I believe that we do know it when we are compromising our vision of happiness and fulfillment or settling for less than what our passions and desires are attached to.

Greetings and welcome to the May edition of "When the Status Quo is Not an Option".  As I quote a respected former educator, I offer you below what I hope will be some thought-provoking reading.

Feel free to forward this e-mail to friends, family, and acquaintances.

Pivotal Changes ~ Life and Business Coaching

In reply to my April Newsletter I received a variety of comments and feedback. Although each was interesting and constructive, three caught my attention:

  • "Coaching may indeed be the ideal solution to one's problems in a theoretical world, whereby every effort yields positive outcome and recognition.  In reality the dynamics are much more complicated.  One may be coached to achieve results yet fall short of those results being recognized and/or appreciated and/or ever being implemented by others."
  • Along the same lines: "There are two people in my life who do not, recognize, let alone appreciate my efforts:  my boss and my spouse."
  • And finally: "I live in a 'crappy' country where the government does not even pay its bills. Yet I want to become a millionaire and have one private jet for business and one for pleasure.  In a year.  How can coaching help me?"

I address those comments in my commentary below.  I also offer you an exercise (see HOMEWORK EXERCISE further down) as an aid to those in similar situations.

And, if the exercise gets you a million dollars and a jet, I'll gladly accept my commission. Checks are fine.

My take on life coaching in general:

I believe that we do know it when we are compromising our vision of happiness and fulfillment or settling for less than what our passions and desires are attached to. An individual is ready for the life-changing experience of coaching when that person realizes that his or her status quo will never open doors to the life of passion and commitment that leads to happiness and fulfillment.  Coaching can open those doors and guide you in the pursuit of your goals.

You, the client, are responsible for deciding what you really want and for choosing your responses and outcomes as you make progress. Having the support of a spouse, family, friends, supervisors, community or even the government is a bonus. But it is just that: a bonus. If you don't have it, does that justify compromising your vision?

Here's an exercise to help you get a better grasp on where you are and how to get where you want to be:

HOMEWORK EXERCISE

Think of a project or other outcome in your current life, role, or organization that you want to accomplish:

  • Articulate a vision and outcome
  • What is it that you really want?
  • If you had it how would you know?
  • Identify your current situation
  • Assess what supports or is helpful in creating the vision or outcome
  • Assess what inhibits the creation of that vision or outcome
  • Focus on current reality and your vision and outcome
  • Do not compromise the vision (do not settle for less than you really want)
  • Do not avoid the truth about current reality (deny, minimize, explain)
  • List baby steps
  • Generate possible next steps
  • Determine and commit to no more than 3 baby steps in the next 90 days
  • Go for it!

As you implement your changes, keep these points in mind:

  • Take stock of your progress.
  • Remember it is not about your boss or your spouse (or your kids or friends or community for that matter), it really is about YOU.
  • Send me a debriefing note, and I will provide you with complimentary feedback.

be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
you're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!"
