle is very far behind him, Rabbit believes that he has the luxury of taking a nap. Rabbit is later awakened by the cheers of the other woodland creatures as Turtle crosses the finish line.

It's a simple and classic tale, with the moral being, "Slow and steady wins the race."

With Aesop as my inspiration, I had a productive discussion with the neo-graduate about perseverance, which is the topic of this month's newsletter.

As always, please feel free to forward this e-mail to friends, family, and acquaintances.

Sincerely,

The Tortoise and the Hare - A Lesson in Perseverance

Perseverance is continuing to do something in spite of obstacles or difficulties. To persevere, we need to have faith that we actually can succeed. If we believe we will succeed, we will not give up. When faced with failures, we adjust our tactics and continue forward. In so doing, we greatly improve our chances of success. This is the essence of self-fulfilling prophecy.

Why is perseverance so powerful? Throughout history, we find great stories of perseverance. Perseverance has changed lives, nations, and sometimes even the world. Many wonder how these people can avoid the temptation to give up.

Often, it was because they believed in something far greater than themselves. They had an end goal constantly in mind: an unwavering dedication to achieving their dream.

So, where does its power lie?

First, perseverance is powerful because it instills hope. Whenever a tennis player double-faults on a serve, it is perseverance that keeps the player returning to make yet another one - this time in the hope of an ace. Hope and perseverance exist symbiotically, each recharging the other. Regardless of the failures and disappointments of the past, each new moment is full of hope. Combined with perseverance, it is the key to turning our dreams into reality.

Next, perseverance is powerful because it helps you stay focused. When you stick to something, constantly trying, constantly getting up each time you fall, you are bound to get it. You will receive that which you desire. When you reach that point where no person can tell you that it will not happen, then you know for certain that it will happen. It is the undeniable promise that you will get what you want.

Third, perseverance gives you confidence. If you have the will to win - the want for nothing else but that which you desire - then nothing can stand in your way. You will always be ready for anything, courageous and capable.

If you didn't understand the amazing power of perseverance before, hopefully you do now. With hope, focus, a bulldozer for obstacles, and the promise of achievement on its side, I think that perseverance is actually one of the most exciting qualities any person can have.

Now, your Homework!

Pick a big dream: a once in a lifetime dream, a gift to mankind dream, a purpose-filling dream. Then run with it and persevere, develop your talents! The joy is in the process with its obstacles and surprises. Great missions are never achieved; they are lived. They continue to beckon us forward. They need constant tending, and in that tending are many small achievements. Beyond success is fulfillment more rewarding than any physical destination.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What is my personal mission?
  • What am I firmly committed to accomplishing during my lifetime?
  • What has stopped me from completing my goals in the past?
  • What do I need to believe to consistently work toward my goals and develop the habit of perseverance?
  • What joys do I experience each day while living the mission I intend to fulfill?
  • What will I realize when I have completed my ultimate mission?

The Tortoise and the Hare is a timeless classic that reinforces a lesson that we learn at a young age, but is often forgotten by adults as the demands of life in a modern world bear down upon us. The fable teaches us that, while sprints are good for short distances, a methodical pace is what will efficiently take us long distances.

Whether we vocalize them or not, we all have goals. We all have dreams. Attaining them depends upon the system of support we create that will ensure success. State your dreams without fear and pursue them the same.

Be it big or small, make it a point to take one step forward every day.
